because there are effective measures and alternative ways of doing things that could make a difference in the "difficult winter ahead"

But these measures are no longer "keeping cases low" and "suppressing / slowing down the spread" - they are "making sure everyone who gets infected ends up with a mild or asymptomatic case".

The most effective measure we can deploy now is to offer boosters to CEVs and older age groups. The problem is JCVI is very, very conservative and will not make a decision without additional data. However, I personally feel benefits of boosters for high risk groups significantly outweigh potential risks (unless there is additional information not currently in the public domain).

TheSunIsStillShining · 30/08/2021 13:38

It will also be interesting that when they decide to go for boosters how they will do it. By then we might actually have some data, as some countries are going for like for like, whilst others are going for not-the-one-you-had approach.

(OK I’ll admit defeat on the maths front today, thanks all!)

Bizawit · 30/08/2021 14:42

but are stepping down their use a bit for the autumn term

Because of the estimated benefits at this stage of the pandemic , versus the trade offs (and not just financial trade offs). You may not agree with the decisions that have been made , but you must acknowledge there is a debate to be had, cost/ benefit calculation to be made.. it’s not the simple logic puzzle you are trying to present.

TheSunIsStillShining · 30/08/2021 14:53

@Bizawit
fair enough, but ...
just hypothetically, there are measures which are very lost and have impact in school settings

  1. masks all the time for all
  2. morning/afternoon split of classes/yeargroups. Obviously this can only be done either with bigger kids, or after careful planning. But I would argue that if any thought had went into this some time ago, this could be on a list of measures.
  3. proof of vaccines for those eligible in order to go back (yes, I know this is fascist, whatever and I'm the devil.)

I wonder what happened to the collected quick spit test that was trialed in us (calif?) almost a year ago...?
or with the sniffing dogs? That sounded really promising. I wonder how long it took to train a dog.

I'm sure that people who are more knowledgeable have come up with more to go on the list.

I still am baffled by this black and white attitude: lockdown or no restrictions. It's totally bonkers. This type of "Live with it" mentality is reminiscent of the middle ages. At least then they didn't really know better....

Wakeupin2022 · 30/08/2021 14:58

Scotland looking a lot better today!

3893 cases and 0 deaths. I know it might be lower due to weekend but after yesterday's artificial high its heartening.

Also its not a Bank Holiday in Scotland today so I wouldn't expect that to impact any reporting this week.

JanglyBeads · 30/08/2021 15:02

Gosh that’s an enormous fall for Scotland! Suspiciously so?

Saw an article earlier on the sniffer dogs, didn’t read it I’m afraid.

The spit (LAMP) tests were being trialled by Southampton University Hopsitals (iirc) and the last I heard there’d been a holdup because of a shortage of something. I think you can get the tests privately.

Perihelion · 30/08/2021 15:20

Scotland is still in backlog world, where a large proportion of tests were processed more than 48 hours ago.
By specimen date,
Thurs 26th 7187, still being added to today.
Thurs 19th 3709

Based on the recent research from Wales:

Staff face covering was not associated with a lower odds of school COVID-19 cases...

I was thinking od school/mass corporation usage, not personal.

I'm very doubtful of the quality of the debate being had at the D of E - more like what is the least we can get away with? that won't cost anything? or make the Telegraph criticise us? let's roll with it, it's only state school pupils anyhow, get them in the schools, then the plebs can get back in their offices...
herecomesthsun · 30/08/2021 15:31

sorry, just noticed this was the data thread

Perihelion · 30/08/2021 15:35

And anecdotally, in DD's high school in Edinburgh last Autumn, there were a total of 4 positive cases, up to Christmas.
Just received a " Warn and Inform" email, saying there are cases in every year apart from S6.

Piggywaspushed · 30/08/2021 15:35

WHO and Unicef have soem thoughts about schools. they do not say 'just get them all back in, regardless', however. The second bit of the headline is as important as the first.

Thanks for sharing @Perihelion. I was looking for this info earlier.

Do you know where I can find an actual list of cases by week or do we just have to work it out using the graph of daily figures on the public health website?
