It was a pretty low turnout, I wonder if people didn't bother voting as they had no clue what it was about.

Those who did and did their own research said nope, nada, not a chance.

It's wasn't considered a particularly low turn out in the end. It wasn't high by any means, but even Leo admitted it wasn't low tonight.

DanielGault · 09/03/2024 21:12

I think they just assumed it would be accepted without question. It very much shows the disdain they have for the public. It's going to be fun to watch them squirm.

Sinn Féin could try & redeem themselves by calling a vote of no confidence in the coalition perhaps?

OP posts:
VoteNONO · 09/03/2024 21:37

Also will schools be closed again for the next referendum in June?

I would assume so

That will be defeated and will be blatantly obvious.

Will nobody think of the poor Dún Laoghaire people 😢

DublinFemale · 09/03/2024 21:51

@JaneJeffer

Dun Laoghaire get to look down on us lessor mortals.

They are obviously much more enlightened

QuiZZ · 09/03/2024 21:52

I suppose it was IMPOSSIBLE to have this ref and the next one on the same day, thus saving a few bob. Nah, we have loadsa money for these referenda but carers, housing and hospitals etc. will have to wait in line.

Ah, but there is an important court case coming up involving Carer's Allowance I believe, so this one could not wait could it?

Backfired though. It will be interesting to see how the courts rule.

DublinFemale · 09/03/2024 21:57

The carers case is being heard in part due to that particular 41.2 clause. Could have the number wrong.

If this wins, the flood gates will open, it will basically null and void the carers mean test.

Why can't they take place on Saturdays? I took an annual leave day yesterday, as did many many more I'd imagine due to lack of childcare. With the referendum in June I'll need to take another holiday day.. Plus it's 2 days missed of all the kids education.

It won't just be a referendum. It will be local and European elections. They should all be on the same day. It would clearly be better for the vast majority of people for them to be on a Saturday though.

DublinFemale · 09/03/2024 22:17

They tried it on Saturday with the Children's referendum and that had a really poor turnout.

VoteNONO · 09/03/2024 22:42

@DublinFemale ah OK. It just seems ludicrous to close many schools twice in the calendar year to run elections. Why not push to the start of July when schools will be closed anyways..

Was that just lack of interest though? It's hard to tell sometimes. There was such conviction for marref and repeal that people would've moved heaven and earth to vote. Unfortunately not all referendums will generate the same interest.

I won't read that because Gript, but I'm genuinely stunned by McDowell's 'rehabilitation'. Or have I become more right wing. Seriously used to hate him but I was very impressed with him the other night. It's definitely made me think anyway.

festivefavorites · 09/03/2024 22:56

To be fair to McDowell he had nothing to gain by campaigning for no. He seemed to be genuinely trying to raise the alarm bells.
The interview is quite good he gives his theory as to why the AG letter to O'Gorman was leaked in the way it was which is a bit eye opening.
