They had a great interview with a gleeful Maria Steen too who referred to it as "the common sense referendum". Ouch🤣🤣
Michael McDowell has been a rock for the No campaign. A massive asset who made a huge difference. Would love to see him run for presidency.

That was a good interview which all MSM should be having with MMD.

The questions are what I would feel should have been asked by msm.

The fact that MSM won't ask the questions is questionable.

Gript etc would not have the traction it is gaining if MSM grasped the nettle and had balanced, robust debates on the issues.

VoteNONO · 09/03/2024 23:59

Not a popular opinion on here but I really like Gript. Not to everyone's taste but I have become increasingly untrustworthy of MSM which recieves govt funding.
I notice Leo answered two of Ben Scallan's from Gript questions this evening.. He walked out on him in a press interview a couple of weeks ago.
That was a very insightful interview with Michael McDowell who is regularly interviewed on Gript. If Gript is good enough for Michael McDowell (former Minister of Justice) it is good enough for me!

I am starting to look more at Gript, I don't share all their views but I am willing to hear the view simply to get an inkling what other people are thinking.

Helps for robust debate encouraged me dig deeper into issues.

Found myself down many a rabbit hole

Agree to disagree I'm afraid. They were platforming that John McGuirk dose (least deletion worthy word I could think of). Yuck.

miri1985 · 10/03/2024 01:22

Gript is the only media organisation that asks questions that the politicans don't want to answer. Its a pity that the other ones that hold their feet to the fire although from a different perspective (the ditch and village) don't seem to attend the press events and rather do investigative journalism rather than traditional political journalism. I think as long as you're reading Gript with a healthy pinch of salt for somethings its fine.

@DublinFemale ah OK. It just seems ludicrous to close many schools twice in the calendar year to run elections. Why not push to the start of July when schools will be closed anyways..

Its a standardised thing for EU elections, they have to be held between the 6-9th June (Thurs-Sun) but I agree that the weekend would be better for schools and Mon-Fri workers

Absolutely. Alan Shatter, Michael McDowell, Maria Steen & the Countess regularly give interviews on Gript. They were an excellent source of information (for me!!) in the run up to this referendum & in general. Also they are becoming more & more popular like it or not.
I hope the team are celebrating tonight because they definitely played their part in the No No landslide.

We'll definitely agree to disagree on this one! Gript definitely is marmite! Personally I love it, I'm not a subscriber but their articles are free to read anyhow.

Hey, at least we're civilised about it though!

You only have to look at RTE who are only a biased mouthpiece for the government to see why Gript are needed. They've come out of this very well unlike RTE.

I appreciate that. But I have a deep mistrust of Gript.

Some of them I don't like or actually detest and disagree with a lot of what they stand for but they have stood up and asked the questions so many people wanted answered to in these referendums.

I have a very deep distrust of RTE. Sure look at their scandal. There has been so much they have failed to report on. They have a very obvious bias to the government who sponsor them.
Gript & alternative news sites to msm are absolutely needed.
@honeyrider yes Gript have come out of this brilliantly. They really played their part in the No campaign. Their following is increasing by the day.
Michael McDowell, Alan Shatter, The Countess, Maria Steen etc have all contributed greatly to Gript during the referendum & prior to this on other issues. These very respected individuals would not be engaging if they didn't consider Gript a credible news source.
They have gone to town on all the post referendum failures & rightly so! Gript played a big part in the No side like it or not🤷

This article shares so great insights. Sinn Féin voters polled were the highest percentage of No voters in both acts. How they must be kicking themselves!

Exit poll reveals anger behind No vote

An exclusive Sunday Independent/Ireland Thinks exit poll today reveals why voters decided overwhelmingly to reject the Government’s proposed family and care amendments to the Constitution.

This why they are growing in subscribers. It's not that Gript are necessarily a source of great journalism, but they aren’t afraid to ask difficult questions that we never hear asked elsewhere. It's hard to know why other MSM aren't asking those questions but they are failing the public in that failure.
@DanielGault I completely respect your opinion on not wanting to read Gript.
It might seem a bit strange but I refuse to click on the journal.ie as they are very pro gender ideology in my opinion.

VoteNONO · 10/03/2024 07:34

@festivefavorites after yesterdays vote the journal may rein it in a bit. I read all news sources, can't abide by rte but I still browse & share articles etc.
I wonder how much the msm will change after the referendum. The majority are clearly out of step with the public which is why Gript is so successful (in my opinion!)

On a different note I would love to see Maria Steen join Aontú, she would make a great politician. Michael McDowell for president!

Aontú need to get credit here as they really are opposition in the proper sense. They didn't once change or back down from their stance.

All 1 TD of them 🙄

Honestly, I wouldn't give credit to Aontú for anything. They'll oppose what the Government suggests, regardless.

EarringsandLipstick · 10/03/2024 07:53

the majority of mainstream media, RTÉ & Virgin were very biased to the Yes side

That's completely untrue.

RTÉ were required to give equal coverage to both sides, and did so; their series with Justice Marie Baker, Chair of the Electoral Commission, on Morning Ireland, where she answered questions of fact on the referendums, was excellent and really helped confirm my decision to vote NN.

Exactly you are right @EarringsandLipstick all 1 of them.
One man & his party Aontú vs SF, Labour, FF, FG & the Greens. Not forgetting all the NGOs that back the Yes side, the mainstream media, all the money being poured in to the Yes campaign but the opposition of Aontú & a few independents won the day.

The debate on RTE with Michael Martin & Maria Steen was entirely biased. Maria was interrupted numerous times mid sentence in favour of Martin. It made no difference ultimately as Maria made mincemeat of him

It was a pretty low turnout, I wonder if people didn't bother voting as they had no clue what it was about.

Those who did and did their own research said nope, nada, not a chance.

It wasn't actually.

Referendums typically have low turnout, bar the Equality Referendum (61%). Other recent referendums have had turnout in the 30s (%).

Overall the turnout was 44% on Friday.

History of referendums shows turnout will be crucial
