Vaccine for 5+

It’s on sky news now. Leaked document stating 5 year olds and above to be vaccinated from spring. I’m so hesitant to get my children done, when I couldn’t wait for mine. Why is this so much harder than it should be? Or am I just overthinking it?

oh no I hoped it wouldn't happen. I won't be getting mine jabbed unless I'm forced into it by them putting restriction on things, holidays ect. even then we will just have to miss out on things until I feel confident there will be no side effects.

DH, teenage DD and I have had it without too much thought tbh, but I'd be a lot more cautious about giving it to my younger primary aged DC. Mainly because it's so new, and younger dc are a low risk for COVID.

I think it will be more difficult to holiday to some destinations in the future if children are not jabbed. Disney Cruises have already announced from February 2022 (I think) that all traveller from 5 years old must be vaccinated to travel.

Mine will have it when he can, my 13 year old already did.

By then other countries will have vaccinated that age group so we will have a lot more data about it

It was to be expected, they announced that they were trialling it months ago.

The thing that puts me off getting children vaccinated is that every vaccine I’ve given them (ie every single recommended childhood jab) was because the risk of the disease (measles, mumps, meningitis etc) is so much worse than any teeny tiny risk from the jab.

The scales are tipped the other way now. There is basically NO risk for my 6 year old if she gets covid. It’s a non-issue. She won’t be hospitalised, or die, or get swelling on the brain. So the risk of the illness DOESNT outweigh the risk of the jab now.

And I’m very pro vaccine! Think just makes me uneasy and I don’t know what we will decide.

No you’re not overthinking it. No way I’d give this vaccine to my 5yr old!! She’s had covid, has natural immunity and I see no benefit at all to her having it, only potential risks.

Fine for their kids to be experimented on.

I didn't say it was fine but they are obviously choosing to give the vaccine to that age group before us.

Given that in the Netherlands the highest rates of cases and transmission are in 4-10 year olds and they're probably the reason for the latest lockdown restrictions and other countries are going down this path I'd certainly expect this country to follow suit.

My 5 year old cruised through covid. However I've known since all this started that my home country would require vaccination for any age group it was available to for entry so I know I will have to sign up the DC as and when it's available. It's just unconscionable that we would never visit my home country again.

Already being given in the US and approved in Canada I believe. They'll be lots of real world safety data by the time it gets approved over here.

I’ll vaccinate if mandatory for traveling. (My son is 3 so not yet) but if they only offer 1 jab like they have done for teenagers then my only reason to vaccinate him won’t make much sense. And I suspect many parents might do the same

And in the meantime, older and vulnerable people all across the world in developing nations who are actually at risk from covid, have not had the opportunity to be vaccinated.

Not "to be vaccinated" but to be offered vaccination.

Why worry about this now. By Spring there will be far more data regarding impact of coronavirus on this age group, as well as efficacy and safety of vaccination.

Wait until then and make an offered decision when/if it's actually an option.

I’m worried that if I don’t and my child gets covid she may have complications, I’d never forgive myself. Hospitalised with a cough a few years ago - well before covid.
Part of me thinks that she’s had covid though, I know she’s been around it in school. I’ve vaccinated her against chicken pox etc, no idea what was in those jabs either.
My husband’s friend is a professor, he was head hunted, knows his stuff, I may ask him for advice.

It does in some ways seem wrong to vaccinate anyone for something, that for most people is just a cold. It has affected two people I know of with no pre existing conditions, one age 21 another 62. Both died, the former in hospital and the latter at home as he refused to go to hospital with breathing difficulties.

Not sure I will get my two vaccinated and I'm extremely pro vaccine normally. They're fully vaccinated, always have the flu spray etc. I have everything offered to me and will snap the booster up.

Both DC have had covid and were totally asymptomatic. The vaccine doesn't stop spread does it? What would the benefit be for them? Genuine question and will read the evidence before making a final decision.

I don't want my 8yo having the vaccine.

Fantastic news! Cannot wait for my 9yr old to be vaccinated. Wish I could get my 3yr old vaccinated too.
