Seemingly there's going to be an announcement at noon of the "political earthquake" type.

Kevin Doyle on X: "Told this closely guarded secret will be significant. People being contacted since 6am to coordinate - but for now it’s all being kept within government buildings. Political ‘earthquake': major announcement expected from Government at noon t.co/73Cyp7c9ms" / X (twitter.com)

Hold on to your hats, lads and ladesses!

@NotestoSelf The $64m question. If you ask a FF FG member it's not long before they're talking about Collins and Devalera. Like they just popped out for a bottle of milk and a newspaper.

Back in the 30s 40s FF was a tiny bit more left wing . Apparently. But then I suppose everyone was back then?

Well puffs on pipe...

NotestoSelf · 22/03/2024 14:42

One of the (many) things I missed while living out of Ireland was apparently 'Michael Collins; the Musical'...

getoutahere · 22/03/2024 14:55

Josepha Madigan has announced she won't be running in the next General Election. Including Leo, I think that makes 12 Fine Gael TDs who are bowing out.

StephanieSuperpowers · 22/03/2024 15:03

It's going to be an interesting election. If you ever had any dreams of being a TD, get yourself off to the local FG org and sign up today...

There must be something going on for all these people to be jumping ship??

3timeslucky · 22/03/2024 15:18

I could imagine they might be throwing in the towel as they've been around a while now and I'm assuming that political life in a coalition is just not as much "fun" and must feel less effective and also has less ministerial positions available. It is still a lot though.

I could also imagine that if you thought the LV direction for FG was arseways that you'd be looking at the enthusiasm for SH and thinking "more of the same".

I agree, it just seems weird. Usually they cling on for dear life.

Are many of them even pension age? I assume they have lined up cushy private sector jobs.

StephanieSuperpowers · 22/03/2024 15:20

The private polling must be outrageous.

It is odd, isn't it? And I'm not someone who falls for conspiracy theories. Mary Lou must be rubbing her hands in glee.

StephanieSuperpowers · 22/03/2024 15:24

Mary Lou needn't go around boasting that I'll be voting SF, because I won't. Not just their shocking past, but also their Gannon Agenda present. That's how they want to modernise? They can have it.

OP posts:
Abhannmor · 22/03/2024 16:13

Tell me about their shocking past. My grandad was an IRA man. He was Fine Gael.

What's the Gannon agenda though? Please let it not be some WEF crap from YouTube

StephanieSuperpowers · 22/03/2024 16:20

By Gannon, I meant O'Gorman.

I think it's fair to say that aspects of the border campaign were hideous. I make no apologies for saying that I don't think SF can be rehabilitated as an electable organisation while they still don't reveal where the Disappeared are, for example.

I wonder has it anything to do with her mileage claims for months she didn't have any engagements. The Ditch have posted about this on X.

Fine. But there are disappeared people all around me. And the people who disappeared them are A.The British Army and police. B. People who subsequently called themselves Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil. King Charles is the Commander in Chief of the bloody Parachute Regiment for Christ's sake. But we have to move on....however reluctantly.

There is...its €€€ related. If I was them and had their pension pot waiting for me I'd resign too. Unlike us plebs they don't have to wait until they are 80 odd to get their pension. This is probably out of date but gives and idea https://www.irishexaminer.com/lifestyle/arid-30883511.html

Special Report: Fine Gael trio sitting on shared pension pot of €5m

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Tánaiste Simon Coveney, and newly appointed Communications Minister Richard Bruton are entitled to a generous set of retirement benefits whenever they choose to bow out of political life, writes Daniel McConnell

I certainly won't be voting SF either. It's frustrating because there seems to be nobody to vote for come the GE. I usually go independents, but they never get very far.

There's the Michael Collins Trail as well around Crookstown , Cork. Some people would skin their grandmother for a 😔

DublinFemale · 22/03/2024 23:40

So it's a one horse race for the leader. SH is getting a complete poison chalice.

He doesn't have enough time to enthuse the public by June.

I feel he is a scapegoat, stick him until next year's election. They will be in trouble between non runners and people lack of confidence.

He will be removed and the real wanted leader will all stick names in hat to be leader after election.

This is merely a stop gap, to get over the hump

Kinda have to wonder what he's at there? He's no thick like. Strange.

Did anyone else see what Eoin O'Broin said yesterday? God help us if SF get into power, he seems to be discarding all evidence of what we have historically seen to be true regarding purely social housing, he seems to be approaching it all from a very naive perspective. I'm also surprised that SF want to retain 'right to buy'

https://www.irishtimes.com/ireland/housing-planning/2024/03/21/mixing-social-and-private-housing-segregates-rather-than-integrates-communities-says-o-broin/

https://archive.ph/AvS2u

I think he is quite wrong about that. My estate is mixed. About 50 / 50. No riots or civil commotions. About 20 years old now. Right to buy is OK if the council can use the money to build new property in its entirety. Otherwise whats the point? It just fuels endless boom /bust cycles.

I could get behind the trail, it was more the idea of Collins warbling 'Dev, you have betrayed meeeee! We used to be friennnnnnds!' that blew my mind.

DublinFemale · 24/03/2024 07:24

I know from experience the issue with a mixed building is not the mixing the problem is the hands off approach of councils towards illegal and or antisocial behaviour towards other people living there. Councils are obliged to house them regardless of their behaviour

There needs to be consequences to stamp it out at the very beginning. It only takes one house.

I also appreciate it could also be an owner but that is causing problems.

We as a society need much stronger antisocial laws and consequences from the start.

LadyEloise1 · 24/03/2024 08:25

"....We as a society need much stronger antisocial laws and consequences from the start."

Absolutely @DublinFemale but in a week when a GAA "star" gets a suspended sentence for an appalling unprovoked attack on a young man and a disgusting flasher gets a suspended sentenced for displaying himself to 4 young girls and causing them extreme distress also gets a suspended sentence I won't hold my breath that those tough laws will happen.
