46,000 new cases....the last time we had cases that high we had 1500 a day dying

Frazzled2207 · 20/07/2021 16:33

it is very sad and worrying. However the highest deaths of the week are always reported on a tuesday due to weekend lag. That doesn't make it any less sad but it's very likely that numbers will be lower the next few days.

Government has been shambolic re covid the whole time.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 20/07/2021 16:33

Are the numbers of deaths rising ? : YES

Is that the best time to open up ? : NO

Fairyliz · 20/07/2021 16:34

Surely this must mean the vaccine isn’t working!!!
On July 19th 2020 no one had been vaccinated and less people had had Covid so no natural immunity. Yet the deaths then were on 26. Still awful but not as bad.
So does the vaccine work or do we just have to take our chance?

PickleAF · 20/07/2021 16:34

I don't understand this idea people have that Boris alone is making all of these decisions off the top of his head? Confused he's advised by panels of scientists and advisors and the hundreds of people work on providing the data that goes into these decisions. Yes people have died with (not always of!) covid, but the last time cases were this high thousands were dying.

User5827372728 · 20/07/2021 16:35

Half are probably from heat stoke

Homeontherangeuk · 20/07/2021 16:36

PickleAF, he's not listening to the scientists...

@Myplantsare

We will know in 2 weeks as takes about that long from testing positive to getting seriously ill

Ditto

Fairyliz - The vaccine will not give everyone 100% immunity, but for those people who have been double jabbed the chance of being hospitalised with covid is a lot lower. Also I think the vaccine is less effective with the Delta variant.

Saisong · 20/07/2021 16:41

But some of these today are 'historical' if you look at actual date of death the highest day so far in this wave was 45 on the 9th July, which is less alarming.

(Not trying to minimise the tragedy for those that have died)

There was substantially less mixing this time last year. Schools had been closed for months, official shielding was still in place, everyone who could WFH was WFH, there were no spectators at sporting events and the majority of people were still behaving very cautiously. It's not exactly like-for-like.

122 scientists warning him @pickleAF but he knows better!

Fairyliz 60% of those that are dying have not been vaccinated. The 40% that have could possibly be those vulnerable/old etc

Could you please provide us with an option that doesn't include an exit wave over the winter, doesn't ruin our economy and mental health further?

Whitty has already said this wave is baked in regardless of when we open. It's either get it out the way now or spread it over months. The NHS is very unlikely to be overwhelmed if we do it now so there is no sense I delaying.

Ermmmmm, what was the number of cases on July 19th 2020? Confused

The vaccine helps a lot (against death) but (a) it is not perfect and (b) a lot of people still aren’t double vaccinated.
EvilPea · 20/07/2021 16:48

It is, but a large proportion are still not fully vaccinated. It’s also not 100%.
If it didn’t work at all the numbers would be sky high.

wintertravel1980 · 20/07/2021 16:49

The quote from Jonathan Van Tam, the deputy Chief Medical Officer for England:

“Nothing reduces the risks to zero other than standing in a meadow completely on your own ad infinitum with nobody coming within three metres of you".

Whether we like it or not, we cannot stand alone in a meadow (i.e. lock down / live with significant restrictions) ad infitum.

Egghead68 · 20/07/2021 16:49

And p.s. cases were artificially low last July as we had recently come out of a lockdown.

Whether it's a Tuesday lag or not - it's still the highest since the end of March - even taking into account all other Tuesdays
FakeColinCaterpillar · 20/07/2021 16:51

My local hospital is full of people who haven’t been vaccinated, refused the second dose because they have been scared of side effects or have been unable to get it (the ICU doctor writes a weekly update).
I think the vaccine is working, not getting everyone who can get it to take it is the failure.

Egghead68 · 20/07/2021 16:52

Well one way that would avoid an exit wave would be to get herd immunity (for now at least) through vaccination before opening up. Israel did not have an exit wave. It’s not inevitable.

that’s not artificially low, that’s genuinely low and evidence the lockdown worked
