What does a ‘major incident’ in London mean?

Sadiq has declared a major incident in London regarding the surge in cases, but what does it mean for those who live/work/visit London in the next few days?

NightmareSlashDelightful · 18/12/2021 16:26

From the BBC:

Major incidents have previously been called in response to the Grenfell Tower fire in June 2017 and the terror attacks at Westminster Bridge and London Bridge.

A major incident is any emergency which requires the implementation of special arrangements by one or all of the emergency services, the NHS or the local authority.

It means the emergency services and hospitals cannot guarantee their normal level of response.

XenoBitch · 18/12/2021 16:27

One of the measures is calling staff who are off duty, and asking them to come into work.

Toastmost · 18/12/2021 16:28

Apparently he's done it so they don't have essential workers having to isolate over the coming weeks which is looking likely due to the rise in numbers. I'm not sure what it will actually mean though, probably not much.

Wilma55 · 18/12/2021 16:29

Or using firefighters to drive ambulances.

2reefsin30knots · 18/12/2021 16:29

I think it means they think they need a strategic precursor to stricter measures.

It was breaking on the bbc about an hour ago
Puppylucky · 18/12/2021 16:31

It is the first step to Sadiq asking for a bail out from the Govt. It's a political move not necessarily a public health move-see the reference to the local authority in the definition above. He has done before - earlier this year was the last time - as a preamble to asking for a bail out for the tube.

DottyHarmer · 18/12/2021 16:32

Just what are we going to do about the unvaxxed?

I have on excellent authority that in my city hospital 80% of covid patients are unvaxxed. The 20% vaccinated are elderly.

Of course vaccinated people can pass the virus on and indeed be ill, but if the NHS and thereby treatment for all patients for whatever disease or injury is in peril because of those who refuse vaccination then we seem to be in a really unfair situation.

Will we have to suffer continual lockdowns/travel bans and general disruption and just accept it because of some people’s “bodily autonomy”?

Akire · 18/12/2021 16:37

I’m in London feels no different at the moment, nobody I know is sick or friend of a friend sort story lines. I half expect because he’s been seen to do so little over last 2y he’s got his mayor pants on and trying to be seen as doing something for a change. Boris couldn’t care less and carry on chops.

Hopefully just warning all stupid people who end up hammering 999 services out on lash this weekend that no they be way down list of priorities and take some care for change.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 18/12/2021 16:40

Oh I assumed that they had run out of sausage rolls or the cheese and pineapple hedgehog' had rolled off the table at one of the Government parties...

Confused
DeepDeepThought · 18/12/2021 16:43

M&S Christmas Food To Order is now closed! 😯😯😯 Probably all those downing Street parties. Bastards.

I don't know but I'm increasingly pissed off at them. Not helpful probably because you can hardly blame irrational people for their irrationality, but they really do make me very cross (we have one in the family and I'd like to do more straight talking with him but he's impervious - he's not in the UK though so not actually in my face all the time).
DottyHarmer · 18/12/2021 17:14

I just read that the PM of France has announced that further measures will be brought in regarding the unvaxxed in January as their inaction is unfair on the rest of society.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/12/2021 17:15

it means patients cannot be transferred to london, patients can be transferred out of london. afaik,

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/12/2021 17:17

Sadiq Khan took the decision, which allows for closer coordination between different public agencies, after consulting with leaders from NHS London, local authorities and emergency and other essential services, according to a statement.

although i see a poster above has already mentioned the army, i guess you will get fire fights relocated to driving ambulances for instance

KittenCatcher · 18/12/2021 17:18

Does it mean bringing in retired and offduty emergency workers and frontline workers, , discharging fit patients into hotels, reopening the Nightingales, recalling Parliament.

they cant reopen the nightingales - there is no staff

And waving a big magic wand to clone some staff for the Nightingales, yep.
Sunsetsupernova · 18/12/2021 17:20

@Akire I can’t imagine you know many people then. In my circles it feels like we’re the only household without Covid or awaiting a test at the moment

Nothing to do, to be frank, as it seems Omicron evades the vaccines.

If we take bodily autonomy away for the Covid vaccine, what else will they take it away for next?

Give your head a wobble.
