Who is planning to ditch masks as soon as we are legally allowed?

Is anyone else planning to ditch the masks asap? The only reason I wear one atm is because of the legal mandate and it will go as soon as that's dropped.

If you are staunchly pro-mask then this is probably not the thread for you! I know all the arguments on both side and they have been fully rehearsed on this board for the last 2 years. I am simply interested to gauge how many people also want to ditch masks asap, when the law allows.

It would be fab if we could have a thread on this topic that didn't include the words- selfish, it's no hardship, why wouldn't you?, we're in a pandemic ffs, I wear my mask to protect others etc.... that's lovely, and we already know!

@DynamiteFilledRadish

Can you imagine if all us nurses (and other emergency services) felt so unwell from wearing a mask for our 12+ hour shifts

My father-in-law is in hospital at the moment. The nurses on his ward must find mask wearing difficult as they either wear them under their chins or take them off as soon as they aren't directly facing a patient.

The majority of HCPs I know stopped wearing masks in places they were no longer mandated in the summer. If you’re wearing them for 12+ hours for work you may be even less likely to want to wear them in your leisure time
Toasterandjam · 18/01/2022 09:48

I'll keep wearing one until I'm sure it's safe. I don't want to get it again. Made me really ill and someone in my family still has long covid so don't want to put them at risk. None of us at risk groups either but you have to do whats right for you I guess.

HarrietteNightingale · 18/01/2022 10:01

I find masks keep my face warm, so useful if I didn’t bring a scarf and realise it’s colder outside than I thought it would be! Also helped hayfever in the summer too
Let's all wear them forever then! Some bizarre reasoning on this thread. I've never worn a mask outside because it isn't required by law so it makes little difference to warming my face in the cold, as the only places I have it on are indoors. The gaslighting that covering half your face in public is a perfectly normal thing to do rather than a temporary emergency measure is very odd.

HarrietteNightingale · 18/01/2022 10:03

If people want to wear them for the rest of their lives then that’s their call. But the people saying ‘no not forever, just while it’s needed’ who can’t define ‘needed’ beyond ‘I personally feel happy to take it off’, need to accept that other people are going to make their own calls about when they reach that point too.

Exactly.

tulips27 · 18/01/2022 10:06

Right not is a little premature, I would say at the end of cold and flu season which I would guess is some time in March.

tulips27 · 18/01/2022 10:06

*Right now

HarrietteNightingale · 18/01/2022 10:11

I think they might retain masks a bit longer anyway and see how the removal of other restrictions goes. But I think there would have to be extension to the coronavirus act legislation to keep them legally mandated past late March.

@stupendousfragmentariness

Dangerous assumption. I wear a mask religiously and yet am an utter dickhead.
Whereas I only wear a mask when strictly required, and I'm an outstanding human being.
7Worfs · 18/01/2022 10:25

My dentist wasn’t wearing PPE this morning, and thank God cause it was a nightmare to understand his instructions previously.

NHS staff should spare a thought on poor foreigners like me where the combination of PPE and regional accents make it nigh impossible to understand critical medical info.

Masks are racist. Wink

Which sort are you wearing? In order to ensure you never catch an illness from anyone, you'll need to be wearing a pretty heavy duty mask.
Whammyyammy · 18/01/2022 12:25

Came here for the 'I'll still be wearing mine forever as I'm not a selfish murderer halo wearing brigade' comments and wasn't disappointed.

Mine will be on the log fire as soon as they stay to stop wearing then. No issue with people that want to still wear masks for their own well being, but please don't expect the rest of the population to do so.

tappitytaptap · 18/01/2022 12:40

@Coconut49

Can't wait to stop wearing them. I feel out of breath when wearing a mask - may be psychological but it isn't nice. Have to keep pulling mask down to breathe properly! Plus I can't see as I wear glasses. End up with glasses on my head in shops and then can't see clearly. Will be delighted when we don't have to wear them. I'm triple vaxed so feel I have done my bit and normal masks do not reduce transmission by a significant amount. According to the studies I have read - peer reviewed studies that is.
Argh, this! I was very much a contact lense wearer but the mask mandate has coincided with my eyes not liking contacts very much anymore. I go into a shop, stick the glasses on my head and then squint at the shelves! Looking forward to when I don't have to anymore!
Worried456776 · 18/01/2022 13:48

Already have

NoEffingWay · 18/01/2022 23:25

The day I don't have to apologise for not wearing a mask because I feel anxious having things on my face will be the best day.

I have to wear them for work (hospital) and I hate every second.

echt · 19/01/2022 04:19

Well I certainly hope you have always worn a mask to reduce the risk of people around you getting sick. Surely you can't just want to "protect" people from this one specific virus? You must have worn one every flu season, right?

The poster was writing about present and proposed future mask-wearing for her. For you to project into -pre-Covid times in an effort to discredit her is a nonsensical argument.

I imagine there'll be an increase in mask-wearing during future 'flu and cold seasons, as good manners in trying to keep one's germs to oneself, as is common in many eastern cultures.

herecomesthsun · 19/01/2022 06:30

I wear a FFP2 as CEV, it is quite comfortable and I probably will wear one in some crowded situations after the mandate is gone. It protects me from flu etc.

HansChristianAnderfuck · 19/01/2022 07:29

Only on public transport and definitely not in summer

Dancingsmile · 19/01/2022 07:39

I will wear one if I have a cold etc to stop spreading my germs otherwise no.

Monsterathai · 19/01/2022 10:03

So it looks like masks are in the balance and it will be a very close run thing. Really hoping the mandate goes!

ConstantCougher · 19/01/2022 10:18

Me! I can’t wait to set fire to the little fuckers!

southeastdweller · 19/01/2022 10:24

I think it’ll go back to guidance only with masks.

Monsterathai · 19/01/2022 10:55

@southeastdweller

I think it’ll go back to guidance only with masks.
That would work for me!
TheMerrickBoy · 19/01/2022 11:16

I really hope so, but it's looking a bit hanging in the air, isn't it?

Triplecheeseplease · 19/01/2022 11:33

I’ll be ditching mine as soon as possible. Unfortunately working in retail we have to wear them but as soon as we don’t they’ll be gone. I have absolutely no issue with customers not wearing masks either.

Monsterathai · 19/01/2022 11:34

@TheMerrickBoy

I really hope so, but it's looking a bit hanging in the air, isn't it?
It is unfortunately- I think it'll depend on how much pressure the bank benchers can exert on an already weakened PM. At least the mandate will go in March if not though.
