This is so sad:

I am posting in the hope that it will encourage more pregnant women to be vaccinated.

@anonanonanon123

That case is very sad but it's the minority. Just like the minority of healthy women and babies die in childbirth, just like occasionally healthy babies are tragically stillborn. As someone else said she looks to have been overweight a risk factor for covid. I'm sick of the scaremongering targeting pregnant women.
The point is that it's a minority which was entirely avoidable. Why take that risk? And there are still far too many unvaccinated pregnant women in hospital and, in particular, ICUs with covid.
GoodPrincessWenceslas · 03/01/2022 16:27

@Bluebluemoon

I'm sorry, I'm confused. The article says she died of a blood clot that formed in her heart and travelled to her lungs.

We have no way of knowing whether she would still be alive if she'd had the vaccine. I'm no anti vaxxer and double vaxxed but this blanket acceptance that "oh yes, if she was vaccinated she wouldn't have died" is ridiculous.

Unfortunately even in this day and age women die in childbirth or from other problems soon after they've given birth.

The entire report says she died as a result of covid, but you know better than, y'know, the doctors who signed the death certificate?

Blood clotting is a known risk of covid, she got the clot whilst in an induced coma necessitated by covid. Are you seriously suggesting that was all coincidental?

@TwoYearsMarried

I am pregnant, I was swayed towards having the vaccine as soon as I was past the 12 week mark. The day of my 12 week scan, I called all recommended numbers to book the vaccine for myself. I had to wait THREE WEEKS for the appointment. I said that I travelled for work into central London, am pregnant etc, can they not find anything sooner. The answer was no and that priority was being given to the booster programme. I waited my turn and am now vaccinated but I must admit I am very bitter about it. Particularly when I was waiting in the vaccination queue and a man, probably mid 50s, came out and told one of the doormen to tap on the window of us car as they'd squeeze his (similar aged) wife in. If the government and NHS are as concerned about pregnant women as they make out then this would absolutely not have happened. I have reservations about the whole thing but this made it ten times worse. The whole thing is a farce !
I had the opposite experience, I was booked in the same day when I mentioned I was pregnant. I think it entirely depends on where you are and who you talk to st the time

Why didn't you have it before September?
NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 03/01/2022 16:42

@brusselpout

I mean, if you are already skeptical of vaccines and have been assured in the past you are fine and shouldn't have them by professionals.. Of course this is going to affect your decision and trust in the long term even if the advice changes.
I didn't exactly feel reassured knowing I was told I had nothing to worry about when the whole time I could have caught covid and died, we should have been classed as clinically vulnerable from the start and not just "as a precaution".

worriedatthemoment · 03/01/2022 16:44

@QueenoftheNimbleFlyingCat surely if you ask you hcp the question then they will advise ? Like you ask other questions about things ? I mean its not like its not a big thing right now

roughmeasures · 03/01/2022 16:45

Everyone has their reasons for and against. There are many deaths on vaccinated pregnant (and unpregnant) women also. But that isn't reported on.

ClingyBab · 03/01/2022 16:46

It doesn't help that the information seems to change so frequently.

When I was pregnant in 2020 the line wss very much that pregnant women were no more vulnerable than anyone else, it's why I wasn't allowed to WFH by my employer, and why I got torn to shreds on here for not wanting my covid positive step child to come round when I was 7 months pregnant.

Kittykelly123 · 03/01/2022 16:48

It is horrible but heavily pregnant women die all the time. As a woman, being pregnant is probably one of the most dangerous times in our lives. I nearly died and did not have Covid. Poor woman and condolences to her family. It is very sad to read these stories and traumatic, especially when pregnant. The fact remains that most pregnant women either vaccinated or not will be perfectly fine if they get Covid. The facts that are presented are not all they seem to be and pregnant women are not dying at an alarming rate compared to normal. God help all people who are unwell and god help all well people not to panic and suffer with fear

Northsoutheastwest76 · 03/01/2022 16:51

Never a mention of co morbidities? The lady looks to have been overweight from the photos, which is a known factor in covid risk?
Bingo. Every time.

itsgettingweird · 03/01/2022 16:53

Back in LF1 a ph acquaintance caught Clovis whilst 29 weeks pg.

Very very poorly and ventilated via trachy. Baby born via EMCS. She then had a heart attack and a stroke after being home a few weeks.

She can now discuss it after all the trauma and said there were 6 pregnant woman all affected - 4 ventilated, I passed away, 2 babies also didn't survive.

It's an utter tragedy this virus affect those trying to create life so badly. It's a nasty virus.

Bellybutton88 · 03/01/2022 16:55

Regarding the article that 20% of patients in ICU are unvaccinated pregnant women, the numbers are 23 out of 119 patients. 23 women represents the 20%. You make your own judgement if that is risky to you but the media needs to make their headlines clearer

There are many, many articles from across the world stressing the vulnerability of pregnant women.You don't have to rely on the Guardian. Scientific American? Nobody should be making their own judgement without a medical degree and with anecdotal advice.

I see…. so FAT pregnant women should get vaccinated, but the rest don’t need to bother?

Give me strength.

