Who is planning to ditch masks as soon as we are legally allowed?

Is anyone else planning to ditch the masks asap? The only reason I wear one atm is because of the legal mandate and it will go as soon as that's dropped.

If you are staunchly pro-mask then this is probably not the thread for you! I know all the arguments on both side and they have been fully rehearsed on this board for the last 2 years. I am simply interested to gauge how many people also want to ditch masks asap, when the law allows.

It would be fab if we could have a thread on this topic that didn't include the words- selfish, it's no hardship, why wouldn't you?, we're in a pandemic ffs, I wear my mask to protect others etc.... that's lovely, and we already know!

Haven’t read the thread, but I would like to wear one without being judged. I work with some rather smelly colleagues who don’t understand what personal space is. It annoys me so much when strangers (or non family members) speak to me and all I can smell is their breath 🤮 I think I have ocd or something because it really really pisses me off.

@Janesmom

Wow. Lots of entitled, toddler-esque comments.

For as long as wearing a mask may reduce the risk of the people around me getting sick, I’ll continue to wear one. I assumed that was just what being a grown-up and not massively selfish required…

Me too. Being CEV I feel like nobody gives a toss anymore about those who are vulnerable. And medical staff must roll their eyes over all the preciousness about masks when they have to wait full PPE for 12 hour shifts. It's just all a bit pathetic. As for face nappies and muzzles, don't get me going...

I don't like masks but will wear them where needed eg shops, events while required, places where there are vulnerable people. It's not much to ask.

Postdatedpandemic · 17/01/2022 22:54

Agree @Madhairday I work with CEV people so have to wear a mask for about three hours a day. I have found masks which fit me and it is not too onerous.

I can go to the wine bar, have fun, get tipsy and not have to even think about face masks - great. CEV people can avoid the wine bar.

I go to Aldi in a face mask because CEV people should not have to avoid a super market.

A bit of give, a bit of take. Not so difficult.

I also speak to far too many medic people in my job. If you have asthma please ask for referral to a physiotherapist who can teach you therapeutic breathing techniques. PTSD is a valid excuse for not wearing a mask. On respiratory wards having less than 35% lung capacity is a valid excuse.

So, new question: Who is planning to ditch hand washing ASAP?

I take it you always used to wear a mask during flu season, what with you being so grown-up and so very not massively selfish?
ilovesooty · 17/01/2022 23:22

Once they are not part of government restrictions the wearing of them will down to choice, although some venues might request it . The term face nappies is unpleasant and childish and I'd expect to be able to wear a mask in certain settings without being mocked for it.

HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 17/01/2022 23:57

No I'll keep wearing mine. I like how it hides my double chin

Fathernetter · 18/01/2022 00:30

Yes and never again!!

Stuffin · 18/01/2022 05:03

For all those saying yes they will and everyone is selfish that don't you only have to look back in England when they removed the restrictions.

It wasn't long before the vast majority of people got rid of them so it is very clear despite all the objections and predictions on here only a very few will still wear one.

Timmytoo · 18/01/2022 05:23

I will keep wearing mine until the laser treatment starts working and I no longer have to worry about my “beard” 🤣

Mrbob · 18/01/2022 05:42

I will be wearing one as long as needed. Because I am not a dick

RichTeaRichTea · 18/01/2022 07:16

“As long as needed”

What is your definition of needed? If it’s by your own estimation then you could decide it’s not needed tomorrow. And then everyone who isn’t wearing one today is a dick, but tomorrow they aren’t because you aren’t.

littlepeas · 18/01/2022 08:10

@Mrbob

Mask wearing is not a reliable measure of whether or not someone is a dick. There are plenty of sneering, sanctimonious dicks in masks. Masks are not an easy, harmless answer to covid - ignorant black and white thinking is more harmful to society than someone quietly getting on with their lives without covering their face.
Whitefire · 18/01/2022 08:33

There needs to be a definition of as long as needed Who decides this? What are the parameters? Can I still be a dick in a mask?

Oh no, that's clearly not possible 🙄 😆

In my experience it is.

stupendousfragmentariness · 18/01/2022 08:52

Dangerous assumption. I wear a mask religiously and yet am an utter dickhead.

I was referring to the wearing of masks.

I’ve personally seen much worse behaviour from militant mask fanatics, so in my experience it definitely isn’t.

Honestly if your objective is to help others, you’d be doing something much more valuable by encouraging the genuinely vulnerable to wear FFP2/3 instead, and the not to get boosted and infected once the NHS gets back on its feet.

Wearing a (surgical) mask really doesn’t do that much to help stop the spread. My opinion is that it could well do a disservice to those in need of protection by making it appear there is a easy and effective measure at hand when there really isn’t.

Wizzbangfizz · 18/01/2022 09:13

Agree @IcedPurple I hope all the people screaming selfish were masked up during flu seasons. I suspect not.

toomuchlaundry · 18/01/2022 09:16

All those people burning them etc, did you do that on Freedom Day last year too?

I find masks keep my face warm, so useful if I didn’t bring a scarf and realise it’s colder outside than I thought it would be! Also helped hayfever in the summer too

yes, exactly.

If people want to wear them for the rest of their lives then that’s their call. But the people saying ‘no not forever, just while it’s needed’ who can’t define ‘needed’ beyond ‘I personally feel happy to take it off’, need to accept that other people are going to make their own calls about when they reach that point too.

DynamiteFilledRadish · 18/01/2022 09:42

Can you imagine if all us nurses (and other emergency services) felt so unwell from wearing a mask for our 12+ hour shifts

My father-in-law is in hospital at the moment. The nurses on his ward must find mask wearing difficult as they either wear them under their chins or take them off as soon as they aren't directly facing a patient.

Well I certainly hope you have always worn a mask to reduce the risk of people around you getting sick. Surely you can't just want to "protect" people from this one specific virus? You must have worn one every flu season, right?
