I think you'll find a lot of MNetters will hide the thread due to the length of the title messing up their active feed a bit.

But good luck.

Can I join in? I found myself pickling a red cabbage, a cucumber on the turn and 2 carrots last night. Does that enable entry? I have never pickled before so I am unsure if they will be edible...but they will likely be bomb proof if we end up needing larder food.

Anyone else with Octopus and doing the power down evening hours?

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 23/09/2026 18:34

Course you can join in @SmallDFartyCarNRG the more the merrier and your pickles sound delicious 😋 🤤! Not doing the Octopus challenge l am with Eon unfortunately 🙄.

Hello, @SmallDFartyCarNRG . We pickled a red cabbage last week. Handy to have for leftovers, cold meats etc. and a good saving, a red cabbage in Sainsburys is 89p and a jar of pickling vinegar £2.25. Ours made seven regulars jars which would cost £1.45 in store each . Well done😺
Puss is a bit better thank you @Frugal25, she has stopped honking, thankfully and is eating well.
How is your Mama @DirtyGertiefromno30 ? Mune has treared herself to a large packet of strawberry liquorice, hope she doesn't make herself ill!

Holidaysandchocolate · 23/09/2026 20:35

Thanks for the mention gertie, I have well and truly fallen off the thread, although I do read along.

Need to get back on the frugal as beginning to worry about mortgage renewals.

Been a busy week, including two trips to the doctors for DC and I. Hopefully we will both be on the mend soon.

I don’t do the octopus power down, but think it’s similar to the u switch reduce & earn sessions. We struggle to use less power at dinner time but I try to switch the dishwasher and washing machine to other times. There is a company called Dwellow where you can see how green or not the energy being used is. I find it quite fascinating!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 23/09/2026 20:47

Hi I’ll sign in, used to be a regular on the frugal thread but left for a while.

My dd has just gone to university and I need to start watching the pennies again 🙈 currently overdrawn and waiting for payday on Friday.

Today I’ve spent £5.50 on coffee and a cake when I met up with a friend this morning.

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 23/09/2026 21:11

Wow, that red cabbage making 7 jars is brilliant @Twogingercats! 😮 What a saving too, definitely worth doing sweetheart.
Glad Puss is a bit better and has stopped honking, and that she’s eating well. ❤️ My Mum is ok thank you, she’s had a better few days last going off thankfully. 😘 A large packet of strawberry liquorice l have a feeling it makes you go to the loo a bit , hope she doesn’t make herself poorly bless her ! 😂

@DirtyGertiefromno30 , I’m hoping that is just the dark liquorice!

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 23/09/2026 21:31

Lovely to see you @Holidaysandchocolate😘 . Don’t worry about falling off the thread, real life gets in the way 😊. Hope you and your DC are both feeling better soon 🤗
It's worrying going for a renewal of your mortgage l know bless you . I’ll have a look at Dwellow, that sounds really interesting!

Morning all,

£28 for DD gymnastics but that's budgeted for and came out of one of my new pots. Go me.
Got a refund for something on vinted as it didn't turn up. £6.14
And asked for a refund on mingo as he didn't appear either and royal mail lost him so that's £40 back too when seller gets his bottom into gear. I'll have to try and find another on eBay before DD mentions him again.

Hope everyone has a brilliant Thursday xxx

I’ve been off to my local b and m looking for bargains. Got plenty of sliced meat and reduced bread and ours so I’ve made those up into 6 packed lunches and frozen them for DH. £4.30 including the butter which is a bargain. They freeze broadly and I’ve been doing this for years.

and I’ve lost been to my local “save from waste” shop. I got ten Frito and veg ( mini spuds, baking spuds, green beans, carrots, cabbage, peaches, blueberries, cooking apples, corn on the cob and cauliflower). Then for the freezer- a whole grain loaf, Jason’s sourdough, protein bagels, a Parkin loaf , 12 burgers brown eggs, a huge bunch of over ripe bananas for banana bread and it came to £3.50 and filled two carrier bags.

I’m doing my very best to do this atleast once every week. If I can manage twice then I tend to get meat too and they often do some really good deals. Today it was mostly sausages for 50p and I’m all sausaged out. But I’ll try to go again Monday/Tuesday.

A pic of the stiff I got earlier, forgot the pineapple! Today I’m making pineapple, ginger and turmeric sauerkraut as is my absolute favourite!!
