Seemingly there's going to be an announcement at noon of the "political earthquake" type.

Kevin Doyle on X: "Told this closely guarded secret will be significant. People being contacted since 6am to coordinate - but for now it’s all being kept within government buildings. Political ‘earthquake': major announcement expected from Government at noon t.co/73Cyp7c9ms" / X (twitter.com)

Hold on to your hats, lads and ladesses!

Interesting timing that he announced it the same day as the report pushing ahead euthanasia (without needing a referendum) was submitted
Yes yes some will say I'm a conspiracy theorist but time and date of announcements are rarely accidental.

The Mother & baby home redress scheme opened today too, that's riddled with issues and it's very convenient that nobody is talking about it.

Apparently Jennifer Carroll has indicated interest but she’s very unpopular in FG

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 20/03/2024 20:54

I've only just seen the speech. He seemed genuinely sad and upset. I wonder what was the straw that broke the camels back. I feel sorry for him now!

This tweet pissed many off, voted to remove women & mothers from the constitution then headed straight off on her taxpayer funded jollies to Mexico 🙄

She's in my constituency - I emailed her a few times about my concerns with Self ID law, gender ideology in schools etc. and she ignored me. I'm not a fan tbh.

VaddaABeetch · 20/03/2024 21:26

Jennifer Carroll is a Prosecco & you go girl / girl boss type of women’s rights defender.

She might change her tune now.. They all might🤞

So we could be entering the Simon Harris era - no change for women and children there.

The only good thing about Harris getting the job is that it ensures I won't have any doubts in the Local, European or General elections.
FG seems to be determined to plough on with their current trajectory.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 21/03/2024 11:20

I can't imagine Harris as Taoiseach but it looks like he's the frontrunner. Whatever about Coveney aging, I've never seen anything like the way Simon Harris has aged 😮 He's not even 40 and he's starting to resemble Mr Burns from The Simpsons!

As for the self ID disaster I have zero hope. I've written to a few TDs and Senators myself but had no response. Simon Harris is married to a nurse you'd think with her medical training she'd be able to knock some sense into him but maybe she's captured too.

I do feel that there's something else behind Leo jumping ship I wonder will we find out soon.

LolaJ87 · 21/03/2024 11:33

Whatever you think of his politics, I do always feel for Simon Harris when people comment on his looks. He has Crohn's disease, it's so hard on the body and it is likely why he looks unwell/older than his years.

VoteNONO · 21/03/2024 11:57

I feel Leo showed real immaturity & lack of leadership in Dublin Castle the evening of the referendum results when he left before the final count was announced.
He's the leader of our nation, win or lose he should have been able to shake the oppositions hand & put on a brave face in front of the electorate. He should have shown us he respected our wishes but was long gone when the count was finalised.
As part of the electorate I feel it was very disrespectful & immature behaviour on Varadkar's part as Taoiseach

honeyrider · 21/03/2024 13:18

Pascal has ruled himself out of the leadership race, looks like Simon Harris will get it.

VoteNONO · 21/03/2024 13:59

Heather Humphreys out also.

VaddaABeetch · 21/03/2024 14:20

Harris desperate to get hate speech through. Also believes TWAW

VoteNONO · 21/03/2024 14:38

That will be disastrous. He's only 11 months left but he could cause absolute havoc during that time 😭

Abhannmor · 21/03/2024 15:16

I was surprised how strongly Leo supported Palestine and explained so well why most Irish people do so. The more so considering his dad is a Hindu. Obviously he is not a fan of Indian president Modi who is best mates with Netanyahu. Compare and contrast with another Hindu - Rishi Sunak .

There again , you can be a bit braver when you know you're quitting the job? Fwiw , my English in laws and friends rate Coveney. They were impressed with the way he verbally destroyed Tory politicians and their client media during Brexit. I'd probably look brilliant next to Liz Truss mind you.

I was living in England during the whole, long-drawn out Brexit fiasco, and obsessively consuming media from Ireland and the UK, and, the dopiest Dáil discussions soon started sounding like Plato's Symposium compared to the nonsense in Westminster.

Villagetoraiseachild · 21/03/2024 17:17

Yes, over here in Sasana, Simon Coveney made a big impression, showing how to do politics in a decent way. He really stood out.

Abhannmor · 21/03/2024 17:28

Also @Villagetoraiseachild I don't think Coveney is a committed Thatcherite like Varadkar , he's more old school centrist ?

@NotestoSelf 😂 😂 😂 Plato's Symposium! Agree...

Though my then 7 year old, just after we moved back to Ireland, in time for the 2020 general election, was observing the election posters and asked me, reasonably enough, (used to Tory Vs Labour) what the difference between FF and FG was, and remained unsatisfied with any of my attempts to answer him. Grin

Abhannmor · 21/03/2024 21:49

@NotestoSelf The $64m question. If you ask a FF FG member it's not long before they're talking about Collins and Devalera. Like they just popped out for a bottle of milk and a newspaper.

Back in the 30s 40s FF was a tiny bit more left wing . Apparently. But then I suppose everyone was back then?
