Who is planning to ditch masks as soon as we are legally allowed?

Is anyone else planning to ditch the masks asap? The only reason I wear one atm is because of the legal mandate and it will go as soon as that's dropped.

If you are staunchly pro-mask then this is probably not the thread for you! I know all the arguments on both side and they have been fully rehearsed on this board for the last 2 years. I am simply interested to gauge how many people also want to ditch masks asap, when the law allows.

It would be fab if we could have a thread on this topic that didn't include the words- selfish, it's no hardship, why wouldn't you?, we're in a pandemic ffs, I wear my mask to protect others etc.... that's lovely, and we already know!

I think I would wear then on the tube or bus (close packed with others for 10 mins plus and I would be wearing the good masks n96s) tbh I've always wanted to do that anyway prior to covid just wasn't as socially acceptable here as it is in places like Hong Kong.

But supermarket shops, popping to gym etc where air is ciuclating and passing ppl by quickly then no I won't wear anymore.

Toanewstart22 · 26/01/2022 13:31

It was very difficult sometimes but we weren't in a pandemic situation so that has brought some unique challenges with it.

And surely benefits because pre pandemic we sure as hell didn’t go in to lockdown for them.

Essentially many CEV have got used to the overwhelmingly majority of people changing their way of living in order to protect them, and they don’t want to return to life when they weren’t at the centre of gov policy.

And that’s bloody unreasonable

Re Sainsburys, last time they had signs and tannoy announcements saying something along the lines of “Wearing a face covering is now a personal choice, please continue to do so if you can”. Would imagine they would bring these out again.

Oh the joy of disembodied tannoy announcements Grin
KJenner · 26/01/2022 13:35

I'll keep wearing one. The one time I didn't I caught a horrible cold 🤧
I also like the anonymity they provide when I can't be arsed to put on any makeup!

So you wore them pre covid as well?
Whitefire · 26/01/2022 14:24

Going on and on about pre-covid times and masks just makes people look a bit dickish. No people generally didn't wear them, but some now feel they are beneficial, that's their choice if they wish to continue to do so.

So do I, but most people just ignored them last time so it's just lip service, they're not going to stop people entering.

Nobody is asking for lockdown. This is a thread about masks.

Your attitude is pretty shocking too so I'm not going to engage any further.

No need for this as it's obvious what @KJenner means. Perhaps a lie down would help.

@HarrietteNightingale

Indeed, no more than advise to cover themselves and leave it to people to make their own choice. It’ll be interesting to see tomorrow as have a “shop crawl” planned to get all the things I’ve put off buying. I’m exempt but have only been getting the absolute essentials so to cut down on all the potential judging.

nordica · 26/01/2022 15:36

Lots of people seem to have missed the fact we're not going back to 2019, just going to back to how things were in December before Plan B came in. Masks were and still will be recommended in enclosed indoor public spaces, trains etc.

You’ve not had to wear at the gym though since July, gyms etc weren’t included in masks this time. Makes a lot more sense I think - none of the performative wearing a mask in empty reception to then take it off when you’re in a more crowded and less ventilated room 5 mins later. Haven’t seen a single person wear one at ours in the last few months.

I don’t mind wearing on the tube either.

Quite right, masks recommend but not mandatory (except on TFL). Some will choose to wear them and some will choose not to wear them.
Myitchyv · 26/01/2022 16:58

My autistic and anxious child wore masks pre COVID. I suspect he will continue.

Recommended not mandatory there is a huge difference.

No but the virtue signalling I'm doing to protect is nauseous especially when many, don't give a shit about anyone else normally.

Alexandra2001 · 26/01/2022 17:55

Haven't the supermarkets said they will keep the requirement to wear a mask? though it was never enforced even when it was the law.

ONS say 500k daily infections, official numbers levelling off and daily deaths also levelling off, 7 day average is now 263, thats incredibly high to be loosening restrictions.

Toanewstart22 · 26/01/2022 17:57

@Billandben444

Pray tell me what the pp means when she said she would carry on wearing one as he one time she didn’t - she got a cold

Because unless she wore masks pre covid all the time and never had a cold or if she didn’t wear masks but constantly had a cold - then it is illogical

I’ve been in sainsbursy Waitrose and marks in last week and not worn a mask once No raised eyebrows or looks whatsoever
2X4B523P · 26/01/2022 18:06

@Alexandra2001

As you say shops are not enforcing it now even though still legally required, unless exempt, until midnight. The messaging won’t be anymore than encouraging, suggesting, advising etc. No shops, perhaps other than small independent ones, would turn away trade.

Alexandra2001 · 26/01/2022 18:10

@Toanewstart22 You are such rebel!

Yep have this discussion with DD whose PPE requirements at work have increased to ffp2 and ffp3 masks just as we relax the requirement.... my argument is that as we allow all the major super spreader events to take place, what actually difference does it make, in the grand scheme of things, if i wear a flimsy mask or not?

Againstmachine · 26/01/2022 18:12

Nope as last time they said they recommend wearing a mask which is just going along with guidelines. They don't care if you are wearing a mask they care that you are spending money.

2X4B523P · 26/01/2022 18:27

I must say that I’ve not noticed any posts on here over what shops will and won’t do like there was last July. People have asked what shops stance will be but last time there was posters who were insistent that shops would refuse entry to anyone without a mask. Of course that didn’t happen so that’s perhaps why we’ve not had to endure such stupidity this time.

Whammyyammy · 26/01/2022 18:30

Welll I'm now done as not going out this evening. Masks will be going on the fire when oh lights it.... 🎉🎉 couldn't give a monkeys whatever shops 'recommend' I'll not be wearing one
