When do you put the heating on?

I’ve turned the heating on as it’s super chilly in the house. Already got warm socks and a blanket but got me thinking when do others put their heating on?

I swore I wouldn’t put it on before October but here I am…

Central Scotland. Very well insulated house. It's 17.8c on the Hive. Sticking heating on to get it to 19c. Sad - 16th September and heating on.

When I start to feel cold. Probably when it falls below 21 during the day. If only nights are cold, I set it to be on for an hour or so. I’m pretty sure heating will be on in October.

Seriously? Confused You turn the central heating on when it drops below 21C outside?!

No wonder some people have outlandish energy bills! Shock

I expect she means in the house

I was up this morning at 5am until 6.30 with dd. Finally got her back to bed but I had to initially take her in the lounge as she was shouting so much. It was bloody freezing! When I got back to bed I cuddled up to dh and even then I was frozen. I put an extra duvet on the bed tonight so I have two now one on top of the other.

Last year we managed to hold out until November and had planned to do the same this year but I'll be honest, I'm really struggling today.

Scotland - 13 degrees.

dressedforcomfort · 18/09/2023 16:54

Our house is south facing, very well insulated and a bit of a greenhouse tbh so heating doesn't usually go on until November and is pretty much off by the end of March.

It's a blessing in winter. However heatwaves are my nemesis, there's not a cool spot to be found anywhere in the house and we have to have windows and doors open from 7am onwards.

Floralnomad · 18/09/2023 16:59

We’ve had torrential rain today ( Kent) and I’ve still got 2 fans going in my lounge and had to have the air conditioning on in the car .

Comedycook · 18/09/2023 17:03

It's rained here in London today but it's still fairly mild. Just checked out the BBC weather 2 week forecast and last week of September is predicted to be 23 degrees! I hereby declare September is now a summer month rather than an autumn one!

RoseMartha · 18/09/2023 17:11

When its cold. 13 does sound cold OP so understandable.

OP a heated throw might help you so you don't have to have the heating on. They are toasty.

ifonly4 · 19/09/2023 14:33

Never before October, although, it usually feels a bit nippy by then.

Living room currently 20c and nice weather forecast next week. Forecast to be sunny an17/18c outside early October, so that'll warm the house up in the day, so hoping we can get to around mid October this year before we give in. It only goes on for an hour am for tge first couple of weeks.

Titicacacandle · 19/09/2023 14:36

Normally when I'm cold but with the COL still in full swing I'm going to try and last out till end November or we won't have the greatest xmas, can't do both.

mondaytosunday · 19/09/2023 14:59

If it's cold enough put it on. It doesn't matter what the date is - it may be 19 degrees here in London but if you're in Edinburgh it's a rainy 13 - I'd have my heat on if I lived there!

43ontherocksporfavor · 19/09/2023 17:36

Warm again next week apparently!

forgotmyusername1 · 24/09/2023 22:14

Level 1 - jumpers and thick socks
Level 2 - oodies
Level 3 - oodies and blankets
Level 4 - electric blanket
Level 5 - log burner
Level 6 - central heating as it costs about 2.50 an hour

We have not yet reached level one. Last year we got to mid nov before reaching level 6

Comedycook · 24/09/2023 22:29

22 degrees tomorrow...yay!

Lovelyjubbbly · 25/09/2023 23:17

I’m Scotland ( Glasgow) getting chilly in the mornings and night now!

LuluBlakey1 · 25/09/2023 23:22

I live in the North -East- it was 9 degrees here at 9 o'clock on Saturday morning. Regular lows of 13 in the evenings now.

We haven't had ours on yet but have lit the woodburner a couple of times for an hour or so.

Era · 26/09/2023 06:07

I’ve had the wood burner on most days for the past couple of weeks just to take the chill out of the air, particularly once the sun goes down

Lovelyjubbbly · 26/09/2023 09:00

I have the heating on right now very windy in Scotland! Doesn’t help when I always have to have a window open at all times regardless of the weather blame my hot flushes I get from endometriosis! 😂😳

Comedycook · 26/09/2023 11:25

Very mild today in London....I'm in a strappy summer dress and sliders today. Was 23 degrees yesterday.

OhmygodDont · 26/09/2023 12:47

It’s certainly starting to feel nippy at times. Hopefully not till the half term though.

crazy to think I was sunbathing in the garden the week before last 😅

caramond · 26/09/2023 15:11

It's currently 20C in the house and about the same outside.
I usually only turn the heating on when it gets a fair bit colder - around 16/17C indoors. Would of course love to keep it on more but not at the current prices. I expect bills will feel higher this winter without the government support grant.

43ontherocksporfavor · 26/09/2023 16:16

Sitting outside in the 20c sun after work with a cup of tea. No heating yet. If I feel chilly I just use a throw.

popandchoc · 26/09/2023 17:30

Still pretty warm here (Hertfordshire ) so won’t be putting on till we start getting cold in the mornings .

StillWantingADog · 26/09/2023 17:33

Heat pump here- Ours is on a thermostat for when it goes below 19 and it has been coming on most mornings recently between 5 and 7am.
