I saved 58p!

LarissaFeodorovna · 19/11/2022 12:47

How do you all know how much you saved? Did you get an email from Octopus? We've not had one...

If you go into your online account it's there. Not on the app weirdly. No email.

Excellent, thank you!

I saved £2.30. :)

Taslah · 19/11/2022 13:30

Hugasauras · 19/11/2022 08:55

We cut down 77% and earned £2.16. More than I thought we would get!

We cut down 90% and earned £1.38 so how does that work?! 😡

Taslah · 19/11/2022 13:32

Also all these £ amounts are not savings, are they? They are credits in addition to the saving that we have nominally made by cutting our usage during that hour?

Reluctantadult · 19/11/2022 14:57

75% = £1.51 here, thanks to switching laptop power off and having put dinner in the slow cooker.

tribpot · 19/11/2022 14:58

@Taslah the calculations are based on your average usage in the time period, so you've used 90% less than you would use normally. But yes, you're right, in addition to spending less (so say you spent £1 and instead spent 10p) you're also getting a credit for having used less.

@IncessantNameChanger during the pilot the slots were all 2 hours long. It is rather a lot of hassle for the sake of 1 hour. I think it was shorter this time as it was basically a rehearsal for the real thing.

Fufumcgoo · 19/11/2022 15:09

I saved £2.07 and used 93% less energy than usual in that hour. Kids loved it lol. So much so that they made me do it all week 😂

Allmyfavouritepeople · 19/11/2022 15:12

Earned 423 points which is 54p for a 73% reduction. Was quite useful for me as I just did a bit more work on my unplugged laptop with the light on and made tea after 6.

I'm quite a low user as it's just my frugal self so pleased I still managed to save.

I only got the text at 1am that morning though and I've an electric hob and oven so I'd prefer a bit more notice so I can get a meal prepped when it's going to be a longer time period.

WhatsitWiggle · 19/11/2022 15:18

I clearly hadn't used very much energy between 5pm and 6pm in the preceeding 10 days because my credit is ...... 8p!!

I used 18% less energy than normal, but I wasn't even in the house!

My peak time is usually 6pm-7pm so I'll be interested to see what difference I can make then.

Boo122 · 19/11/2022 15:45

We earned £2.51 and also got the 1000 octopoints bonus as we were in the top 10% of savers, which we is an extra £1.25. Better than I expected!

Gufo · 19/11/2022 15:56

Top 10% here too! 3.75 with bonus, I think

triedeyes · 19/11/2022 17:22

We cut down by 98% and saved £1.27. Also got a bonus £1.25 for being in the top 10%. We did turn off everything including Wi-Fi router , boiler and fridge freezer. The freezer needed defrosting anyway so I used the time to get that done. Actually I am wondering what was using the last 2%. Not sure I could do it again to that extent though, especially if they want more than 1 hour.

Very impressive!
The 2% was probably the smart meter and boiler on standby? Or any alarm system on stanby.

triedeyes · 19/11/2022 19:28

Ah yes, burglar alarm would have been using some, and hard wired smoke alarms too.

Passportpondery · 20/11/2022 00:54

57% and £1.21 here. That was by turning everything (including the freezer) off so I don’t see how we could do anymore next time!

Ah OK. I was toying with doing all of my tumble drying between 5-7pm to make my 10 day adverage usage higher 😄 not sure if that is what they had in mind.

I'm trying to think of it as a exercise in case we get enforced power cuts in the new year.

Reluctantadult · 20/11/2022 20:01

The results are in! I assume most people just displaced their use, but it always seems like energy storage is more of an issue here than energy generation so we always need such an oversupply to cope with peaks. Could be interesting to see how things continue.

ClownSchool · 21/11/2022 18:04

Next session tomorrow 17:30-18:30

poshme · 21/11/2022 18:17

I was just reading more detail about how they calculate it. They also do an 'in day adjustment' looking at how much energy you use during the rest of the day...

ClownSchool · 21/11/2022 18:19

Where was that please @poshme?

tribpot · 21/11/2022 18:24

The adjustment applies to weekends. If you scroll down through the FAQs to 'How do you work out my typical energy use?' it says

"If the Session is on a weekday, we’ll look at your half-hourly usage over the last 10 weekdays (excluding saving session days). If the Session is on a weekend, we’ll look at your half hourly usage over the last 4 weekend days. These half hourly averages are then subject to an ‘In Day Adjustment’ which will make adjustments based on how much energy you’ve used on the day of the session."

EveryoneToHisOwnGout · 21/11/2022 18:36

Whoop whoop, I saved 24p! 66% lower, apparently, though I barely use anything at that time of day anyway, and had turned everything off except the fridge, freezer and smart meter. Even turned the wifi off...Not quite sure what else I could have done, but I might try switching the fridge off tomorrow (not the freezer, as I'll forget to switch it on again).

I haven't received an email about tomorrow's saving session (why not, Octopus?), so thanks to @ClownSchool for mentioning it.

waitingwaitingwaiting2 · 21/11/2022 18:39

I earned 43p for a 71% reduction. Wouldn’t be a reduction I could maintain consistently but suppose it adds up over time and if everyone reduces usage. We were actually out that night so will be interesting to see if we can bring it down any further tomorrow when we’re in!
