They need a special can opener to get into them

There is no need for the overwhelming number of replies. I won’t be responding to any questions directed at me and can’t be bothered with this thread any more

Next thing thread will be removed for identifying details as there is a house somewhere without a can opener 🤣

B0G0F · 02/07/2024 20:26

@MrsTerryPratchett , the ones I gave were the cheapest and on special offer. I've also donated things like pet food and sanitary towels but maybe not all food banks want them.

Maybe OP should have thought before starting the thread.

diddl · 02/07/2024 20:27

I thought that there was only one question for the Op-why did they think that a special tin opener was needed?

Oh well!

What I mean is a version of second-hand healthiness. The subtext being that people who go to food banks should only be given healthy fuel to live, the bare, boring essentials. If your shopping trolley is full of biscuits and chocolate, give a few of them to the food bank as well. Not just worthy food.

And if my shopping trolley isn't full of biscuits or chocolate? Biscuits are useful if you are needing to skip meals as they are good with a coffee, but I'd mostly want actual food. Chickpeas are an easy source of protein and can just be drained and eaten with a bit of salt. When we needed the foodbank I'd have preferred more 'boring essentials'.

Eyup, let's hope she doesn't trip over her sulky pouting bottom lip as she strops off.

This is what a special tin opener looks like:

I was an embarrassingly advanced age before I discovered where the name Fray Bentos came from.

I just always assumed it was a made-up fancy-sounding brand name; didn't know it was an actual city, where they originally made/processed the products!

Is it 😮

S0livagant · 02/07/2024 20:39

BeachParty · 02/07/2024 19:35

They're bloody lovely though, naff off with "no processed rubbish" 😭😂
Maybe just give those in need of food banks nutritious unprocessed stuff like bags of dried chickpeas and red lentils?
Tins of peas etc.
Disclaimer I love chickpeas and lentils, and eat them most days. Just don't see what's so wrong with a "crap" pie every now and again!

I wouldn't give dried chickpeas unless it was an ethnically diverse area where people knew how to cook them. Red lentils or soup and broth mix but anything bigger I think is best tinned.

You made an MN post? Don’t start a thread if you don’t want to deal with people responding, it’s quite simple.

B0G0F · 02/07/2024 20:45

I wouldn't donate anything that takes a long time to cook

11 pages of responses about a frey bentos pie is excessive and I’m not even bothering to read it

It's quite funny

Not as funny as the Keir Starmer accepted £76,000 of freebies thread though

OonaStubbs · 02/07/2024 20:51

Did Keir Starmer accept £76,000 of free Fray Bentos pies?

Possibly the funniest ever reply to someone's own post 🤣🤣

McSteamyorMcdreamy · 02/07/2024 20:52

I don't mean that sarcastically op. It's just the sentence is randomly hilarious. 🤣🤣

I think tinned food was invented several decades before the tin opener.

Like Alexander Graham Bell, waiting desperately for years for somebody to invent the second telephone and give him a call!

wutheringkites · 02/07/2024 20:53

To be fair to the op, I'm assuming she's needed to use a food bank this week and has been given a tin she doesn't have an opener for.

It might feel like a minor issue, but we don't have any idea about her circumstances.

EVERYONE STOP TALKING NOW PLEASE AS OP IS UNHAPPY WITH US.

OP, I see you are now on page 11. This is most unfortunate. Did you know in your settings you can change it so all the posts show on one page? I have read as much as you and I am on page 1 🥰.

I've been on the bones of my arse and a canned pie was gratefully received. It doesn't cost electric to keep them and they can be opened with a cheap can opener and feel like a proper meal.

And when I was that poor, I couldn't afford tins with ring pulls so a can opener was a necessity.

*Edit to say it does cost to heat them, but they are free to store and have a long (eternal?) shelf life

Edited

I hope that being on the bones of your arse is a thing of the past @SamBeckettslastleap

What sort of freebies? Nice M&S tops? Chocolate? If he has too much, I am here, I need more chocolate and tops.

Are there any own brand versions of tinned pies?

I'm sure I've seen at least one supermarket rip-off tribute pie that looked suspiciously like the FB ones - can't remember which one, though.

If I recall correctly, it didn't last long as FB reduced the prices of theirs, so the own-brand one was no cheaper than the well-known one, then once they had vanquished the pretender and taken the spoils, their prices went straight back up again!
