Do unvaccinated people not see they are part of the problem?

I accept it's people's right whether they get jabbed or not, entirely up to them. However, the more people stubbornly refuse a vaccine then the worse it'll be for all of us. The hospitals will be more stretched and we'll have more restrictions, lockdowns or circuit breakers. People who won't get the vaccine are often the most anti-lockdown or restrictions, yet are part of the problem as to why we'll keep getting them.

Where exactly do they think we'd be without vaccines? We wouldn't have had a relatively normal 6 months or so with everything open, that's for sure.

Thety are complicated issues. Yes we should all be kind to others even with views with which we disagree but we should not stifle debate. I have not had the vaccine. I know many think that is very very unkind of me. I have paid a fortune to the NHS which I never use, hundreds of thousands and the NHS has a much bigger issue with obesity than it does with covid. If I am denied covid care because I have not had the vaccine I accept that but to be fair we should deny care to those over say 12 stone. Sugar can cause diabetes and is linked to dementia and depression and obesity which I call ODDD. They are huge challenges for the NHS. Cancer can be linked to lifestyle not all but some. So can alcohol. I don't drink or smoke or take drugs and have had 7 minutes of NHS time in 15 years. I don't go out much so am not really giving or catching covid so it would be a bit unfair if we changed the law to deny me NHS care for covid but I could understand and accept it particularly if denied care to those who don't pay income tax or who were over weight (50% of the UK is over weight)

Every thread you manage to find a way to talk about how much you've paid into the NHS. If there were 3 vaccines to cut the risk of serious illness from obesity and other lifestyle factors I'm sure many would take it.
Xenia · 20/12/2021 15:14

It is one relevant factor and I also say I would accept denial of covid care on the NHS for me as someone who has not had the vaccine. I can see all points of view here.

If people were required by law to have the vaccine then we could also require those who were overweight to have stomach stapling surgery against their will or indeed abortions. It is a slippery slope once you make these things mandatory.

RachC2021 · 20/12/2021 15:19

If there was a vaccine to solve obesity I’d happily take it. If it needed a jab every month I’d still sign right up.

ElephantOfRisk · 20/12/2021 15:37

Or you could just eat less and move more and that wouldn't cost the NHS a jab every month?

I know it isn't easy and there are very complex reasons for people being overweight and obese. I'm not here to bash, I know it's hard. I've been obese, I'm still a few pounds (about 4 ) over "normal" weight but I accept that it's my responsibility and that increases my risk of all sorts of illnesses.

My point here is that i'm sure there are people slagging off people for being unvaccinated whilst doing nothing about their own risk factors.

I know people are scared of covid. I know it's hard to lose weight. But I'm just really fed up with the polarisation and othering of everyone. I'm also triple jabbed at my own choice (well not really as i want to be able to go places and on holiday etc otherwise I probably wouldn't have bothered to be honest)

For the unvaccinated, you’re looking at a winter of severe illness and death for yourselves, your families, and the hospitals you may soon overwhelm.

OldaRailer · 20/12/2021 20:11

Xenia tbh I'm worried for your chances I'd you get it unvaccinated.
It's very much age related.

They are just selfish Their right to choose means we all have to have lockdowns et

Anti-vaxx misinformation is bad enough, but crap like this is just as bad.
mrsnoodle55 · 20/12/2021 21:11

This is my very unscientific but personal experience; I’ve just spent the last 4 days ferrying unwell covid positive people to hospital. We took 11 covid patients in over the last 4 days. All were unvaccinated (except one who had had 1 vaccine).

All 11 were really unwell. All will stay in hospital, a couple will be unlikely to survive.

All 11 have coughed and spluttered all over me, and all other staff. I feel riddled every time I come home from work. Again. Yet again. It is impossible to describe the endless dread and frustration of going to patient after patient and hearing they aren’t vaccinated. I know loads of family and friends who have covid at present; and like the vast majority they are all at home with a varying spread of symptoms. BUT, they are all vaccinated. Hence they are at home. Not ringing ambulances or clogging up hospitals. Or dying.