Northsoutheastwest76 · 03/01/2022 17:08

This particular young woman was diagnosed with blood clots in her lungs in October,a month before she caught covid. But everyone just seems to read headlines these days and repost them here without even reading the story
@Toty I read the story and cannot see anything to suggest the blood clot came first.. she was diagnosed with COVID whilst pregnant abd gave birth on 3rd November.

Spongecake23 · 03/01/2022 17:20

I just read the article and it seems to state she sadly died of a blood clot in the heart.
I know blood clots are caused by covid in some cases, but I know pregnancy can also increase your risk of them too.
It doesn’t take away the seriousness of this, but I think the facts need to be taken into consideration first.

NearlyAlwaysInsane · 03/01/2022 17:25

This is so very sad. But there is probably a lot more to this story than the way it is reported, and sadly the way it is being read by most posters here, who seem more interested in vaccinations status than anything else. Someone who has to spend 6 weeks in hospital MAY have had a lot of other issues going on other than Covid. As we don't have access to her medical records, and until we hear from the doctors who treated her (and who frankly have better things to do and will respect her confidentiality), anything else is mere speculation by those who, like me, are essentially uninformed about this case. Unless, of course, Lancashire Live is a reliable source of medical information Confused

andweallsingalong · 03/01/2022 17:27

@Outlyingtrout

That’s not quite right *@Siuan*. Pregnant women were first offered the vaccine only if they were in an “at risk” group or were health care workers in Dec 2020. It was only in April 2021 that vaccination was recommended for all pregnant women. I became pregnant in April 2021 and am due to have my baby this month.

I think it’s understandable that pregnant women did not rush out for their vaccines following this U-turn in the absence of any meaningful campaign by the government to address their concerns and promote vaccination in this group. In actual fact, given the complete lack of discussion from anyone involved in my care about the vaccine during my pregnancy, I imagine that many pregnant women simply were not aware of the guidelines having changed or that they were even eligible. Not everyone follows the news and government announcements as we know. In addition, there are absolutely loads of anecdotal tales of women being told not to have the vaccine (contrary to official guidance) by their midwives and other HCPs involved in their pregnancy care, even after the vaccine program changed to include pregnant women. There was a fairly recent thread on here where a pharmacist had refused to vaccinate a pregnant woman. So lots of mixed messages.

My age group had not yet been offered the vaccine prior to my pregnancy, and when I became eligible I made the decision not to have the vaccination in the first trimester in order to await more data from the large scale study of pregnant women in the USA. I then had both vaccines in my second trimester and just had the booster in my third.

There needs to be a massive campaign to get this information across. It’s no good the government just telling people to get jabbed. They need to look at the reasons why people aren’t getting vaccinated, especially pregnant women, and focus their campaign on addressing that. It also needs to be discussed with pregnant women by their midwives during routine appointments.

Agree with this. A good friend gave birth last month. When gvt advice changed she asked a hcp for advice who said professionally she has to recommend it, personally she wouldn't have it whilst pregnant. Friend (cev with 3 young children) took her advice and didn't have it until after she'd recovered from the birth. She's now single jabbed and cases are rife. I'm terrified of passing covid to her and being very careful around her.

This. We have no way of knowing whether this woman would've had the blood clot regardless of being vaccinated or not.
It's the hypocrisy of the scare mongering i object too. We should not be giving pregnant women something else to worry about. How many unvaccinated pregnant women who contract covid are perfectly fine? Are there any numbers on that? Or is it just the few who die with covid who make the papers?

If I was pregnant I think I would have the vaccine regardless and take my chances. But these stories are just more scaremongering and vague facts. There is nothing at all to suggest the blood clot was caused by covid. One of my close friends was very ill with a blood clot whilst pregnant years ago before covid even existed - it is not uncommon.

But please don't try to make out that people who question the motive behind these articles are thick in some way. It's just as bad to try to scare people into having a vaccine they don't want as it is to try and scare them into not having it!

Have you not read any articles on this? Including those with NHS and CDC data? Or is this the only far from clear one you have read?
Katela18 · 03/01/2022 17:39

@Outlyingtrout

Absolutely tragic. That poor little baby.

I think the government could have done so much more to allay pregnant women’s fears and encourage more to have the vaccine. After very early messages not to have the vaccine during pregnancy, sadly lots of women remained skeptical when the messaging changed. It’s not something (in my experience) that’s been routinely discussed with pregnant women by midwives and other HCPs.

I can only speak for myself, but my midwives / Dr's have been very focal and encouraging about vaccinations during pregnancy. My pregnancy is high risk though due to complications in 1st so I suppose that may be why. I am triple vaccinated as I have had a premature baby and experienced NICU and if there is something I can do to prevent that happening again I will of course.

I do think the government should be investing more in educating pregnant women and young women who don't want the vaccine because they are planning children in the future. The original reports about the risks may now have been U turned but that won't be enough to fill a lot of people with the confidence they need

This is partly why Covid is so dangerous for pregnant women.

Pregnancy makes your blood clot more easily, and so does Covid.

When I was in my third trimester (springtime 2021), I was advised that my Trust now gives blood thinning medication to all pregnant women with Covid.

SmithofSilver · 03/01/2022 17:53

Absolutely we should. Covid is dangerous to pregnant women, if you chose not to be vaccinated, you should be worried. Fortunately, there is a really easy way to ease that worry by taking an hour out of your day to get vaccinated.
