Systematic review confirming that adequate vitamin D level is essential

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33447107/

Meta analysis of vitamin C and covid shows it shortens ICU stays etc..

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33537320/

Just the first two I could find.

hamstersarse · 13/12/2021 21:22

Also vitamin D has been shown to prevent viral infections for years….but most of the covid studies have trialed it when people already have covid

You have to build up your vitamin D levels over time, you can’t do it in a day

ollyollyoxenfree · 13/12/2021 21:22

Why does anything need to be prescribed? Surely it's common sense you take vitamin C and D during a pandemic to make sure your immune system isn't unnecessarily deficient?

As I said, there is no justification in a campaign to encourage people to take these, beyond what is already recommended.

There isn't actually any evidence vitamins are helpful for the general population unless you're deficient - apart from the current vit D guidelines which are already on the NHS website.

LostForIdeas · 13/12/2021 21:23

I’m surprised I found some evidence then @ollyollyoxenfree

AnotherOneWithNoGoodName · 13/12/2021 21:23

@LostForIdeas

What evidence do you have that vitaminD or vitamin C make no difference?
You do realise people can choose to buy vitamin C and D OTCor from amazon if they want to? They are perfectly free to do so if they believe it will help.

I don't have any evidence of anything, I'm not a doctor or scientist. Where is yours?

Oh do share then.

Any idea about how many people are deficient in vitamin D in the U.K.?
If my memory is right it’s about 40%, some of them who will be critically deficient. It also affects more people from asian communities, who already have more issues coping with covid.

But it’s not a good idea to check vitamin D levels and ensure people have the appropriate levels? Ok…..

@LostForIdeas - truely, there is no robust evidence for either vitamin in preventation or treatment for coronavirus

This area is something rife with fradulent research

Vit D (less so for vit C) research has gone the same way as that for ivermectin and HCQ, with many many poor quality, biased or plain fraudalent studies that are being pushed by generally anti-vaccine groups.

AnotherOneWithNoGoodName · 13/12/2021 21:26

@hamstersarse

Immediate therapeutics is just obvious

We of course should be doing that, there are multiple anti virals and therapeutics that could be used immediately on a positive test to stop replication and improve outcomes for the vulnerable

The worship of the vaccine is just odd, especially since the same people say “it was never promised to end this”…..so why are we totally relying on it then?!?!

Because without it we'd still be having deaths in the thousands per day. Vaccines were a serious breakthrough but were never promised to eradicate disease, just to hopefully prevent severe illness and deaths.
Cantspeakpublic · 13/12/2021 21:27

@AnEpisodeOfEastenders

Since I had the vaccination I've had what I can only describe as a hungover feeling, a foggy head, headaches later in the day and tinnitus. I'm in two minds whether to get the booster or just leave things as they are and hope the vaccine eventually leaves my system.
When did you have it? This lasted around 3 weeks for me from the first jab. I actually nearly fatally crashed my car due to my brain fog so the vaccine nearly killed me in a different sort of way! I was very upset after this.

As I said, there is no robust evidence for either vitamin.

Pulling up a pubmed paper of which you've read the title is not equivalent to you finding robust evidence.

hamstersarse · 13/12/2021 21:29

Vitamin D is just an example of things that exist beyond the vaccine hole

There are many things out of that hole which we’ve basically just ignored, in pursuit of a single solution with vaccination

Now it’s becoming clear that the vaccines aren’t going to be the single source of ending this, perhaps people might open their mind to other things we need to be doing

witsendeverytime · 13/12/2021 21:29

I get a flu jab every year and I'd be happy to get a covid jab every year too. Do not understand what the big deal is.

OK, they could start by lifting people out of poverty. Poverty leads to poor nutrition, and general bad health. Obesity and smoking are linked to poverty. If the government truly cared about health, they would focus on that as a priority.
hamstersarse · 13/12/2021 21:34

Vitamin D has been shown to be linked to a good immune response to viruses for decades. The evidence is very clear, even linked to ‘the flu season’ itself by a lot of research

Great, and how many people do you think are deficient without realising it?

SPOILER - a lot.

megustalacerveza · 13/12/2021 21:49

I for one am taking a 'belt and braces' approach - getting every jab I'm offered, vitamin D and C every day, good diet, 20 min walk every lunchtime, high intensity exercise 2-3 times a week. You might as well give yourself the best possible chance.

MondeoFan · 13/12/2021 22:19

I'm a bit apprehensive. At work lots have been off sick after having their booster. They are all in their 20's.
I'm in my 40's and just can't afford to be off sick atm. Working right up to 23rd plus small child at school. Think I'll wait until January

this. Absolutely this
NorthSouthcatlady · 13/12/2021 22:27

I will do, when it’s convenient. I have some job interviews this week / next week and then it’s Christmas -Christmas was crap last year. I don’t want to ruin my birthday in the early part of next year -l had COVID on my birthday last year. I think we should bring back shielding, bored of vaccines and lockdowns.

CatsArePeople · 13/12/2021 22:31

Well i don't and really not amused at a prosect of needing multiple.

elliehamster · 13/12/2021 22:33

You really think we have a choice whether to have a booster or decline? There will be no choice soon. We are being cleverly coerced whilst being given the illusion of choice. If you have noticed world politics, many other countries are ahead of the UK. If you don’t get the latest booster (and god knows how many more boosters are in the pipeline, Israel is on their fourth fo example) then you will be classed as unvaccinated for the purpose of the vaccine pass - no entry to any public place including work. Australia have the army out and about to enforce this. Time to think hard about our government.

CatsArePeople · 13/12/2021 22:36

Time to think hard about our government.

I'm afraid that failing democracies will give birth to some extreme kind of populism unseen before. Anyone who will promise to do away with this shit will be hailed as a savior and then... hell knows.

LifesTooShortYOLO · 13/12/2021 22:49

What strength vitamin d are we supposed to be taking daily?