I’m sorry to be blunt; but the stark reality is that we are in this situation YET AGAIN due to the actions and choices of a group of people who could prevent this. And their choices affect others, me, staff, hospitals, then society overall.

I have all the sympathy and time in the world for people unwell with covid, who are vaccinated, and still require treatment. I have all the above for those who are unable to be vaccinated for medical reasons. But I have no patience anymore for those who have, to all intents, put themselves in this position, but then expect others to pick up the pieces and put OTHERS at risk for their choices.

I hate feeling like this. But all my colleagues in healthcare feel exactly the same. I wish people would think and properly assess risk. And decide how they will deal with the consequences of their decisions.

waterlego · 20/12/2021 21:17

Powerful post @mrsnoodle55. Your work must be immensely gruelling, but also frustrating given how much of it is preventable. Thank you for what you do. 💐

Frostythesnowperson · 20/12/2021 21:26

@mrsnoodle55 What about those previously infected but not vaccinated?

Fanmango · 20/12/2021 21:31

What's bad about it? The leader of the free world said those exact words in a press release earlier!

I did not know that. And my comment still stands.
HangingOutWithTheSandman · 20/12/2021 21:42

I completely believe that medical staff must feel frustrated if they’re treating lots of unvaccinated people but the ones I know also get frustrated at treating people who have suffered preventable heart attacks and strokes. A nurse in our family does a diabetic clinic and says it’s hard to see so many overweight patients who don’t follow the recommended diet and won’t lose weight.

Xenia · 20/12/2021 21:46

mrsn do you have sympathy for those who are overweight and ill with covid as little as you have no sympathy for those who are in hospital with covid who have not had the vaccination> In other words do you pick out that one lifestyle factor - vaccine and put it head and shoulders above being overweight or having a voluntary cancer caused by smoking which increases covid risk factors? Are we unvaccinated ones in a special sort of public hate reserved only for us or are those in hospital because they are 30 stone with covid despite vaccination just as "bad"?

milkyaqua · 20/12/2021 21:51

Crap? Crap?! I understand you are mysteriously protected - possibly wealth is a sort of magic shield against infectious diseases? not sure that actually works - but why should millions of others not hear a fair warning, which is factual and truthful, to protect themselves and their loved ones from a horrible death?

For the unvaccinated, you’re looking at a winter of severe illness and death for yourselves, your families, and the hospitals you may soon overwhelm.

So, our message to every American is clear: There is action you can take to protect yourself and your family. Wear a mask in public indoor settings. Get vaccinated, get your kids vaccinated, and get a booster shot when you’re eligible.

Oh come on, it is melodramatic nonsense! Does he honestly think every single unvaccinated person in the country is going to suffer severe illness and death? If so, I'm really not sure he's competent to be leading a country.

Narutocrazyfox · 20/12/2021 21:59

@chewbunn good grief, I've never heard such scaremongering nonsense in my life!

How would you explain myself, and three uvaccinated friends, who've all had covid in the past three months with little more than cold symptoms? I agree with a previous poster, this is just mad.

Feels like you’re comparing apples and oranges here. Being overweight isn’t a one off choice (or even two or three times), it’s something which happens over time and is a multi factorial situation.

Choosing to refuse to have a vaccine which is potentially going to save your life because you are choosing to ignore the advice of experts for whatever reason is entirely different.

What wealth? I am on UC.

Acinaces · 20/12/2021 22:08

@Libertybauble

Also, you’re at far more risk from me, double vaxed and boosted, than you are from a dirty diseased unvaxxed person with a negative test.
Dirty and diseased?

Jeez, Louise. You are disgusting.

ChequerBoard · 20/12/2021 22:09

I think Milky is referring Xenia who apparently is both too rich and too thin to either contract Covid or bother with getting vaccinated.

milkyaqua · 20/12/2021 22:11

Oh, yes, sorry! As ChequerBoard said.
