When do you put the heating on?

I’ve turned the heating on as it’s super chilly in the house. Already got warm socks and a blanket but got me thinking when do others put their heating on?

I swore I wouldn’t put it on before October but here I am…

I’m in shorts and flip flops (London).

I hate the stuffiness of central heating and would rather layer up unless it’s freezing … rarely have the thermostat above 18/19 even in the depths of winter.

Thankfully DH is the same …. DDs moan but then they swan about in tiny shorts and crop tops 🤷🏼‍♀️

readbooksdrinktea · 16/09/2023 13:17

1 December. I can't afford to have it on much. So, 1 Dec until until mid-March usually.

Totallyterrific · 16/09/2023 13:19

Im still in a t shirt with the window open......... so no heating on here yet. We try not to put the heating on at all before the end of October.
What is the indoors temperature in your house @Gh12345. Even with the windows open ours is 22c so definitely no need for heating here.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 16/09/2023 13:22

Currently 23 degrees in my lounge and have had the doors open.

My thermostat is set for coming on if the temp drops below 17 degrees. I can also control each room independently if I need a boost. So when I work from home I may bump the lounge up higher as I get colder just sitting still.

My bill for gas and electric was £1900 last year, and I have a large 4 bed detached so it obviously works maintaining it like that given the year prior, before the crazy prices and use of heating willy nilly was £1500.

Totallyterrific · 16/09/2023 13:23

@Gh12345 ah just seen you've said 18c sorry. We dont ever put ours on unless the temperature is 16 or lower - and even then tbh we try to resist. Its extra jumpers and leg warmers and tidying up/hoovering/exercising in preference to putting the heating on.
Id love to know where abouts you are (roughly) that its 18c already in your house.

This morning. 11 degrees and raining. It’s chilly.

Indoors?!

theemmadilemma · 16/09/2023 13:27

The heating will come on when it drops below 19 here. Personally that's a little low for my ideal.

The chimney is being swept in 5 days and I've just cleared space in the garage for the first wood delivery. So I'm expecting soon-ish. We prep for using wood end Sept/early October and try to keep that our main source in the evening.

We do have a house that holds the heat though thankfully - 1930's.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 16/09/2023 15:41

I’m cold today! I came home from a kids party and forgot I’d left the bedroom and lounge top window open so the house had become quite cold. I’m in an oodie, dh in his dressing gown and slipper boots. Dd has cuddled up in bed. I cannot put the heating on in September but wow I’m feeling the cold. I’ve got 2 cats climbing on top of me to keep me warm.

Where are you?

I'm in London and it's scorching...kids are in the paddling pool. Car said 28 degrees

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 16/09/2023 15:46

@Comedycook West Yorkshire. It keeps trying to rain here and feels probably colder because of that. I’ve always felt the cold easier 😅

Desecratedcoconut · 16/09/2023 15:48

We've got 14c feels like 12c. This is taking the piss. How far down the A1 would I have to drive to get back to summer?

WorriedMillie · 16/09/2023 15:52

We bought heated throws last year and held off with the heating for as long as possible. They really cut down our usage over the winter months

Lalanbaba · 16/09/2023 18:41

19°C here now, windows are still open at night.
Starting to feel fresh in the mornings but nice still.
Hoping to not have to put it on at least until mid October. I would like to not have to refill my oil tank until next year

^This. 10c higher 200 miles away ?!

AnneElliott · 16/09/2023 22:42

Not until October half term and later if I can push it!

Crazymadchickenlady · 16/09/2023 23:05

We were absolutely boiling hot and very humid at the Southampton boat show today. We put the heating on when the house drops below 17 degrees. We usually put the log burner on in the evenings before the heating goes on.

DinnaeFashYersel · 16/09/2023 23:26

Baltic tonight and been raining solid for 3 days.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/09/2023 23:30

NE Scotland and it is cold. I’ve got the heated throw on for now but had the heating on for a couple of hours on Thursday. We always know when the weather’s turning because the cat goes into her own (faux fur) bed during the day instead of sleeping on one of the human beds.

Indoors?!

Didn’t check yesterday but the outside temp is currently 8 and inside is 13.5.

Edited to say Rural-ish Scotland.

Totallyterrific · 17/09/2023 12:04

@Escalateandcreate blimey that IS worthy of heating in September! Super cold. Thats the average for our terraced town house in England in the winter.

Atomsaway · 17/09/2023 12:12

24 degrees in my house at the moment, so definitely no need for heating. We’re in Surrey.

Our thermostat is set for 19 degrees but I think we will reduce that to 18 this year.

Quite looking forward to lighting the wood burner, but not for a while yet.

Amazing temperature divide though!

NonMiDispiace · 17/09/2023 12:23

I’ve lit the wood burner a few times over the last couple of months, I will probably light it later this afternoon (wet and 16° outside, probably not much warmer inside but I have socks, cardigan and wool slippers on (plus the dog on my lap 😊) so not too bad at the moment.
Heating usually goes on beginning October-ish, obviously depending on the weather. The wood burner means I can turn off all the downstairs radiators and just heat the bedroom and the bathroom. Thermostat is set at 17°.

Calmdown14 · 17/09/2023 12:38

The turn is very obvious here in north Scotland but the house is still warm.

Slept with all upstairs windows open last night.

Don't have central heating but wouldn't be expecting to put storage heater or the wood burner on for a few weeks. It's usually after the tattie holidays.

BelindaBears · 17/09/2023 12:40

As late as possible. It’s still comfortably in double digits outside here in the NE, so wearing enough layers is perfectly sufficient for my household of healthy adults and children.

xogossipgirlxo · 17/09/2023 13:00

When I start to feel cold. Probably when it falls below 21 during the day. If only nights are cold, I set it to be on for an hour or so. I’m pretty sure heating will be on in October.
