They need a special can opener to get into them

I thought that was for after it was cooked. 😁

Yes, it is. It's a simple process:

  1. Put entire sealed pie tin in heated oven
  2. Leave for thirty minutes or until you hear a loud bang
  3. Call your home insurer, sobbing
  4. Use a chisel to extricate the remains of the delicious pie from the now-opened tin and enjoy!

Can you cook FB Pies in the microwave - obviously you would need to take them out of the metal tin and put them in a microwavable container first?

Bjorkdidit · 04/07/2024 04:56

Well you could but it wouldn't be a pie as we know it unless it's a combination microwave with an oven setting.

Best chance would be to treat it as a steamed pudding - perhaps put in a covered dish with a bit of water or do in a pan after looking for instructions on steaming on the Internet. Although it's not the right kind of pastry for steaming so I'm not sure it would work.

That would make a good experiment for the Tiktok cooking enthusiasts to post a video of. How to steam a Fray Bentos pie into something edible if you don't have an oven in or can’t afford the cost of using it.

I'm not sure you'd have a lot left if you went to the effort of decanting the contents of the FB pie tin into an ordinary bowl.

Plus, the whole idea of them is that it's a 'dirty' convenient meal for when you don't want to go to any effort - taking the time to tend and coax all the bits of it into a porcelain dish just completely defeats the object!

An alternative to Fray Bentos pies is the Steak and Kidney pudding. This comes in a non metal container with a ring pull and can be heated in a microwave.

Oh, I just heaved remembering the soggy, raw dough on top of brown sludge. Was there a special way to cook them to get cooked pastry under the top layer?

Yes. You open it before you bake it, so the pastry puffs up and goes brown.
My Granny cooked one in the oven with just a hole punched in the top and it steamed and stayed soggy.
Could that be the issue?

OnTheRightSideOfGeography · 05/07/2024 22:10

The big exploding puffy pastry on the top can be a bit disappointing when you have your first one and realise that's all the pastry there is in the whole pie.

It's very much like a luxuriant bouffant syrup on a completely bald man's bonce.
