I have to have the vaccine or I loose my job

wingingmumlife · 16/11/2021 22:41

I am absolutely prepared to get flamed for this but I am really worrying.

I am 22 year years old, healthy and unvaccinated (by choice).

I am not anti-vax, I have had every single vaccine from being a child to now and my daughter is up to date with all of hers too.

I work in dentistry and myself and 4 other colleagues have been told we have to be fully vaccinated by April 2022 otherwise, we lose our jobs.

I just can't believe it has come to this. I feel like my human rights have been taken away. I'm not a conspiracy theorist and I am a big believer in science but as a genuine question ... Can someone please tell me why this vaccine is being pushed so much to the point where soon we probably won't be able to even go into a restaurant without having this vaccine?

I have to wear AGP PPE every single day for every single patient but this still isn't enough?

I test myself every single day, but this still isn't enough?

Can someone please help it make sense to me? That is a genuine question.

Im not looking for an argument and I'm not wanting anyone to tell me "how stupid I am" I just want this to make sense.

For anyone wondering why I haven't had the vaccine - the main reason being, I have severe health anxiety, ironic I know since most would think I'd jump for the vaccine, but at the moment I'm more scared of this vaccine then I am of catching Covid itself.

I just feel sick to my stomach at the thought of not having a job unless I have this vaccine, it really doesn't sit well with me but everyone on here seems to be supporting it?

@Kikkomam

My mother is the world's biggest hypochondriac but has never been scared of getting Covid but has found her people in the YouTube conspiracy theories. It's bizarre logic but I guess anxiety isn't logical. I think she feels control by not having the vaccine for some unfathomable reason
With all the respect for your mum, is she a nurse or doctor? If not, i can not blame her as people can be easily brained washed by Youtube conspiracy theories.

But....big BUT.... the OP is a nurse. A nurse! ans we would expect some realism, science-drive, attitude in looking for data, belief in medicine.
So far, around the world, 7 billion doses of covid vaccines have been injected. this is the biggest clinical trial (even if i wouldn't use this word) and a tiny amount of side effect. The majority will be ok with two tablets of paracetamol....

@fabulousathome

I changed to a different dental hygentist when I found out that mine wasn't vaccinated at all.

She was self employed but worked at my regular dentist's surgery.

Going to the dentist is one of the most risky things you can do. The patient can't wear a mask and the worker is very close to them.

It's fine if you don't want to be vaccinated (I don't believe in forcing people) but I can also choose not to go to an unvaccinated person nor to a practice that employs a non-vaccinated person.

I pay a lot of money for these services so I get to choose too.

One of my previous posts (page 5 or 6) went a bit under but the truth is that female dental nurses & hygienists have one of the lowest rates of vaccination in the medical field. This is why the sad story by the CEV poster infected with covid from a dental nurse friend didn't surprise me in the least. Most people would be gobsmacked to know that almost 1/3 in every clinic are not vaccinated. There is a very high chance one of the people breathing near your wide open mouth is not vaccinated. Dentists themselves are almost 100% vaccinated but the uptake amongst nurses/assistants is a huge issue across the board.

Nobody will say it out loud because it's terrible PR for the profession. There's an odd combination of factors in dentistry that makes vaccine uptake more difficult. "Traditional" nurses sign up for the job knowing they work in hospital environments with infectious patients. And of course they are exposed to all the horrors of covid so uptake is very easy. Dental clinics are far more insulated and you don't deal with "sickness" in the the typical medical sense. Everyday life in a clinic is more like working in a hair salon or beauty studio since it's just dealing with appointments, billing, customer service etc. There are no emergencies, rarely overtime, and you get your fixed lunch breaks like most other jobs.

Nearly two years in I still havn't had the virus - along with the other 50 MILLION people in the U.K

You need to check your maths @MauraandLaura. 46m people have been vaccinated. U K population is around 68 million. Then there are the several million children not yet eligible for the vaccine to take into account.

Claudethecat · 17/11/2021 15:12

Oops sorry! I got mixed up there!

nahnahna · 17/11/2021 15:12

Why don't you want the COVID vaccine when you are okay with others ? They don't take long to develop the flu vaccine every year but people regularly take that up ?

Honestly with a virus that kills 100's of thousands of people and gives people long term reduced lung capacity and lowered immune systems to me it's a no brainier to get the vaccine

I fear that your health anxiety is actually endangering you to listening to Misinformation which is making you vulnerable to getting ill.

Wearing Ppe didn't stop thousands of people working in the nhs last year from catching Covid

Wellbythebloodyhell · 17/11/2021 15:14

I do feel sorry for you OP and anyone else facing a similar situation. Vaccine should a choice and nothing something to be forced or coerced Into. I'm double jabbed and will have the booster if I become eligible for it, but that's MY choice to do so. I've said it before I'd rather have an unvaccinated carer/health professional than none at all. I'm not scared of being around unvaccinated people, I trust that the vaccines I've had will protect me from serious illness or death. If others decide they don't want or need the protection vaccines offer that's their choice to make

Heatherjayne1972 · 17/11/2021 15:15

I’m in dentistry op
The hep b vaccine we all have has been around since the 80’s. It’s got long term data to support this
The covid jab hasn’t
I also wear the same ppe as you although I’m double jabbed

What has happened is that the cqc which covers every hospital special care home school prison doctors dentists etc etc have decided that this is the way to go ie everyone jabbed as we see and get very close to a lot of vulnerable patients / clients. The cqc can’t and won’t differentiate between us wearing level 3 ppe all day ( and being as safe as it’s possible to be) and those professionals who don’t need to - care home workers or special school staff who wear level 1 routinely
So it’s everyone or no one

I’m pro vaccine but also pro choice
And I agree that we are the safest ( along with nurses and doctors) and it shouldn’t be forced on us

During the pandemic 3 patients have got Covid from the dentist - 3
Not bad considering there’s over 25,000 dental practices in the U.K.

