Vaccinations to made a legal requirement in Austria from Feb 2022

Days after Austria imposed a lockdown on the unvaccinated, it has announced a full national Covid-19 lockdown starting on Monday.

Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said it would last at least 10 days and there would be a legal requirement to get vaccinated from 1 February 2022.

Jesus. I'm shocked by that. I'm not an antivaxxer but I still very concerned that a country could make any vaccine a legal requirement! I feel it's a step too far.

I'm very pro-vaccine, even supporting covid passports (up to a point). However this is a step too far, and setting a dangerous precedent in state control.

Sirzy · 19/11/2021 11:16

I am all for vaccines.

I have no issue even with vaccine passports to travel and access certain things.

I have massive issues with the idea of mandatory vaccines simply to live in a country. Yes their should be education and a chance for people to properly discuss their concerns without being judged but if after that someone still say no then that’s their choice

HSHorror · 19/11/2021 11:17

I do think its harsh
However there are a lot of idiots.
Would vaccinate or say
No medical treatment for covid
Or no medical treatment at all (due to risk to other patients or staff)
Or insurance to cover cost of treatment?

The costs to everyone of icu care and ideally i creased facilities for non covid illness.
Eg the nhs dr who died at 45 was in for 9w i think it said.

Phyllobates · 19/11/2021 11:18

@beastlyslumber

For me, the line was crossed ages ago, at the start, with connecting vaccine take up to lockdowns at all. I am completely against people having to have the vaccine in order to be employed, vaccine passports, any of it.

I appreciate that there are lots of arguments on the other side. But if this doesn't cross a line for almost everyone, I think we are truly fucked.

We are truly fucked, and I am astounded by how many people have jumped on this bandwagon.

What benefit is a vaccine passport IF you are travelling while you are infected?

Please explain the logic.

JustFrustrated · 19/11/2021 11:32

I'm not surprised by Austria. Everything I know about the country, including family that lives there (born and raised), shows this isn't that far away from their usual political leanings.

They only made same sex marriage legal 2 years ago....

It's absolutely appalling. I'm fully vaxxed, as are my eligible children, but it's a choice. All medical procedures should be choice. End of.

If it's something like the measles vax, and without it you can use state education that's one thing...but imprisonment for not getting a Vax for an illness that by and large isnt that bad, it's absolutely abhorrent.

sashagabadon · 19/11/2021 11:35

It is tyrannical as a pp suggested and worse it gives fuel to the conspiracy theorists to peddle their argument too.

userperuser · 19/11/2021 11:36

How can anybody be on board with vaccine passports and be shocked by this? It’s what many of us warned for a long time.

Once restriction of freedom is introduced to any degree the possibilities are endless and it doesn’t have to end there once the state are in control.

Bodily autonomy and medical freedom have ended and all in the name of a virus that for the overwhelming majority is mild.

You can be pro certain vaccine/COVID status passport measures and not others

There's a justification (and rationale) for something like the green pass system which allows testing as a alternative for those who don't want to be vaccinated

Again- this is an argument I don't get. There are many restrictions to your freedoms based in public health which haven't led to a dystopian state in the UK.

@OutwiththeOutCrowd

Next step, people will be labelled 'clean' and 'unclean' with the 'unclean' forced to wear a badge indicating their status.
Can people please stop with this antisemitic bull shit? Go take your oppression Olympics somewhere else. I swear some people want to be oppressed so bad they’re jumping the shark with comparisons.
YesNoWhoCares · 19/11/2021 11:42

I'm not surprised, there are a few countries where I wouldn't be surprised and this is one of them

MummyPop00 · 19/11/2021 11:43

Gibraltar, 100% double vaccination rate, is also about to go in to lockdown. Ireland with c. 94% double vaccination rate and mandatory masks is also considering a lockdown.
Begs the question of logic (as well as morality of course) of making the vaccine a legal requirement.

1997again · 19/11/2021 11:45

What will they do to those who refuse?

Where's the antisemitism?

And the justification starts.

I remember on these threads the initial shock at vaccine passports and now the majority are on board.

Drip drip drip.

I posted on another thread about how people would feel if the attention turned to those putting health services at risk through their lifestyle choices?

No diet no passport?

ZeroFsKarma · 19/11/2021 11:47

I wonder what would happen with the vaccine damage payment scheme if (when) this is introduced here. Does anyone know if Austria has similar

I’m wondering what they’ll do about the ones who refuse or can’t have them too. Confused

userperuser · 19/11/2021 11:47

Imprisonment apparently.

ColinTheKoala · 19/11/2021 11:48

Gibraltar, 100% double vaccination rate, is also about to go in to lockdown

yes why are the infection rates so bad in Gibraltar?

AdmiralCain · 19/11/2021 11:50

I'm very worried about what happens if you refuse, will they freeze your assets? Force you to live at home until you run out of food then when you step out snatch you? knock down your door in force? and no I'm not being anti-Semitic, round you up and take you somewhere and impose their dictatorship on your democratic body?

ColinTheKoala · 19/11/2021 11:50

It's what I've said all along. Yes those who aren't vaccinated are more likely to clog up healthcare resources. But so are those who eat too much, drink too much, take drugs, smoke, drive recklessly and you can go on to those who injure themselves ski-ing or running or outdoor swimming or have tooth decay because they don't clean their teeth properly (admittedly you pay for most dentistry but even so). Where does the "fault" end?

Notsandwiches · 19/11/2021 11:50

@workshy44

GOOD Before covid the most infectious disease known to man was measles and you needed 1 in 18 not to be vaccinated for herd immunity. Covid is infinitely more infectious and unless people get vaccinated it will NEVER end. There are some people who can't be vaccinated for medical reasons so they take up the tiny% who don't require vaccination for herd immunity it is beyond selfish. These are unprecedented times- personal freedoms go out the window as far as I am concerned.
It will never end. Accept that. Being vaccinated doesnt stop you getting it nor transmitting it. It apparently "wears off" and you will require boosters every 6 months, not to mention the fact that it will regularly mutate. In what world is that a vaccine...actually, they changed the definition of "vaccine" to accommodate this. What happened to so called "herd immunity?"

BBC are saying the largest number of cases are in junior school kids...what do you think is going to happen next?
