What does a ‘major incident’ in London mean?

Sadiq has declared a major incident in London regarding the surge in cases, but what does it mean for those who live/work/visit London in the next few days?

@Akire

I’m in London feels no different at the moment,nobody I know is sick or friend of a friend sort story lines. I half expect because he’s been seen to do so little over last 2y he’s got his mayor pants on and trying to be seen as doing something for a change. Boris couldn’t care less and carry on chops.

Hopefully just warning all stupid people who end up hammering 999 services out on lash this weekend that no they be way down list of priorities and take some care for change.

I’m in London and about a third of the people I know here have it at the moment. Just for balance.
Akire · 18/12/2021 17:49

I don’t have massive group no,I am surprised though as normally you hear things on grapevine from friends with larger social groups. I expect next few days it will change.

FrownedUpon · 18/12/2021 17:49

Ambulance services are in huge trouble. Hospitals can’t take anyone from outside London. Some hospitals may close completely to patients.

vickyc90 · 18/12/2021 17:49

@1990s but how many of them have been caught through testing vs have symptoms. The vast majority of cases in our friends and family have been picked up since the obsession with lateral flows started

Bananarice · 18/12/2021 17:50

Will firefighters drive ambulance again?

Unless something happened at the protest.

Can they reopen nightingales for fit patients with low needs staffed by redeploying hospitality staff, chefs, shop staff, admin staff who are at risk of losing their jobs with carers and hcp (if they can find them).

EleonorBronte · 18/12/2021 18:07

this reminds me of last year - surge in London as prerequisite for lockdown. ffs stop the world i want to get off now.

Next stop, Bolton!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/12/2021 18:15

@Mummyoflittledragon

where did i find it then? Confused

I haven’t heard of anyone without symptoms, most people reporting a minor cold but being aware the main symptoms don’t apply any more.

Unsure33 · 18/12/2021 18:18

The idea with the nightingale was to bring in medical students/ retired stafff/ army medics . What else can you do . No health service has a packet of extra staff waiting around for a pandemic .

Wrongkindofovercoat · 18/12/2021 18:18

From that Express article

The protest today saw people travel to the capital from across the UK and there are also rallies in Bournemouth, Blackburn, Gloucestershire, Bristol, Glasgow, Cardiff, Belfast and the Isle of Wight

Tillsforthrills · 18/12/2021 18:20

@DottyHarmer

All of the 20% vaxxed cases are elderly? Any data to confirm that?

CactusFlowers · 18/12/2021 18:24

Would you want to be looked after in hospital by a chef and an admin worker?

No, because if you are admitted it's because you need medical attention, and that sort of staffing can't provide it.

Declaring a major incident means they can cancel all staff leave, so that's really going to change Christmas for many people. I dint feel hugely frivolous about this one, so will pass on the jokes

EleonorBronte · 18/12/2021 18:26

What I can't understand is why are things spiralling so badly if we have so much acquired immunity and vaccine take up in the uk?
Just been reading about someone with horrific blood pressure issues, caused by covid - exactly how are the vaccines protecting us from this?

I know the vaccines have made an enormous difference to hospital admissions - so far - but reading MN you could be forgiven for wondering why so many are very, very ill if the immunity is 75% with booster.

KittenCatcher · 18/12/2021 18:28

No cactus I wouldnt which is why I mentioned carers and hcp. Hospitals are not run entirely by health professionals. Many other people can be trained up to be carers which is often what medically fit patients receive in the community.

Not that I've seen - it was reported as immune suppressed.

Some will be elderly, but one of the groups most over-represented in ICU admissions (ICDRU data) and IIRC deaths, are women in their 40s who are immune suppressed

Akire · 18/12/2021 18:30

It feels worse at moment because still waiting for actual hard facts. We can’t tell how much of the plans are get ready for worst or if it’s already happening. It does feel unnerving waiting next week or so.

MarshaBradyo · 18/12/2021 18:31

We had this called in January iirc

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 18/12/2021 18:32

Just been reading about someone with horrific blood pressure issues, caused by covid - exactly how are the vaccines protecting us from this?

Oh yes. It's got horrible cardiac and vascular effects (can cause stroke) and can have multi-organ impact. The vaccines make it more likely that a person will have mild disease (ie not need hospital) and so will not be having symptoms with that level of impact.

It's had a huge effect already - hospitalisations before the vaccine were about 9% then it fell to about 2%, and were waiting to see what it will be next

Namenic · 18/12/2021 18:36

I think it means hospitals may not be running their usual clinics and non emergency operations so that staff and capacity can be diverted to sick covid patients.

me4real · 18/12/2021 18:38

I'd imagine it means he can invent random rules etc as he's virtually declared it an emergency.

HeronLanyon · 18/12/2021 18:42

God I’d forgotten all about the nightingales.
