Seemingly there's going to be an announcement at noon of the "political earthquake" type.

Kevin Doyle on X: "Told this closely guarded secret will be significant. People being contacted since 6am to coordinate - but for now it’s all being kept within government buildings. Political ‘earthquake': major announcement expected from Government at noon t.co/73Cyp7c9ms" / X (twitter.com)

Hold on to your hats, lads and ladesses!

Michael Fabricant's hair has been real, all this time!

I'm not sure he would get many transfers. It could well be that part of the issue here is the conservative wing of the party letting the lads know that the O'Gorman Agenda is electoral poison.

I think the O'Gorman Agenda is part of the Programme for Government though, so I don't think they can distance themselves too much from his agenda without calling a GE. A GE will see a Green Party wipeout but also very likely banish FG to the Opposition side of the room. Even if they, FG, form another government, it will most likely be with a party with a similar agenda.
Woke FG is going nowhere soon.

DeanElderberry · 20/03/2024 15:42

Do you mind if I change the punctuation on that, anticipating elections.

Woke FG is going nowhere.

Soon.

DublinFemale · 20/03/2024 15:43

Please god not SH or PD.

I can't listen to those squeaky voices every leader's questions.

No one Ireland deserves that infliction

DublinFemale · 20/03/2024 15:56

I think the referendum was an issue, not the fact they lost but how badly they lost.

It one of the worst (if not the worst) referendum defeat.

I think the skill of the loss rather than the actual loss was a tipping point.

I think it always coming that loss was final straw

Owannanassiam · 20/03/2024 16:06

Interesting timing that he announced it the same day as the report pushing ahead euthanasia (without needing a referendum) was submitted
Yes yes some will say I'm a conspiracy theorist but time and date of announcements are rarely accidental.

Gowlett · 20/03/2024 15:07

Yes, they’ll get a woman in.
And blame her for everything!

Just look at Theresa May…

More than likely Heather Humphreys so... Helen McEntee definitely won't be allowed be the scapegoat..

Coveney - rural? Absolutely not, he is a city boy, lives in suburbs. The opposite of rural. I would however see him being from Cork an issue, with Martin there. It's not even the fact that they are from County Cork but both from the same constituency. As is Michael McGrath. It would also cause them to be directly against each other for an election. They already are of course but not in the capacity of two party leaders.

I wonder what prompted this?

Given that Simon C aged about 20 years while he was Minister for Foreign Affairs, I'd worry about being Taoiseach making him an octogenarian overnight. (I take his ageing personally because we are exactly the same age...)

He's rural, though, but in a gentleman farmer/yacht-owning/vicinity of Crosshaven/RCYC-member way. I think he lives in Cobh now.

Anyway, if you go to Clongowes, you have to hand back your Cork credentials, even if you got expelled and repeated in Bruce.

Kate Middleton having Leo's baby has cheered me up no end. 😀

DanielGault · 20/03/2024 18:38

Did I hear that right? Coventry on the 6 1 saying he wouldn't go for it?

DanielGault · 20/03/2024 18:39

Coveney even 🙄

getoutahere · 20/03/2024 18:40

That's a bit of a shock. That must leave Harris as a front runner.

Heather H, Paschal & Helen left with Simon G..
Simon C is clever, he knows there is probably a huge mess waiting for the new appointee & probably doesn't want to shoulder any of the blame..

Wouldn't have a hope of being elected leader now.

DanielGault · 20/03/2024 18:51

I wonder will they all be thinking 'i don't want a piece of that atm'. It seems a right mess. Mary Lou loving it 😁

VoteNONO · 20/03/2024 19:02

@DanielGault Mary Lou & SF fecked up big time with the referendum...

Mary Lou said they were very unhappy with the wording of the acts but they would still be canvassing Yes /Yes.. If they had any doubts whatsoever about any wording that would change the constitution it should have been a big fat No/No.. However she read the electorate wrong & thought she would be celebrating a Yes/Yes victory with all her "frenemies" & Panti in Dublin Castle..

She even went as far as saying she would run the election again if it didn't pass!

Can you only imagine the SF celebrations if they had canvessed No No like true opposition should have.. They really would have painted the town red.. Major fuck up on their part.
Mary Lou would have loved her photo on every paper with the caption
"Sinn Féin celebrating the biggest No vote ever in the history of the Irish state after advocating tirelessly with their No campaign"

Well she still looked to be very much enjoying it all on the news! It's all very interesting, I'll be enjoying the coverage for the next while.

Oh god I hope this doesn't happen...I really can't stand HH.

I think a general election makes more sense actually, it has to happen within the next few months anyway, why not sooner rather than later?

ChimneyPot · 20/03/2024 19:56

I don’t think there needs to be an election for another 11 months.
The government have a stable majority so they should just get on with their programme for government.

My hubby said the same! He thinks they'll elect a woman Taoiseach to spite Mary Lou🤣
