@cuckoolodger that's a great haul!

@Frugal25 oh no the Mingo saga continues. I'm hoping DD doesn't look for Mingo again. If she does maybe say Mingo's gone to help the Elves and they'll be back for December? Give yourself a bit of breathing space to find one that actually arrives! If you believe in complete fantasy of course, some parents prefer to be upfront about Christmas. My DD used to insist on Elves even when she stopped believing, I used to detest the little things, as it was yet another thing to remember in December 😂

So far £3.75 in Poundland when I was waiting for the bus home. Managed to eat my healthy salad at work and not head out to my favourite noodle bar.

Need baking ingredients either tonight or tomorrow first thing, will try to log later

RumBananaSundae · 24/09/2026 17:51

£20 today on my travel card.

Thank you for the thread @DirtyGertiefromno30.

Welcome @SmallDFartyCarNRG.

Sorry you’re under the weather @Holidaysandchocolate. I hope you’re both on the mend soon.

Boo to Mingo going AWOL. I hope it’s a promp refund for you @Frugal25.

We used to have a community pantry @cuckoolodger. It was awesome. It had to move so I was disappointed.

What are you planning on baking @Lockin26?

This week hasn’t been great. Three day weekend so a bit relieved but not. Two more work days. Yikes. Not sure what my head will do next week (or my purse). Might take a trip to the next Marks and Spencer over tomorrow to look at a cardigan.

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 24/09/2026 17:51

Oh no @Frugal25 that's awful about Mingo . Hope you find another one on eBay without having to pay a fortune sweetheart 🤞🙏❤️
Glad you will get a refund though. 😊.

Im so ready for payday tomorrow, currently about £150 overdrawn 🙈

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 24/09/2026 17:56

Blimey @cuckoolodgeryou’ve done brilliantly well done you ! 😍 £4.30 for six packed lunches is brilliant, and £3.50 for two carrier bags full is amazing 👏
I’d be sausageed out too after all those 50p sausages 😂. Definitely worth another look Monday or Tuesday though, you can’t beat bargains like that.
And pineapple, ginger and turmeric sauerkraut sounds lovely , enjoy 😋

Ah thank you sweetheart 😊.
Aw, so sorry @RumBananaSundae you’ve had a rubbish week. Well let's face it you have had a bloody rubbish year 🙄. Hopefully the three day weekend will help you recharge a bit. And a little trip to M&S for a look at a cardigan sounds lovely sweetheart 😊

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 24/09/2026 18:11

@Girliefriendlikespuppies it will soon be here sweetheart and £150 overdrawn is honestly not terrible. I can remember going overdrawn and the bloody banks would charge us a lot of money. Typical 🙄

SpookyHalloweenDeviledEggs · 24/09/2026 18:13

I remember going overdrawn and the over draft fee being absolutely astonishing im sure it was £60 that rings a bell.
Hopefully the banks have tightened up now.

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 24/09/2026 18:13

I’ve been off to my local b and m looking for bargains. Got plenty of sliced meat and reduced bread and ours so I’ve made those up into 6 packed lunches and frozen them for DH. £4.30 including the butter which is a bargain. They freeze broadly and I’ve been doing this for years.

and I’ve lost been to my local “save from waste” shop. I got ten Frito and veg ( mini spuds, baking spuds, green beans, carrots, cabbage, peaches, blueberries, cooking apples, corn on the cob and cauliflower). Then for the freezer- a whole grain loaf, Jason’s sourdough, protein bagels, a Parkin loaf , 12 burgers brown eggs, a huge bunch of over ripe bananas for banana bread and it came to £3.50 and filled two carrier bags.

I’m doing my very best to do this atleast once every week. If I can manage twice then I tend to get meat too and they often do some really good deals. Today it was mostly sausages for 50p and I’m all sausaged out. But I’ll try to go again Monday/Tuesday.

I am so impressed with that! Our B&M has a smaller fridge area than I do at home, so no chance of anything other than milk and slightly soggy looking sandwiches in ours! I went to Iceland today as am trying to gradually add bits for a buffer in case of war/storm/rogue AI whatever, and they have some good multibuy offers (10 for £10 has a lot of food that would probably survive a nuclear bomb) so, although not highly nutritious, my teen at least won't starve. I got an exciting back of plain porridge oats for myself and several UHT milk cartons. If you use Topcashback you can get up to 15% back too.

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 24/09/2026 19:01

I know @SmallDFartyCarNRG , @cuckoolodger has done so well l am green with envy🤣.
Not really am so glad for her . I try to plan a bit in advance , l always buy the Christmas food well before Christmas even though a little bit gets eaten before 🤣🤣🤣.
I have never bothered with TCB l am thinking l should though 🤗

@RumBananaSundae I'm making mini Victoria sponges and cappuccino bars for my late DMs neighbours. The house is now sold STC and they are so upset about it. I'm going to take meter readings at the weekend and call to see them with cakes. I called them Auntie and Uncle when I was a child, I've known them all my life

I did get the baking ingredients, also some other items fell in my basket for a Friday night treat in place of a takeaway. £28 Aldi.

