@Flowerlane

We can not stay locked down forever. We need to get back to some kind of ‘normal’.

Scientists are only looking at what covid is doing they are not looking at what impact keeping everything closed is doing in regards to the economy and peoples mental health etc.

Yes cases have risen but that was always expected. The number of deaths have decreased when you look at the larger picture.

They should stop releasing the numbers now. No other illness such as cancer or the flu etc release daily numbers of deaths.

Agree so much with this!

You'll get someone come along in a moment and remind you that cancer isnt contagious and "you dont seriously still think that covid is like flu" though.

Cornettoninja · 20/07/2021 17:12

@gillysSong to be honest it doesn’t really matter what’s on the death certificate. Too many people were ill and dying at the same time for our hospitals and infrastructure to cope with. Whatever that number is and whatever was causing it wasn’t manageable.

name6785 · 20/07/2021 17:13

And 300-400 people were dying a day in the flu peak a couple of years ago.

Deaths will rise, we can't prevent all deaths. Are you monitoring all other deaths closely?

whatthejiggeries · 20/07/2021 17:13

Seriously you need to chill

Flowerlane · 20/07/2021 17:13

@siestalady lol yep I’m waiting..tin hat at the readyGrin

Jaxhog · 20/07/2021 17:15

I still think we're heading for carnage.

When people talk about the vaccine, they forget that it is not 100% effective. Even at 95% effective, that still means a lot of people will catch it and die. Since less than 55% of people are fully vaccinated, that increases the numbers still further.

As things stand at the moment, we may be able to go places (in the UK) and to work, but as the numbers grow, more and more people will be isolating or in hospital. The effect of this 'random' impact on our economy may well be worse than having a partial and controlled lockdown.

foxandbee · 20/07/2021 17:16

@Fairyliz

Surely this must mean the vaccine isn’t working!!! On July 19th 2020 no one had been vaccinated and less people had had Covid so no natural immunity. Yet the deaths then were on 26. Still awful but not as bad. So does the vaccine work or do we just have to take our chance?
"Fewer" as Stannis Baratheon once said to the Onion Knight.
wintertravel1980 · 20/07/2021 17:16

Scientists all over the world are tearing his decision apart because IT MAKES NO SENSE.

Some scientists. Primarily the zero Covid crowd.

Both Chris Whitty and JVT (whose opinions many people including me value very highly) supported the re-opening now (rather than later).

TooHotForUs · 20/07/2021 17:17

Do we know the ages of those who have died do they still release that info ?

vera99 · 20/07/2021 17:19

The vaccines are far from perfect and are being expected to do a lot of heavy lifting.

When was this? How long did it last for, as I don't remember those sort of figures! If you mean during the Spanish Flu, that was 100 years ago.

mumwon · 20/07/2021 17:19

The profs get saying things like " wear a mask in crowded places, watch out for unventilated rooms, etc etc" what they can't say is "Boris is an ignorant prat who has ignored our advice on wearing masks & distancing" they would get sacked & wouldn't be able to advise when things go wrong - so they grit their teeth etc etc
its hardly surprising numbers have gone up - due to: massive sports & attached pub events, & more people mixing. Younger people are getting this because of (sports & social events & mixing) & many are not yet fully vaccinated - those who are tend to get milder cases but those who are not are at risk (to whatever degree from background, work situation, exposure level, health & physical fitness level & random other conditions which they never realized they had) of possibly more severe forms which may lead on to hospitalisation etc
Older people -in general (not all, being a daft bat doesn't preclude age) tend to be a bit more cautious, from my observation, particularly those who are more vulnerable. Hence, at the moment (!) less older people are going in than in previous outbreaks.
This could/may well change

Blessex · 20/07/2021 17:21

Look. For all those who want to live a life locked down and masked then please go ahead. For the rest of us who have done this for 18 months and are now double jabbed, we are through with it. My parents want to spend their last few years playing with their grandchildren. Young adults want to find their soulmates and party. Kids need education and social skills. Everyone needs company and hugs. Covid is shit yes. But now we are vaccinated there is little else we can do. Cases will rise and will keep rising. But this virus is here to stay. So those who want to live a life of lockdown then carry on. For those who want to start living again in what is already a short life - then please let them.

name6785 · 20/07/2021 17:21

I still think we're heading for carnage

Unfortunately there is a deadly virus out there and people will die, just as they do of flu every year, and lots of other diseases we could mitigate against if we banned travel, confined people to their houses and controlled what they ate. There comes a point where you have to accept we are human, we are vulnerable, we will all die of something eventually. We've spent the last 18 months trying to reduce that figure, at great economic and social cost, and now we have a vaccine that has dramatically reduced death and serious illness, so now we need to be pragmatic and realistic. The goal was never to eradicate Covid.

Blessex · 20/07/2021 17:23

And that’s not even to begin to talk about all those dying from things other than ‘covid’

name6785 · 20/07/2021 17:24

When was this? How long did it last for, as I don't remember those sort of figures! If you mean during the Spanish Flu, that was 100 years ago.

2017-2018 there were 50,000 excess deaths that winter www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/bulletins/excesswintermortalityinenglandandwales/2017to2018provisionaland2016to2017final

You don't remember it because it wasn't widely reported and discussed, it happens, it's life.

DuckAndPancakes · 20/07/2021 17:26

The last time we had that amount of deaths recorded, or there abouts, was in March on a day where we recorded ~5,000 new cases.

Yeh, I am sure this is all going to go swimmingly.

herecomesthsun · 20/07/2021 17:27

The deaths don't pertain to the number of cases today. You need to go 3 weeks back. 96 deaths, from about 22k cases/day 3 weeks ago. If we get to 200k cases/day, there will be of course more deaths.

Expect revision of the plans as we go.

Blessex · 20/07/2021 17:28

The government have ZERO and I mean ZERO chance of dictating another lockdown. The majority of people just won’t entertain it now we have the vaccines.

They are doing heavy lifting. There will still be a significant number of deaths and we still need masks etc.

Apples and oranges
Comedycook · 20/07/2021 17:29

I'm generally very unbothered by covid. But that seems like quite a high figure and is quite concerning

BIWI · 20/07/2021 17:30

And yet, @Flowerlane, stock markets are tumbling around the world because of the rise of cases.

So opening up, allowing mixing - all of which encourage the virus to spread, is not helping the economy. It's having quite the opposite effect.

TableFlowerss · 20/07/2021 17:30

@brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Are the numbers of deaths rising ? : YES

Is that the best time to open up ? : NO

Will the number of deaths ever be zero? NO

On average I believe that it is about 12 days from positive test to death. So those dying at the moment were diagnosed around the 8th July. No of cases then was about 35k.

The last time we had about 35k cases was about 23rd January. 12 days after that is 4th Feb. Deaths on 4th Feb - 915! And 4th Feb was a Thursday so no “false Tuesday high”.
