They need a special can opener to get into them

Food banks love this 1970s type of food. You just need an ordinary tin opener. Have you led a very sheltered life?

DumbassHamsterSitterPerson · 02/07/2024 16:46

I'm a millennial and I'd like to point out that that doesn't mean I don't know how to use a tin opener!
Those butterfly ones are exactly what we had a children.

Iwantamarshmallowman · 02/07/2024 16:46

I volunteer at a foodbank this isn't a thing.

RatHole · 02/07/2024 16:47

The so called easy tin openers don’t work on fray bentos pies, they don’t cut through the metal.
Normal can openers works though.

Berga · 02/07/2024 16:47

Or....you could donate a tin opener to a food bank?

robotgun · 02/07/2024 16:47

My sibling used to work in the Frey Bentos factory in the summer holidays. She told us never to eat them after her first day there where she saw a huge crate of greenish kidneys being tipped into a processor.

saraclara · 02/07/2024 16:49

Yep, it's the fancy new-fangled tin openers that are the problem. The ones that cut along the very top of the side of the can, rather than just inside the rim. The ones that leave a raw edge.

But the cheap kind... the butterfly kind, are fine.

Yeah never donate them, because they taste worse than prison food.

You can just turn the tin opener around though, assuming it’s not attached to the wall.

I wonder if this is one of those occasions where a 'simplified' method is brought in (i.e. the ring-pull that splatters the food everywhere), and then people actually forget that the normal method exists.

Before too long, there will also be a generation of youngsters who would simply not understand a plastic bottle with a lid that isn't 'helpfully' tethered to it - one that enabled you to actually access the drink and drink/pour it, without having to rip it asunder (assuming you have the strength to do so), send liquid flying as you do, have an awkward tag left that makes it uncomfortable to drink from, and then struggle to replace the lid for recycling when you've finished with the bottle, which, ironically, was the whole idiotic idea in the first place.

Yes! They’re not just for food. Toiletries, loo rolls, washing up liquid, pet food, nappies………

PinkCandles · 02/07/2024 16:55

I swear they used to be nice in the 80s. I tried one more recently though and it was horrible

They are crap for tins of tuna too. You can't drain them against the lid very easily.

I’m sure they used to have more filling!
I don’t mind a fray bentos pie though 😋

Janehasamane · 02/07/2024 16:57

Whatever are you talking about. Normal can openers open them.

OnTheRightSideOfGeography · 02/07/2024 16:57

I think it's interesting how they very clearly attempted to change the recipe and reduce the amount of (already interesting) meat content - but then they were rumbled big-time, and had to splash a humiliating big message across the top, to tell everybody that they'd fixed it again; presumably as sales (amongst their usual highly-discerning gourmand customers!) had gone into freefall.

Any processed type of 'edible' looks gross-Hot dogs look really grim when the mush is being mixed...A friend worked as a student at Terry's Chocolate Orange factory and said she can't abide them.

Ring pulls are far easier and more accessible. Plenty of people with reduced strength/dexterity cannot open a tin using a can opener. ‘Normal’ cans going extinct would not be a bad thing. Unsure why this bothers you so much? It is not comparable to the new (shit) bottle cap situation in the slightest, they were brought in solely for environmental reasons and are not making life easier for anyone.

BifurBofurBombur · 02/07/2024 16:59

Wow, water is the first ingredient on the list. So at least 25% of a can is water and prossibly much more. How do they get away with it?!

I dodn't even know these were a thing.

It's you that's changed.

OnAndOnAndonAgain · 02/07/2024 17:00

Now I want one

Ponderingwindow · 02/07/2024 17:00

Aren’t canned goods a staple of food pantries? Shelf stable and durable. a can opener is a really basic and cheap kitchen tool.

if patrons of the food pantry are having trouble purchasing can openers, we could donate those as well.

Needmorelego · 02/07/2024 17:01

My husband eats them and we just have a basic ordinary can opener that probably came from a pound shop.
@isitworthit124 perhaps you could donate 20 quids worth of can openers to your local food bank and if someone needs one they can get given one.

Andthereitis · 02/07/2024 17:01

You could always donate a can opener.

Same here. As a fellow millennial I too can use a can opener. Ring pull cans didn’t exist when I was a young child in the 80s and 90s
