I read something about Assisted Dying this morning, but didn't look like it was going to put to a vote.. I'll see if I can find the article.
After 2015, I am far too wary of unintended consequences with anything official Ireland does.

Lorraine Courtney article on Assisted Dying

For anyone that's interested. So from my understanding, like our GRA, this could go through with far less safeguarding and checks than were originally envisaged.

DublinFemale · 11/03/2024 13:53

The abortion legislation could be board enough to tweak to include assisted dying.

WaveyGodshawk · 11/03/2024 13:53

I've been fairly insulted by the implication from media, ngos, politicians etc that we didn't understand what we were voting against. The majority of people I spoke to made an informed choice to vote No/No!!
So unbelievably out of touch

They may be afraid their conservative voters may move to Aontú. I do hope FF push back against the hate speech Bill that might just make them slightly more palatable.

On a side note Helen McEntee is still missing in action since IWD

Anyone else think it was very bad for that Leo & none of the other coalition leaders hung around Dublin Castle to get the final referendum count Friday night?

NWC appear to be doubling down. They’ll continue to fight for women’s rights. The sheer neck of them. They need to go.

Hear hear. OOC gave me the utter rage anytime I heard something from her in the last week. She doesn't represent me!

I voted No No absolutely. Info below from citizens information that it's alphabetical.

The listing on the ballot paper was the last straw for me that proved we have a more corrupt government than most dictatorships and sadly most can't see thro it. The date was selected to fall on international women's day and mother's day weekend to play into the optics that it's in women's interests to gave a yes.

this is completely over the top scaremongering, straight out of the totalitarian playbook, would you ever stop it!

Any constitutional change requires a referendum, so if they want to bring our patent law under the jurisdiction of a European court, we must vote on it. I've only given it a quick look over but from what I have read, I'm going with a No vote at this stage. I'm not a 'vote no to piss off the government' type, if I conclude it's a good change I'll vote for it. But from what I have read so far, I think it's not a great idea.

It's also worth remembering that ahead of this week, the plan was to have a vote in the near future on assisted dying. That is something that needs a lot of reading up on. Until recently I was very much in favour of assisted dying. Because I assumed there would be enormous checks and balances and it would be a rare occurrence. What I've become aware of with MAID in Canada worries me. I'm far from an expert on it and I'm sure there's a possibility that there is hyperbole on all sides. But I'm now much more wary and would need to be extremely confident that any introduction of assisted dying would be water-tight against abuse.

AFAIK there's no need or intention to have a referendum on assisted dying. It will be purely legislative.

StephanieSuperpowers · 11/03/2024 14:21

Apparently liveline is spicy today.

Anyway, they'd be pure fools to legislate on assisted dying given how popular schneaking in self id was.

GráMná · 11/03/2024 14:23

Joe Duffy giving a platform for discussion at the moment is so refreshing.

Who would have thought Michael Mc Dowell, Willie O'Dea and Joe Duffy as best allies...

Never saw that coming!!

DeanElderberry · 11/03/2024 14:43

I got the feeling last week that Oliver Callan might have been no-ish, at least on care. I also don't think he likes LV.

Jfc! I've just done a quick look at the Constitution and you're right. The 8th amendment would have prevented any assisted dying and the wording of the Repeal referendum has left it possible. That's just pissed me right off! Somehow I feel hoodwinked, even though in 2018, I'd have seen it as a bonus!

Hopefully the result at the weekend would be enough to put the brakes on them. They have to realise how out of touch with the country they are, even if they won't admit to it publicly?!!

Me neither. It feels very strange to say the least...

Agreed. I would, in 2018, have thought assisted dying was the humane approach. However, seeing what is happening in Canada is sickening, to say the least. It makes me very concerned of how this could go if introduced.

QuiZZ · 11/03/2024 15:05

There is also the not so small issue of the Hate Speech legislation, which will shut us all up, and which to me is exactly what they want to achieve.

Do you know whats really interesting apparently they don't represent all women but I can't figure out which ones they are supposed to represent. I was on their wikipedia during the referendum and it quotes from a 2004 Irish Times article that says they represent 300k women, now there were a lot more than 300k women in the country at that point but I can't figure out what their criteria is and who they purport to represent and who they don't https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Women%27s_Council_of_Ireland

They are particularly keen on representing women with penises. Are there 300k of them in the country?

The National Women's Council didn't even wish us mothers a happy mothers day yesterday!
Nor did our Taoiseach, Tainaiste, Éamon Ryan or Roderic.. They really despise the word mother don't they..

Bit of a stretch there. The only people who need to wish you a happy mother's day are your kids!

Sense from an unusual quarter indeed but no less welcome for all that.
Thank you Mr Moustache.
