What does a ‘major incident’ in London mean?

Sadiq has declared a major incident in London regarding the surge in cases, but what does it mean for those who live/work/visit London in the next few days?

@BellaChagall

I am no fan of Sadiq Khan. I think he's been a terrible mayor. However I watched him on Andrew Marr this morning and I thought he was very measured and very reasonable. Staff shortages due to covid in essential services are a huge risk.
Why has he been a terrible mayor?
BellaChagall · 20/12/2021 07:54

Kirinm just my opinion, others clearly disagree as he got re-elected. Failure to tackle rising levels of crime, particularly knife crime, ridiculous transport policies which have crippled the industry I work in,.....I could go on. Mind you, his predecessor wasn't any better. We Londoners have been putting up with Johnson for a long time!

RosesAndHellebores · 20/12/2021 08:02

I'd like to hear him emphasis a little more clearly and a little more often the fact that the NHS is likely to be crippled in London because 30% of NHS staff in London are not vaccinated. Hospital staff had priority for vaccinations and clearly chose not to. I

Where is the data that shows 30% of staff in The NHS in London are unvaccinated? I don't think that is accurate.

BellaChagall · 20/12/2021 08:13

Rosesandhellebores I agree. He needs to get that message across, and also encourage vaccination in those groups where rates are low. He needs to play a more active role in this, he comes across as too passive.

I'd also like to see government ministers focus more on encouraging the unvaccinated to get vaccinated asap. I've just watched Raab on tv talking about the importance of getting boosted but I hardly hear them mention the impact of people not being vaccinated at all.

Which industries have been crippled? Is it the congestion charge / ULEZ?
Gothamsgirl · 20/12/2021 13:21

Exactly @EleonorBronteSmile
Not everyone choosing not to have the vaccine is antivax, they may have underlying health problems that prevent them having it, as well as being susceptible to the effects of covid, and increasing their chance of hospitalisationHmm. Without the detail of the '80%' unvaccinated in hospital we can't judge!
Let people choose, not be judged, afraid or bullied into having a jab if they don't want it!

It means that because one of our services, in this case the nhs, is overwhelmed. In this scenario other emergency services, such as the army are called upon to help, it is national strategy, I had no idea but my boyfriend does and has been called to assist. Basically it's when all agencies pool resources

Blatantly untrue in the hospital I work in. Over 90% vaccinated. Not all the remainder are regularly patient facing either (home based)

Lots of work being done to talk with and understand the reasons of the remainder (eg extra support for needle phobic, hour long calls with a virologist) and to help them decide to go for it.

Tiredalwaystired · 23/12/2021 08:35

And yes definitely want to stress that unvaccinated does not mean anti vaxx in all cases. There are plenty of people that are so needle phobic they are attending multiple appointments to try and go through with it but as yet haven’t. It can get to the point it is too dangerous for staff to proceed if the panic leads to lashing out so they have to stop.
