What does a ‘major incident’ in London mean?

Sadiq has declared a major incident in London regarding the surge in cases, but what does it mean for those who live/work/visit London in the next few days?

You could, but it would reduce the chances?

Do parents know people at your workplace are unvaccinated?

BusterGonad · 19/12/2021 12:04

Do medical professionals really tell anyone who'd listen the percentage of unvaccinated patients they have in the ICU? I find this so hard to believe, and surely it depends on what other underline conditions they have? I'm not in the UK so the only information I get is from my family or online Newspaper's.

user1471543683 · 19/12/2021 15:01

@Bunnyfuller
No, it's none of their business, just like it's none of my business whether they are

Bunnyfuller · 19/12/2021 15:13

I knew that would be the answer.

When you have a senior HCP speaking on the record to a major news organisation, then yes the information is reliable. They might not tell 'anyone who 'd listen' but they certainly do respond to both monitoring requirements (for the official and professional surveys, both of which infirm policy) and also to reputable press enquiries.

So when the matron of St George's Tooting (large London teaching hospital, which serves boroughs with covid rates over 1000 per 100,000) and she says to camera it's 80% unvaccinated, and generally younger than earlier in the pandemic, then yes I believe her

@Akire

I’m in London feels no different at the moment,nobody I know is sick or friend of a friend sort story lines. I half expect because he’s been seen to do so little over last 2y he’s got his mayor pants on and trying to be seen as doing something for a change. Boris couldn’t care less and carry on chops.

Hopefully just warning all stupid people who end up hammering 999 services out on lash this weekend that no they be way down list of priorities and take some care for change.

I don't personally know anyone locally (Greater London) who actually has covid, though lots of local children and teachers in my GD's school have it. And another GD who lives elsewhere is at home with Covid but feels fine, just a head cold. 9 children in her class were ill last Tuesday. I have a terrible cold, but two negative tests, I do worry about how accurate these lateral flow rests are. I do agree that the Mayor probably just wants to be seen to be doing something
KarenTheGammonRemoaner · 19/12/2021 17:47

You could move to a safe totalitarian country where people are medicated by force so you are safe? Freedom is not necessarily safe. This country is free.

Tealightsandd · 19/12/2021 17:48

This country is free.

Where do you live? I expect a lot of smokers will want to move there. Likewise people's whose drug of choice is opium rather than alcohol.

xmaswiththeinlaws · 19/12/2021 17:49

I think it means it's not a good time to do anything daft that might inadvertently result in a hospital visit because there might be a very long wait.

zarf2007 · 19/12/2021 18:05

Because the guy is a showboating, publicity seeking moron who had bankrupted TFL and only got away with because he could blame it on COVID.

He called this so that a) he can raise his public profile and look such a man of the people when in reality he doesn’t give a toss about Londoners and b) he can hit the government for more money (really easy to ask for billions when it isn’t a Labour government that needs to find it isn’t it Sadiq).

He has done nothing for London and the only people I hate more are the dumb liberals who keep voting for him.

anon666 · 19/12/2021 18:07

It will honestly be because of concerns about the resilience of the public sector systems in London to cope with the levels of covid in the community, for two reasons:

  • numbers of public sector staff (including health and social care) catching Covid
  • NHS overwhelmed by numbers of people requiring health and social care support because of covid

All the public services are already on high alert, planning what to do when the inevitable wave of covid cases starts arriving at A&E.

London is just as always at the start of the curve, and will take the brunt of it due to density of population. The political will to do anything meaningful will arrive too late again.

By the time the crisis reaches the Tory safe seats, all the upper middle classes will be safely at home behind their laptops, with their ocado shopping and amazon purchases arriving in time for Xmas.

Even my local Costa coffee is take away only because of staff shortages. My team (NHS) and hospital ward staffing are already suffering staff shortages.

@RosesAndHellebores

Slightly different spin on this. We are SW London, Surrey borders. DH and I were boostered three weeks ago (very efficient service), dd was bolstered about two weeks ago (slightly vulnerable), ds 26 was boostered yesterday. There is a walk-in up the road from us for 18-40s. There are more walk ins in London. Very little excuse for anyone to be unvaccinated.

DH goes up to London daily on public transport; dd is teaching and has been sent home for a day twice this half term pending a PCR test both of which have been -ve.

I think we must not forget that Sadiq along with local NHS leaders is left. Some of this is about politics rather than covid and also Boris's dishonourable beha iour that has understandably brought out the worst from the left. Whilst Boris deserves it, the public does not deserve to be used as covid collateral by the left

I wonder if anyone k owns how many NHS staff in London are antivax because presumably that is causing some or a significant percentage take of the staffing problems.

I work on a London hospital. Over 90% of staff are vaccinated. Not all the remainder are front line.

But we all know you can still get it with jabs and boosters so that’s what’s causing the staff shortages - we can’t risk coming in with any sign of it because of the vulnerable patients in our care. Hence rolling levels of ten day sickness getting worse by the day.

Vaccines most definitely work for keeping most people out of hospital - but they won’t help necessarily with staff shortages.

So to see all these cynical comments about political showboating is so depressing, knowing people personally who are volunteering to take no time off at Christmas to do their public service duty and cover others. 😔

The truth hurts.
petelacey · 19/12/2021 18:24

Khan is just feeling a little irrelevant, so he's conjured up some words to feel more important. I read the announcement and thought about train crash, terrorists, but no, just the Covid nonsense rehashed. He needs to get a life.

Lovely13 · 19/12/2021 18:30

I immediately had an image of corporal jones from dad’s army running around, saying ‘Don’t panic!’

pinkpantherpink · 19/12/2021 19:30

Usually means more meetings with all relevant parties to talk about what's happened, happening and plans for next steps

zarf2007 · 19/12/2021 19:31

As usual the liberal/lefty mumsnet moderators are removing messages that criticise Sadiq, free speech at its finest.

Wrongkindofovercoat · 19/12/2021 19:58

Perhaps Sadiq Khan is privy to more information than the general public are, and has done this because of that information ? If he does nothing and the shit hit's the fan it will be his fault ? Damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

BellaChagall · 19/12/2021 20:34

I am no fan of Sadiq Khan. I think he's been a terrible mayor. However I watched him on Andrew Marr this morning and I thought he was very measured and very reasonable. Staff shortages due to covid in essential services are a huge risk.

Wrongkindofovercoat · 19/12/2021 21:10

Because the guy is a showboating, publicity seeking moron are we talking about Sadiq or Boris ? Wink

But what has that got to do with political showboating of Khan?
UniversalAunt · 19/12/2021 22:37

@Maskless, I did say ‘superfluous’ activity 😉

UniversalAunt · 20/12/2021 00:03

@UnmentionedElephantDildo TY for the link to the ICNARC data.

It certainly makes for an interesting read & is very useful to have sound data about the relationship between critical Covid care & vaccination status.

If the news reports quoted data sources such as ICNARC & then cut to a comment from a local NHS staff member, I’d find that to more credible journalism.

Borisisafecklesstoad · 20/12/2021 01:55

So surely its time to start taxing antivaxxers like we do smokers and drinkers, body autonomy is grand, but when push comes to shove i dont see anyone accepting that preventable hospital admission should trump that of a kid with a broken arm/ granny with chest pains...