I'm often overdrawn which annoys me, but there's always something else needs saving for / paying. will sort it once and for all next year! 😂

Frugal25 · 24/09/2026 21:04

I got rid of my overdraft as I live there otherwise. I remember being charged daily and the fees really racked up. Awful. Considering I work for a bank, I hate them! Ha ha ha

Oh wow, that's a great haul @cuckoolodger I actually didn't know b&m did food. I feel a bit silly. I don't go there much, I'm thinking I should. I wish we had a community kitchen here.

Everyone baking and making, it's making me want to make something too.

I also didn't know you could freeze sandwiches. What a great idea. I'm learning a lot today.

So glad your mum is ok @DirtyGertiefromno30
Def going to mention mingo has gone to help father Christmas @Lockin26 brilliant idea! How are you doing with the house sale? I bet the neighbours will love the treats, I hope you stay in touch, I'm sure you will xx

Catching up on sewing bee finally.

Lockin26 · 24/09/2026 21:44

@Frugal25 the house sale is moving fast. Survey happening next week, will see what that says. First time buyers who are ready to move in.

I'm up for freezing sandwiches too 🥪

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 24/09/2026 22:20

Aww that’s lovely making the neighbours cakes @Lockin26🧁.
No wonder they’re upset, especially as you’ve known them all your life. It's so thoughtful of you to do that 😊.
I have started watching Sewing Bee from the start @Frugal25 😁.
Tell me about the bank fees 😞!
Me too re the B&M food l must have been blindfolded going around mine , it is a very small one though so that's my excuse 🤣

I made the sauerkraut yesterday and it’s smelling amazing! Going to be tough waiting for it to ferment as it smells delicious. Is such an easy way to preserve veg as it’s reaching its end or you have too much of it. I also made banana and pecan praline cake with the over ripe bananas. So half of that has already gone and half will freeze. Pic of the sauerkraut

Have you ever pickled eggs? I saw your photo there and it reminded me I have a huge box of eggs that I think I might try with. No idea what to do though, so thought I would ask.

Has anyone here ever replaced a step before? My dog chewed the wooden front of one when she was a pup and dd stepped on it yesterday and it splintered... It's just the lip but prob should really take the whole tread off and replace. Not sure if it is something I can just DIY?

Twogingercats · 25/09/2026 11:44

Good morning.
Spending yesterday £28 at M&S ,bits for Mum, she likes their ice cream, veg and crisps. £5 on a local history group. Dh and Mum came too, and we liked it very much. It’s more reminiscence based, which is great for Mum, than academic, but a friendly group. We will join properly next year, until then £5 per monthly session as a guest.
@SmallDFartyCarNRG , would it be worth a look on YouTube re step?
@cuckoolodger , nothing like a good packed lunch, a little bit of home in the middle of the day.
@Lockin26 , lovely of you to bake for the neighbours, I’m sure it will be appreciated, nobody raves about a supermarket cake. I have stocked up on baking ingredients too, nice not to have to rush out and buy that one essential ingredient.
@RumBananaSundae , a new cardy is a frugal move, it will keep you snuggly warm!
Hope Mum continues well @DirtyGertiefromno30

Twogingercats · 25/09/2026 11:56

Oh, and around £20 to the Rington’s tea man.

cuckoolodger · 25/09/2026 12:39

@SmallDFartyCarNRG

pickled eggs are easy, I use white distilled vinegar, a teaspoon or two of pickling salt and then just herbs/spices for flavour. I do pickle some things like eggs and beetroot, red cabbage but I tend to prefer fermentation as it really increases the health benefits.

been to fur clemt today. No giant bargains but I got 5kg boneless chicken thighs, 4 packs of chicken sausages, 4 frozen potato products for the bottomless teenager and various other bits in the picture. Also got two bunches of roses. Total spend £13.50 and tomorrow I’ll be making chicken and sweetcorn soup, and then Sunday roast chicken dinner.

Afternoon all,

I need to start pickling etc. seems such a great idea.

NSD for me. Done a Davina workout, complained to royal mail about mingo as seller is doing naff all. And work is a bit quieter today so I'm cleaning in between mtgs.
DD had a fall at school and they notified me so I can't wait til 3 to go and get her for cuddles.
Roll on 5pm too. Friday night bliss.

I'm up to the semi finals on sewing bee now!!!! How exciting.

SpookyHalloweenDeviledEggs · 25/09/2026 13:52

Well today's been not too bad
£11 toiletries (including £6 on DH)
£20 in the butchers absolutely huge tray of pork steaks which will make three or perhaps four meals and something nice for tea tonight.
£10 in Tesco's on a couple of thank you gifts and a loaf of their (far too morrish) cheese bread for lunch.
Hopefully a lower end spend weekend this weekend. DD is exhausted from first few weeks back so it'll do us all some good.

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 25/09/2026 14:39

Afternoon everyone 😊
I’ve been busy shopping , been to IKEA and Costco , £51 in IKEA on lovely Christmas stuff ❤️ and £146 on necessities in Costco .
IKEA was lovely, gorgeous Christmas stuff but I was restrained😁😂 .Very proud of myself. On our way home now 😁. Hope everyone is having a lovely day 🤗
