Anyone signed up for this? Payments for shifting your energy use away from peak times/within a given timeslot each day.

@HandbagsnGladrags thing is, we use significantly less than the average for our size of household.
But the savings sessions happen to be when I usually cook (electric oven and hob). That's the time of day when our electricity usage spikes.
So it's been easy for me to save a lot by changing when I cook.

We aren't high users at all. (My DD is usually about £70 a month, for a family of 5 cooking using electricity)

Oddbutnotodd · 29/11/2022 05:02

To the Pp who saved over £14 how many units of electricity do you normally use in a month? That’s a lot to not use 6-7kwh? for 2 hours.

Brogues · 29/11/2022 07:50

DH showed me an article last night that these sessions were being scrapped now - perhaps we were all just too good at shifting need we don’t need to practice anymore? Did anyone else see it? I can’t find what he was reading to link sorry!

@Flapjackquack yeah I get that but the point I was making is that I CBA to sit in the dark for 45p!

Yeah we were having this chat last night too. Ultimately if we have just got home from work, long day, long commute, then we would rather sacrifice the 40p saving(!) and just get cracking with dinner, put the TV on etc, and start the evening off.

This isn’t scrapping the scheme altogether. It just means they were thinking of doing a session yesterday but then didn’t need to in the end.

We used 11.2kW per day last month. Our biggest usage times on our smart meter are 6pm and 9:30 periods.

Flapjackquack · 29/11/2022 08:31

It doesn’t really matter if those who didn’t use much at the peak times don’t take part really. The grid isn’t concerned with getting those people to lower energy so the incentive doesn’t need to be any bigger.

tribpot · 29/11/2022 10:34

I'd like to see some kind of minimum reward, @Flapjackquack , as when it comes down to it, every little will help to avert a blackout. Something like a quid if you reduce compared to your average consumption by at least 25%.

Flapjackquack · 29/11/2022 11:04

@tribpot but if paying everyone who cuts down a minimum of £1 is more expensive than importing electricity from the continent there is no point at all.

tribpot · 29/11/2022 12:03

I was working on the premise that the National Grid makes what can only be described as a shit tonne of profit, and could afford to reward people for making the effort!

NewBootsAndRanty · 29/11/2022 17:25

I just got the saving session breakdown email and I saved 0.055kWh in all.

I got a dehumidifier yesterday, my "use for an average Tuesday " on Loop has increased by 470%, so I think my future savings sessions will look a bit different to my first two...

I'm so annoyed. The app says I didn't opt in to session 2. I definitely did, I can't understand it. There's another tomorrow and I've opted in for that one. Well I hope I have anyway!

tribpot · 29/11/2022 21:52

I would contact Octopus, @triedeyes , there have been quite a few complaints on Twitter of people who thought they had opted in. They can't all have imagined they'd done it.

froginawell · 29/11/2022 22:08

I've signed in for tomorrow's! Hopefully I'll remember and finish work before hand this week!

JadeSeahorse · 29/11/2022 22:11

Well I'm in the Carribbean at the moment - have been for a week now.
According to Octopus saving session, for which I opted in, I haven't saved anything.
🤣

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 30/11/2022 10:51

Ive signed up for tonights but we arent going to be in so wont be switching everything off like we usually do but also wont be using anything so will be interested to see how many octopoints we earn compared to the last 2 times.

Lysianthus · 30/11/2022 16:59

@smilingthroughgrittedteeth We were away for last week's and opted in. We were in for the one before, and turned everything off too (as if we were on holiday except we were under the duvet scrolling on charged iPads). So no difference. First week saving was 1320 points and second one was 528. Completely baffled! Will be interesting to see what tonight's looks like.

gingercat02 · 30/11/2022 17:13

I'm out from 5:30 to 7:30 on Wednesdays but I've opted in anyway. Not that DH and DS will make the slightest effort!

froginawell · 30/11/2022 18:22

Currently in the chip shop getting dinner, left the house in darkness with DS playing computers by candle light. As I left it said our current usage is £0.09 /hour so it's fairly minimal despite his refusal to turn off his computer!

NewBootsAndRanty · 30/11/2022 19:14

Another one tomorrow between 17:00 and 18:00!

ClownSchool · 30/11/2022 19:27

Thanks @NewBootsAndRanty I hadn’t seen that one!

froginawell · 30/11/2022 19:45

Me neither! I like the earlier ones...

ilovebagpuss · 30/11/2022 20:32

We have done it again this evening more in the spirit of the thing than to make savings. However I would not do it if it wasn't convenient to save the few pence. I am happy to be in the pool of people who are willing to help if things get bad with cold on the way.
I agree with someone who said there should be a minimum reward (just to keep people involved) perhaps £1.50

tribpot · 30/11/2022 20:35

We were also rather half-hearted tonight, ds had a tutoring session and didn't want to have to explain why he was lit by camping lamps! Slightly exhausted by the idea of another one tomorrow, but on we go.
