When do you put the heating on?

I’ve turned the heating on as it’s super chilly in the house. Already got warm socks and a blanket but got me thinking when do others put their heating on?

I swore I wouldn’t put it on before October but here I am…

I'm in the 4th floor of a modern block with flats above behind and on each side of me. The main room and single bedroom have double glazed ceiling length windows and doors and they are south facing so it just doesn't get cold. It's like the observation lounge in the sci fi film Sunshine in the summer though :-(

That's really interesting, thanks for answering. It's just so different, - N.E. and detached, that it seems unfeasible to do that comfortably at the outset but makes more sense spelled out.

( I did live in London for a few years but the house was dire so I never really benefitted from the latitude advantage)

Summer sounds hard though - at least in Sunshine you could sweat it out with Cillian Murphy!

ssd · 15/09/2023 18:47

We're in Glasgow, its damp and cold, the heating will go on soon

shatteredL · 15/09/2023 18:49

I don't limit myself as to when I'm allowed to put it on, just as and when needed. I had it on the other morning as there was just a chill in the air when I woke up but I will normally put dressing gown/fluffy socks/thick pjs on before shoving it on.

ssd · 15/09/2023 18:49

There is always a real difference this time of year between posters from south of England and us hardy types up in Scotland 😡

The thermostat puts it on if the inside temperature drops below 18c - hasn't happened in South West yet.

Exactly the same here and in the South West too.

17CherryTreeLane · 15/09/2023 18:56

11 degrees here and we've lit the log burner for the first time. Looks like it will drop further, to 7 degrees next week. I'm in Scotland.

ThreeBearsPorridge · 15/09/2023 19:00

I put it on yesterday. So depressing.

Polis · 15/09/2023 19:06

The North South divide, and we aren’t that far south.

We are just going out. I’m wearing a summer dress and husband is wearing shorts and a tee shirt.

AvengedQuince · 15/09/2023 19:06

When it drops below 16 in the sitting room for a few evenings in a row. We also need to be in the habit of keeping windows shut for a while so we don't accidentally leave one open and let the heat out.

spuddel · 15/09/2023 19:08

When I'm cold! Scotland though, it's already quite autumnal and I live by the sea.

HideTheCroissants · 15/09/2023 19:08

Our heating is never actually off. It is controlled by timer and thermostat so it will come on it the temperature drops below 18 degrees, 14 degrees or 10 degrees depending on the timer settings (18 in the morning and evening, 14 during the rest of green day, 10 overnight). It’s 7pm here and the thermometer is showing 22 degrees and DH and I are wearing shorts & t shirts.

If we get chilly then the first defence is warm clothes, definitely not ramping the thermostat up.

AvengedQuince · 15/09/2023 19:08

I'm currently camping so it isn't that cold in the SW yet, I wouldn't be sleeping if it was.

MenopauseSucks · 15/09/2023 19:08

Thermostat is set at 17c whatever time of year it is although it's not come on since April.
I'm in Surrey & its 22.6c inside downstairs with all the doors & windows open & a lot warmer upstairs!
About to put a load of washing out on the whirly line to catch the sun tomorrow!

feellikeanalien · 15/09/2023 19:16

It's been wet and miserable all day here. We're in the NE about half an hour from the Scottish border. It's 15 in the living room and DD is complaining of being cold and has cold hands so I've put the heating on for a bit.

PickleDig · 15/09/2023 19:16

@Spottytoddler I am the same! It will never be on before 1 October and always off by end March. I try to hold out until November to turn it on if I can. Then thermostat about 16 degrees.

feellikeanalien · 15/09/2023 19:17

But that's only because I forgot to get kindling and firelighters. We've had the fire on for the last few nights.

StoatofDisarray · 15/09/2023 19:20

@Desecratedcoconut lol@ that Cillian Murphy comment!

I am too hot all the time, tbh. I think I may have said elsewhere in another thread that I never close my bedroom window, even when it's snowing and sleeting outside. I go on holiday to cold places (most recently Svalbard in January a couple of years ago, and Norway and Iceland).

The temperate weather in London/ the south isn't suited to my natural preferences at all and I get prickly heat, I sweat heavily and I shelter indoors a lot. I'm actually writing this from a cold bath right now!

Iwantcakeeveryday · 15/09/2023 19:23

I have shorts on and the doors and windows have just been shut! I think we will put heating on late October or early nov.

allhellcantstopusnow · 15/09/2023 19:23

Not before October half term!

readingmakesmehappy · 15/09/2023 19:23

Never before November. We have some nice jumpers and blankets

LindorDoubleChoc · 15/09/2023 19:28

I live in London. We're usually ok until end of Sept / early October.

LindorDoubleChoc · 15/09/2023 19:30

Just looked at London weather forecast - it says 26 tomorrow then 20 to 21 degrees until the end of the month.

Who says we aren't hardy further south? There is also the North of England inbetween btw. 😉

Fartooold · 15/09/2023 19:38

I'm in the North East. Still have the back door open all day and the bedroom windows all night.
Not tied to dates for putting the heating on, but tbh, I HATE false heat, much prefer having a blanket around my in the nippy evenings, and putting the heating on fairly low, just to keep, the chill off.
Not bravado, nor money saving, just personal comfort 😁

Vinorosso74 · 15/09/2023 19:39

It's still quite warm outside here (London) and very warm inside so not for a while yet!
I never stick to a particular date but whenever it's too cold. We usually start with the odd half hour or so then once it's colder overnight set it to come on in the morning.
