I hate how Billy big bollocks some politicans are being now like Willie O'Dea saying he voted no/no and Lisa Chambers (senator running for MEP) said she voted against the care ammendment. Like what good does it do now when they didn't stand up to their party before the vote. If it had gone yes/yes we wouldn't be hearing a peep out of them except for how great it all is

QuiZZ · 11/03/2024 16:41

Is the progressive and woke era ending now?

Do you know whats really interesting apparently they don't represent all women but I can't figure out which ones they are supposed to represent. I was on their wikipedia during the referendum and it quotes from a 2004 Irish Times article that says they represent 300k women, now there were a lot more than 300k women in the country at that point but I can't figure out what their criteria is and who they purport to represent and who they don't https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Women%27s_Council_of_Ireland

That wiki article really says it all wrt who they represent.

If ‘woke’means not being a total dick to or about other people because of their race class gender sex whatever yeah I hope not. Such a lazy insult, especially when xenophobia and misogyny are so much more real and actually harm people

Good to see the kindness of the Woke Folk. That's nice.

Yeah. Tell that to the prison staff in Limerick prison who were dealing with Barbie Kardashian. I'm sure they're very keen to keep up the wokeness that allowed a dangerous and extremely violent male in to the female prison estate.

Or the woman in the women's hostel who was beaten up by the women with a penis.

Iloveshihtzus · 11/03/2024 17:28

@disaggregate we can agree to disagree with you there because to many of us Woke now means the erasure of women and the erosion of hard fought sex based rights, which were already under threat by the brining in, without consultation with the electorate, of the GRA in 2015, while we were all busy congratulating ourselves on being so progressive and voting for same sex marriage

Iloveshihtzus · 11/03/2024 17:29

Oh I see you are that sort of woke. I’ll just ignore then.

VoteNONO · 11/03/2024 17:37

Absolutely, cancel culture & no debate will be a thing of the past. The majority have spoken, it's time for critical thinking skills & common sense to prevail 😊

I don't know about Chambers but there will be plenty of politicians like Willie, who quietly voted against the amendments. Because let's be real, no-one wants the career they worked so hard for to end with them being cancelled and ripped to shreds by the bullies. Part of the reason the level of rejection has shocked even us is that people have been largely too scared to admit how they would vote. Politicians are no different, especially when part of their job is to follow their party on these campaigns. Unlike everyone else their vote is part of their job.

If you don’t feel the GRA bill is progressive to you then of course that’s up to you, but woke just means alert to discrimination, coming from the African-American. It’s a dumb insult that Trump supporters popularised, in full knowledge of its roots. If you’re not for gender recognition that’s one thing but why not be precise instead of using ‘woke’ as a generic insult?

What cancel culture? The main group whose voices weren’t platformed in the referendum were people with disabilities and carers who got very very little airtime despite standing to be among the most affected by the care bill.

The cancel culture that has resulted in the likes of Kathleen Stock losing her job because she believes sex and gender are not the same thing.

Not seeing why the resignation of a University of Sussex employee is all that relevant to a thread on the Irish referendum.

There was very very little focus on the GRA in debates about the referendum and tbh it’s a bit sickening how obsessives on here think it’s all that hugely important compared to the real material (etc.) deprivation people with disabilities and carers suffer on a weekly basis due to the hokey concept of care that was offered in the referendum.

JaneJeffer · 11/03/2024 18:26

Well given that this is an example of what Irish woke males think of women in the UK then yes it is relevant. Of course he obviously identifies as living in the 20th century too.

So a woman being driven out of her job in the UK can't be mentioned as a response to you lecturing about the origin of a word in a different culture on the other side of the world? Right so.

Abhannmor · 11/03/2024 18:29

No @QuiZZ . On IWD we voted in favour of a progressive position. The progressive era is only just beginning on this island.

Women in the home presupposes having a bloody house. At least Willie O Dea got that right. Though his party did more than most to screw up housing.

3timeslucky · 11/03/2024 18:32

And while we're at it, you don't see any irony in casually referencing an ideology which redefines language at the drop of a hat while pontificating about the origins of a word which is now widely and commonly used with a very different meaning?

Just try for a little coherence. It'll help things along.

Another few have quickly changed stance throughout the day too including Charlie Flanagan. All afraid of losing their seats. The tide is turning for sure!!!

Kathy Burke can just do one , to use the argot she prefers.

But I won't use Woke as a descriptor of any kind since it has been emptied of all meaning. It's like 'fash' or " politically correct'. When words are used for everything they come to signify nothing.

disaggregate · 11/03/2024 18:44

Maybe try some coherence yourself.

If you’re saying woke refers to what you’re characterising as an ideology to do with trans rights then how is the frequent use of that term coherent with a discussion about the referendum during which the GRA was not a central focus? Are ‘antiwoke’ people so consumed and self absorbed that they think the GRA is more important than the issue of the actual daily deprivations people with disabilities and carers go through, an issue that was actually central to the referendum?

And Kathleen Stock resigned, she didn’t ‘lose her job’. She drove/walked/cycled/scooted herself out.
