What own brand have you found that's just as good but astonishingly cheaper?

On the way to work yesterday I needed to buy a tin of soup. We eat at work and I didn't want anything expensive. Plus I love soup. I popped into Morrisons daily and Heinz was £2.50 a tin. Morrisons own was £1. I bought their minestrone and it was lovely. Who is buying these expensive tins?

Have you bought anything own brand that's worth it? And as good as leading brands?

Method is lovely, smells great, posh bottle etc but it really isn't any better than cheap alternatives.

It just does NOTHING! It looks nice, it smells nice, but does it leave anything actually clean? No! Any supermarket cleaner does a better job.

I couldn't disagree more , method multi purpose is the only cleaner i buy and apart from lasting ages i have never found a cleaner that compares.
I have never used other method products so can't comment on them.

As for branded tea and coffee. I buy Ringtons. Most won't have heard of them. The vans come to your door. It's like going back in time. I can bear other brands of tea but only their instant coffee. I don't know how they make it but it's lovely. They do online but I like getting them from the Ringtons man.

I've just looked online and didn't know this about instant coffee! I'll try it next time.

Edited

Ooh, used to be love the Ringtons man coming with his basket and delicious biscuits and gifts. Def looking only!

They're only up north aren't they? Mine comes fortnightly. I'd rather give up coffee than forgo my ringtons instant 😄
And . I didn't have a sweet tooth but their biscuits turn me. Especially their lemon and white chocolate. Gingers are lush too.

Our Ringtons chap comes every other Tuesday. I nearly fell over when he told me the price of the chocolate brazils at Christmas though (only really get them then) I did buy some, but also bought Sainsbury's taste the difference belgian chocolate brazils for £3.75 and they were nicer. Must remember for next year...

Their hampers are amazing and such good value. Everyone gets one from me every year (and tell me they would be disappointed if they didn't) Free delivery uk wide over £25.
Although they have just had a website revamp, so I'm hoping that hasn't gone up.

Nsky62 · 02/03/2024 12:35

Cuppachuchu
Ecover not great cleaning wise , I find Bio d, much better ( health food shops/ online) and cheaper, uk made.
There are a host of cheaper eco products out there, big green smile/ ethical superstore, and some great independent health food shops out there
Ecover and Method owned by S C Johnson, another reason not to buy from them, I personally refuse to buy major brands with colours/ petrol chemical cleaning, no need apart from the occasional chlorine bleach.

Omg I bought those brazils for exdh and me and DH ended up eating them 🤣 They're lush. I'll have to check out Sainsbury's. That's another thing sweet they lured me to.

Aldi spicy Mexican rice
Aldi peri sauce instead of perinaise
NOT aldi chicken of any kind though. Awful quality with chicken.
Tesco cereal and porridge

Lycamobile compared to EE.

Every element is better that McVities ones: more thick dark chocolate, more orange/orangier jelly, moister cake bottom.

Aldi tomato soup is really lovely.

Not quite the same thing but I've started making my own butter. Morrisons sell a 4 pint plastic bottle of whipping cream for £1.00. You can make 6 packs of butter and you can freeze it too. It only takes a mixer and 30 mins to make 2 packs. Wrap in greaseproof paper. It tastes really lovely.

  1. Pour in 1/3 of bottle of cream and 1 1/2 large teaspoons of salt and put mixer on high. 10 mins. Watch after 8 mi Ute's as it will start to go solid very quickly.
  2. Switch to low mix and pour away watering liquid (buttermilk) or use for making scones. Mix for 2 more mins. Keep mixing until one solid lump.
  3. Wash lump of butter thoroughly in cold water. Kneed a bit and wash again.
  4. Shape into square butter blocks. I used butter paddles.
  5. Wrap in greaseproof paper and put in fridge.
  6. Do above twice more.
For £1 you can make 6 packs of butter. Occasionally Morrisons sell this cream off for 9p. This is when I buy 2 bottles and make 12 packs of butter which lasts agesband cost about 20p.
BigFishontheTelly · 02/03/2024 13:49

I'm going to have a go at doing that, caringcarer.

We prefer Asda/Aldi/Lidl cereal to the branded ones.

Aldi version of chocolate hobnobs are amazing but addictive!

M&S baked beans.

These are great. 25p for a small tin and better than Heinz.

I've never seen this whipping cream in my Morrisons, whereabouts in the shop is it?

caringcarer · 02/03/2024 14:32

@hamsterchump it's in a plastic 4 pint bottle in a fridge by the cream. It looks like 4 pints of milk but whipping cream.

Bjorkdidit · 02/03/2024 14:55

That looked suspiciously cheap to me (a 300 ml pot is usually over £1) so I googled and found:

https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/morrisons-whipping-cream-4-pints-ps1-4021078

It looks like you can only get it if they have an excess of it at the cake counter.

I think it's probably only financially worth making your own butter if you can get cream for significantly less than the normal price, eg when it's reduced - in my experience it does last at least a week or two after the use by date, so it would be a good way of using spare cream if you have it.

Otherwise it might be an interesting exercise but not one likely to save that much money. But it might be a good way of obtaining buttermilk if you want some and can't find it in your local shops.

Most things in Aldi. To choose a few - their version of Lurpak, Marmite, mayonnaise. Their cheese and yogurts are really nice. There's nothing magic in cleaning products, so you may as well choose own brands for those.

Sjh15 · 02/03/2024 19:17

Ketchup.
refuse to spend £4.50 on Heinz. Own brand anywhere is about £1.50 and it’s stocked next to it!

LaWench · 02/03/2024 19:24

Lidls dishwasher tablets actually clean everything. Made a huge mistake when I bulk bought some fairy and finish tablets. Bought 100s of tablets that don't actually clean all that well.

LaWench · 02/03/2024 19:26

I actually buy very little branded stuff, only fairy washing liquid, Yorkshire tea and lavazza coffee beans.

SunshineStreamingThrough · 02/03/2024 19:37

Personally I think everyone has their own nappy preferences, for me it was sainsburys because they have elasticated backs which stops poo escaping up the back! I use a lot of tesco own brands. I prefer their shreddies to the branded ones but can’t think of any other specifics
