When do you put the heating on?

I’ve turned the heating on as it’s super chilly in the house. Already got warm socks and a blanket but got me thinking when do others put their heating on?

I swore I wouldn’t put it on before October but here I am…

I'm in the North East. Still have the back door open all day and the bedroom windows all night.
Not tied to dates for putting the heating on, but tbh, I HATE false heat, much prefer having a blanket around my in the nippy evenings, and putting the heating on fairly low, just to keep, the chill off.
Not bravado, nor money saving, just personal comfort 😁

I really relate to this! Slipping your feet out from under a warm thick duvet into a very cold room for instant heat regulation is a delicious pleasure!

Comedycook · 15/09/2023 19:45

Don't normally have to until November. I don't really feel the cold to be honest.

It's been 25 degrees here in London and will be 26 tomorrow. Its still summer!

Gh12345 · 15/09/2023 19:47

A lot of mixed replies, I had it on for 30 minutes today but think I’m going to try keep it off for longer. Decided to buy a small indoor thermometer, new pair of slippers and got out all my cardigans and jumpers to take the chill off.

Very jealous of your warm weather down south! 😊

It's 10 degrees and raining right now so the heating went on for 1/2 an hour.

It's been a really cold year and I sometimes used the heating up till June. I hope we have a mild winter!

Am I missing some beautiful uk weather? It’s been chucking it down and cold all day where I live

It's been mid-twenties in East Anglia today. Now it's 8pm and my phone says it's 19 degrees now with a low of 16 overnight. We're all still in short sleeves.

RedRobyn2021 · 15/09/2023 20:03

It been really warm today so the house is warm here, but last night it was really cold and I did think about it, but settled for a big jumper instead and a cup of tea

We try to wait until October half term but usually it's before then. Always wait until October though.

Same for us !

RuthW · 15/09/2023 20:28

End of October. It's still hot here and wore a summer frock today.

2chocolateoranges · 15/09/2023 20:33

We plan to hold off as long as possible, electric heating only here so it’s quite expensive.

we live in central Scotland and house feels relatively warm today. I do have a jumper on but it’s not cold.

Taytocrisps · 15/09/2023 21:18

It's been raining and miserable all day here in Ireland and I felt cold and damp when I got home from work, so I put the heating on for an hour. My laptop says it's 11 degrees.

SirChenjins · 15/09/2023 21:21

11 degrees here and pouring with rain - the house felt on the cool side so the heating went on for a bit.

Me too and flip flops!

I was sunbathing in the garden too.

BakewellGin1 · 15/09/2023 21:47

North East England here...
Hoping to hold off until October half term... We live in a terraced. Front room is always the coolest room in the house.
Stocked up on a few throws and fleece Blankets. New slippers for us all and dressing gowns ready for temperature dropping.
Currently still have bedroom window locked open and sleeping without quilt mostly so fingers crossed it stays like this a while longer.

43ontherocksporfavor · 15/09/2023 22:52

Still can’t get under the duvet. Midlands. Fan on, windows open. Still in summer clothes. Slight chill on way to work but sun was hot by 10.30. We ate outside this evening.

SweetBirdsong · 15/09/2023 22:54

When we are cold.

Gh12345 · 16/09/2023 09:11

Got my small indoor thermometer this morning, it’s showing as 18 degrees inside. Going to take some of the advice on here and turn heating on if it falls below 18.

Currently 11 degrees outside and hopefully it will get warmer.

Thanks everyone for all the input.

I put our heating on for a couple of hours this morning. It's 12 outside here and it has been raining non stop since Thursday so the house felt damp as much as cold.

18c is quite nice to kick in, if you can afford it. It means it's never cold for long enough to get damp. I do still override mine sometimes but it's a comfortable base.

In answer to you earlier question, yes bright gold autumnal sunshine and daily high is not forecast to go below 21c till the end of September. The nights feel chilly though at approx 11c by dawn. We are forecast heavy rain and storms early next week, but they said last week and nothing happened

Goodornot · 16/09/2023 10:02

It's 26° here forecast. At 18° indoors I'd still feel it was too hot for heating.

Survivingmy3yearold · 16/09/2023 10:16

We try to get to at least October. We're in a rented house with drafty doors and windows so hard to keep warm. Landlord has had someone out to "fix" windows but I think they need a full on recondition or just completely replacing, and we've asked for a new front door and he's said no. We got some oodies, thick fleece pjs and hot water bottles last winter and went to bed earlier where it was warmer rather than sitting downstairs. We'll still try and hold off as long as possible, although once it's cold enough to not be able to dry washing outside it starts to go on to get washing dry more that anything else. We have a tumble drier in the garage but I'd rather have the heating on and feel some benefit from the money we're spending ourselves

Escalateandcreate · 16/09/2023 10:18

This morning. 11 degrees and raining. It’s chilly.

Redlarge · 16/09/2023 10:20

Not until nov unless there is snow on the ground. I might use my log burner before then and ive got the thick duvets and blankets out to make up the beds today. Oodies in the wash as we speak. Its warm in the day here but has been dropping at night.
I only put the heating on when the children are in the house. Otherwise i wear my coat and hat if wfh.

tigger1001 · 16/09/2023 10:45

Am in east Scotland and the temperature has really dropped here but not enough for the heating to be on. The temperature indoors is just right for us.

Try not to put heating on until the clocks change but try to leave it longer if we can. Last winter think we managed to December before the heating went on.

iwishiwasonhol · 16/09/2023 10:49

NE here it was so wet and damp yesterday so i put it on for 20 mins last night just to finish drying some washing that my daughter needed to pack for moving to uni today ,would rather do that than use the tumble dryer

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 16/09/2023 11:10

Usually mid-late October, when it's dropping consistently below 18°c. The bathroom electric radiator usually goes on late September- early October as it's north facing & has 2 outside walls, it doesn't cost a huge amount as it's only set to 18°c, it just keeps it comfortable for middle of the night/early morning trips to the toilet.
