How much do you spend on takeaway/delivery each month?

Hi

My mum and dad would usually get a takeaway each weekend like chinese or Indian food when I was growing up. Im now married and thinking to myself what is the average for a monthly spend on takeaways?? One on a Saturday night... a mcdonalds in the week... is that normal? Say every Saturday night to order pizza, Chinese or Indian so around £20-25. My husband doesn’t like the idea of ordering food for delivery obviously it’s a lot more money and it’s normally bad for you etc.. I just think of it as a normal thing that most households do a minimum of once a week! Especially if you can afford it and at the end of a hard working week fancy a treat! Tell me your weekly or monthly takeaway amount 😀😀

Once a month would be more usual amongst people I know.

We very rarely have takeaway, maybe a couple of times a year, McDonalds sometimes if we're travelling.

I'm happy with cheese and crackers on nights I'm too lazy to cook

BeneathTheMilkyTwilight · 27/06/2020 19:02

I think a lot of people do get weekly takeaway OP. Personally, with 5 of us and quite big eaters, a takeaway is a very occasional treat for us, to be had on birthdays etc.

IsAnybodyListening · 27/06/2020 19:03

It varies. Family of 4.

We have had Dd20 home from Uni due to Covid. And also have Ds15.

In the last month. Dd's birthday dinner £55 mixed chinese takaway.
Pizza delivery £25.00
Fish and chips £25 ish
Another chinese takaway (my dirty dinner fave) Dry ribs and salt and pepper chips with curry sauce £25.

BeautifulCrazy · 27/06/2020 19:03

OH and kids had one most weeks before lockdown. It probably costs £100-£150 each month.

user1487194234 · 27/06/2020 19:06

Once a week
Big Indian order
About £50
Do most cooking from scratch but enjoy a treat at the weekend

ritzbiscuits · 27/06/2020 19:09

Once every couple of months for us. A Chinese at about £20. We have curry every week but my husband has learnt to cook them from scratch properly. Could you try that? It's so much healthier too.

Bluntness100 · 27/06/2020 19:10

Surprised at how many people, call it a “treat” . To me no food is a treat and when we have a takeaway it’s just another meal, it’s no more a “treat“ than any other meal we choose to eat.

user1487194234 · 27/06/2020 19:11

To be fair we normally eat out about 3x a week

RiverMeadow · 27/06/2020 19:11

@ItWillBeOkayOnTheNight My DP is currently out picking up a take away for 3 and its £73

Wow! I hope it comes in sterling silver cartons 🤣

AliasGrape · 27/06/2020 19:13

We’ve just had a Chinese, £25 for the two of us including delivery.

In non-Covid times we’d probably have a take away at home once a month to once every six weeks, and McDonalds or similar would be once in a blue moon - certainly not once a week. So £5 ish a week if that. But then we’d eat out at least once in that time, maybe go to the seaside for the day and get fish and chips whilst there, or go somewhere else and grab sandwiches and stuff for lunch whilst out. So that would add up.

Since March we’ve had more takeaways - still not every week but over the whole time we’ve had tonight’s Chinese, pizza twice, fish and chips twice, and an Indian. Partly lockdown, partly that before lockdown we’d started renovating downstairs and the kitchen was only just about usable for a lot of the time - you could just about squeeze in and get to the fridge/cooker but it was a bit of a struggle and especially as I got more pregnant! Oh also I have twice bought DH a giant breakfast barm thing and myself a cinnamon swirl and hot chocolate from the local bakery, which I suppose counts as a takeaway.

nancyjuice7 · 27/06/2020 19:14

Every weekend we either eat out once or get a takeaway

We're a Couple, no kids, can afford it, don't overeat in the week and neither of us are overweight

And by take away is doesn't always mean pizza or Chinese.....We usually get Greek, Indian, Thai or Caribbean and it's not much more unhealthy then a normal meal

Cocktail4one · 27/06/2020 19:16

Another thought, I drink coffee from home and never buy from costa etc. I don’t drink or smoke and I don’t go out often but I’m not very adventurous in the kitchen. I do take my own lunch to work where as my friends buy from m&s or the canteen... they also have a costa coffee every day. My husband buys coffee pods that are more expensive than my normal coffee and he also smokes! He will grab a coffee while out at work from costa too. He also eats out every day at work as he doesn’t take pack lunch. So he can have his weekly treats and il have mine 😂