It's so true what @YouJustFoldItIn said about childbirth being far more invasive..I have anxiety about childbirth and the only way I would probably get through it is telling myself I only need to do it once. Honestly it causes me a lot of anxiety when people tell me I would have a second child cos the thought of doing it twice is almost unbearable.

But a jab is not like childbirth or surgery. I had my jab twice, and will go for a third time. If you have been through childbirth or even surgery, what is a little jab? So many people around you have had their covid jabs and experienced no long term side effects. If you get long covid, you might not be able to work in any job and might be in dire financial straits in the long term

@nc4050

Hi OP, also work in dentistry, and also facing this too. To those who are saying we had to have hep b, yes we did, we signed our contracts and went in knowing we had to have hep b as part of our role. We did not go in and sign a contract that says if there is a pandemic we must take a vaccine that is still under clinical trials. I am also not an anti vaxer and have been very ill with covid and still facing the after effects which is why I am not ready for vaccine yet. A family member who was also very ill with covid had a very severe reaction to vaccine, it was like an overload to system. I would also like to choose the type of vaccine I have and would like to wait for novavax to hopefully get the go ahead here. We take more tests than anybody, wear more PPE than anybody. Many of our patients are unvaxxed, yet we still treat them. Before covid I read about tamiflu Vaccine and what that did to many NHS workers who were basically guinea pigs for it but nobody really talks about it. I don't have any advice for you other than don't leave, make sure you're dismissed as it could b possible that in the future when full data is available there may be a bit of a U-turn with this.
Tamiflu isn’t a vaccine. The Covid vaccines were not experimental or under clinical trial for your adults when they were authorized for use. But instead you’re wanting Novavax which is still being approved?

Ok…

*For adults

kimsbb · 17/11/2021 15:32

@Arabelladrinkstea
totally agreed. I'm not anti vaccines, I've always had them in the past, but this time I've decided to wait and I'm glad I did.

I was waiting for Valneva, VLA2001 which is a traditional dead virus vaccine, but it was rejected at the last minute. Can't have the French company producing in Scotland!

I'll continue to wait....

Unmerited · 17/11/2021 15:34

The problem we have is relying on the intelligence and / or willingness of people to do things for the greater good vs themselves. The same issue applies for environmental issues.

So for the people worrying this (vaccines) will be ‘forever’ you’re probably fine, we’ll be under water or up in flames by then anyway. It would be great to have a few years without Covid in the meantime but, yeah, human rights, personal choice etc

I spent hours researching into x-ray risks and possible side effects until finally I had an x-ray but then suffered with depression after because I though that the x-ray was going to kill me

Doesn’t sound like you’re in an appropriate job anyway, so just get your CV out there and find a job where you don’t need reason, or rational thinking.

Staryflight445 · 17/11/2021 16:06

‘ One last thing too, for those who are so narrow minded about health anxiety, I really hope it something you never have to suffer with.’

I don’t think people are being?
I’m not narrow minded about health anxiety but I don’t think when it’s this bad it’s appropriate to be working in healthcare.

I can understand health anxiety that seems irrational to other people.

I turned down a research job working on prions (the crazy proteins that cause BSE and other nasty neurodegen disorders) because I knew I couldn't handle the anxiety & paranoia that it would cause me to have.

I have a friend who lost her mum to sporadic CJD, and would not even handle the urn her ashes were in as she read even high temperatures don't destroy prions.

MzHz · 17/11/2021 16:14

My teen ds caught covid a few weeks back , from his best friend. they were pretty ill actually.

Mate's mum caught it too, double vaccinated, super careful, etc etc - she too was pretty bloody ill with it.

My ds said that he would never put anyone he cared about in a setting where there were unvaccinated people caring for them. ditto doctor, dentist whoever. He's 16. He'll get his jab soon as he has to wait until 28 days clear. Actually his mate had been given his vaccine the week before he got covid.

All 3 of them are still recovering, it hit them all very hard. I do not want to get it. I know a friend who has long covid and that is one of my greatest fears.

It's none of my business, none of anyone's business what you do with your health or your body @wingingmumlife. I take responsibility for my health, my safety, the risks I take are within my tolerances.

I choose NOT to be treated by, be attended by in close proximity with someone at a much greater risk of passing on something that - even double or triple jabbed - i could catch, and be ill with. It's my body, my health, my family, and my money. I won't be spending my money on any close personal service where that service is given by someone who is not vaccinated.

You had all the other jabs, hepatitis, tetanus etc, how did you reconcile that decision vs this decision with Covid? Covid that is every fucking where at the moment...?

StormTreader · 17/11/2021 16:15

I wonder if all the people currently saying "I'm not getting vaccinated because the risk to me if I get it is small" will feel the same in 20/30/40 years time when suddenly they ARE in that high-risk age-group and are being advised to stay home in self-imposed lockdown because all the young people out in the world are happily skipping about, unvaccinated?

MzHz · 17/11/2021 16:17

During the pandemic 3 patients have got Covid from the dentist - 3

That was possibly because most practices were closed during the lockdowns...

@ollyollyoxenfree I think that’s fair enough. But working in a dental surgery where patients are routinely x-rayed, when you believe that x-rays KILL people is a bizarre and stressful way to live