Sometimes it’s nice to get a treat. I would class a treat as my favourite chinese that is always nice or a dominos pizza, I ordered an indian for the first time in about a year last month and it was awful! Very expensive also just for the two of us. Pizza is around £15 if I get a deal and chinese about £20- £24 depending on the amount of dishes so a bit more expensive than a £15 pizza. McDonalds is cheaper so sometimes might grab lunch there on a weekend however I tried one the other day and it was cold and horrible 😭 so I sometimes get a kebab however they are very hit and miss, down to luck so I regularly stick with a pizza 😀 you can’t go wrong with pizza 🍕

£0

Prelock down we would often eat out once a week but generally I find takeaway unpleasant.

Nellylou · 27/06/2020 19:18

Never .. much prefer to cook my own food as I know what has gone into it..

FrugiFan · 27/06/2020 19:19

About once a fortnight but we don't spend much each time. Yesterday we had fish and chips which was £17 for three of us. Last weekend we had pizza on father's day which was £16.
Indian or Chinese would be more but probably no more than £25 and that would be no more than once per month. In total around £40pm I would estimate.

I think it is unusual to have takeaway or fast food twice a week.

BrieAndChilli · 27/06/2020 19:19

I used to work in an Indian restaurant and we had a huge number of customers who had a curry weekly either takeaway or sit in. So I think it is quite common.
We have a takeaway maybe once every couple of months as for the 5 of us it’s about £30-50 depending on what we have and what codes we can get plus we are rural so are limited to dominoe, Chinese and Indian.
I imagine if you live in a city with a wide choice of place and a variety of cuisines on offer you might order more often. It’s often cheaper in cities as more competition.

Reluctantcavedweller · 27/06/2020 19:19

About once a fortnight. Doesn't matter if it's not very good... The treat for me is eating a meal I haven't cooked.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/06/2020 19:19

Moved back to the UK last August. From then until March, we had none. Preferred going to Pizza Hut or Brewers fayre type places, at most once a month. Since lockdown we've had takeaway pizza 3 or 4 times.

We however have 'Lazy night' where everyone choses their own ready meal or pizza. And they can eat in front of the TV. Do this once a week unless we've planned a takeaway... Although takeaways are usually a 'sod it' meal if we've had a stressful day.

QuantamBaby · 27/06/2020 19:21

I'd say we get a takeaway once every 4-6 weeks and it normally costs about £40 for 2 adults and 2 kids.

I do class if as a treat as we buy stuff that I would never attempt to cook myself as I just don't have the skills/spices/time!

Bubbletrouble43 · 27/06/2020 19:22

We get a takeaway from my local favorite Indian once a month on dps payday. Its amazing. £30, and we thoroughly pig out. I missed them so much over lockdown. They delivered again the other day for the first time since March and I quite emotionally told the delivery chap " I've missed you so much" I think he was quite taken aback 🤣

butterry · 27/06/2020 19:23

We usually get Indian or sushi as a takeaway once a week which is around £50 for 2 people, a couple curries with starters and sides or selection of rolls/sashimi.

MrBennsshop · 27/06/2020 19:23

Once every few months, not much more than £100/year

Love51 · 27/06/2020 19:26

@Bluntness100 in my view the treat is not cooking! Or cleaning up.
I much prefer eating out to getting takeaway. My upbringing was different to ops though, we had regular takeaway, every year on parents evening. Fish and chips (was the 80s, and the only thing available).
Over lockdown we've had takeaway once. Usually probably about once a month, not necessarily payday though. I always have a midweek takeaway at start of December, as I struggle with that time of year.

Lockdownseperation · 27/06/2020 19:26

I would assume the treat is not having to cook.
burnoutbabe · 27/06/2020 19:27

Twice a week for us right now as we want to support all the local restaurants we usually eat out in when not in lockdown.
Do £250 per month right now? (2 adults)
