The mask police are out in full force. It saddens me what society has become Sad

I know. It's so predictable. Wear a mask = kind, compassionate, still saving the NHS. Don't wear a mask = selfish granny (it's never grandad) killer.

I'm exempt and was going to do away with my lanyard on the 19th. Not sure I will now, for fear of (still) being labelled a selfish mask refuser.

TreaslakeandBack · 04/07/2021 17:34

Mask wearing is one of the easiest mitigations though surely?
I want life back to normal as much as anyone but would much rather wear a mask on public transport and in shops than have my social life and other freedoms curtailed any longer.
If we have to strike a middle ground then mask wearing should stay rather than say self isolation for (distant) contacts.

If you’re exempt then you won’t have to wear one?

smallandimperfectlyformed · 04/07/2021 17:34

It's really annoying just how much these things have been portrayed as the saviour of us all. I wear one in shops and on public transport because they are mandatory but I do hate them and am looking forward to being able to get in a shop without wearing one.

This is such a weird thing to be sad about. They are advocating wearing a piece of material over your mouth in public places not kicking puppies?
BlackeyedSusan · 04/07/2021 17:36

I'd rather wear masks than have school closures or closing hospitality.

Thelm · 04/07/2021 17:38

Is it not more that they are trying to persuade people who can wear a mask to continue doing so rather than having a go at those who can’t wear a mask?

I’m undecided at the minute about whether I will continue to wear a mask. On the one hand, they make my asthma much worse but then I feel safer with one on.

nether · 04/07/2021 17:39

Masks protect the community, not the individual.

So those who are CEV or CV are unlikely to welcome this. It makes the world narrower fir the most vulnerable.

So ethi g we're all just one new diagnosis away from.

If a mark of humaneness of a society is how it treats its weakest, then this shows how uncaring Britain can be.

bumbleymummy · 04/07/2021 17:39

It’s probably just a stroppy minority being vocal (as is usually the case with these things) . The silent majority will just quietly stop wearing masks and that will be that.

TheVampiresWife · 04/07/2021 17:40

@Aloethere it's sad because those who don't want to wear a mask, or those who can't, will be vilified after the 19th. Exempt people have had it for a year and there was the hope that when the mask mandate ended, so would the judgement and abuse. Unfortunately it looks as if that won't be the case.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 04/07/2021 17:43

Do they work though? Really? What would the material difference been in the death rates if we’d not been wearing crumpled up bits of tatty fabric that have been shoved in coat pockets and gathering fluff in handbags all winter?

I’m sceptical honestly

MedSchoolRat · 04/07/2021 17:45

It isn't ... trust me, of this I know. Many people hate masking. No public health intervention is a good one when many people struggle to do it. Face covers aren't enormously protective, anyway.

TheVampiresWife · 04/07/2021 17:45

It's sanctimonious comments like this that are precisely the issue - not wearing a mask = uncaring. And not all of us who are CV want you to be our saviours, thanks. Some CV people will miss the reassurance of seeing others in masks; some will be as pleased as punch that normality is returning. And we're not all 'weak', either, ta.

nether · 04/07/2021 17:49

I know that not all are weak, other than their comorbidity making then extra vulnerable.

That's pretty much how I would describe theCEV person in my household, who has a condition which means the immunisations probably won't work.

We are living under the precautionary post-shield advice anyhow. But if there are no masks indoors then that rules out a lot of places - places that current advice recommends we don't frequent right now, and look as if it will be riskier to visit in future.

There really is no end in sight for us, and millions like us

Imnothereforthedrama · 04/07/2021 17:50

Good for them no fucks given anymore. The day we are told it’s voluntary I’ll not wear one unless I’m asked to such as maybe doctors / close contact etc. I can’t get upset over a # .

elenacampana · 04/07/2021 17:52

I’ll be ditching the mask at the earliest available opportunity!

We don’t need to strike a middle ground. They will no longer be mandatory but feel free to continue wearing one if you wish. Just don’t expect everyone else to.

I really can't see how they can work at all. Covid is a lot stronger than a piece of cloth stuck over your face. Unless we are all wearing single use high grade masks and never touching them then I think they are really just covers to make us think we are doing something. Not sure how some material stuck in your back pocket which you stick on when required can really be doing much. I don't have a problem with people wearing them or not wearing them. I just know that the minute we don't have to wear them I won't be.
bullyingadvice2017 · 04/07/2021 17:58

Can't wait to ditch them.

luckylavender · 04/07/2021 18:02

@TheVampiresWife - it was Hancock who introduced granny killing as I remember. Not a mere considerate member of society mask wearer Wink

luckylavender · 04/07/2021 18:04

@Allmyarseandpeggymartin - no idea what your masks look like. Mine look nothing like that.

megletthesecond · 04/07/2021 18:04

It saddens me that some people have a problem with masks. Wearing a mask doesn't affect me at all and helps a tiny bit.

Unless of course you fancy looking after my children if I get ill? Then ill crack on without one.

Cheshirewife · 04/07/2021 18:05

I will continue to wear a mask, as no doubt will ever other sensible, educated, considerate person who isn’t (genuinely) medically exempt.

Will no doubt be a helpful indicator of who the (unmasked) a**holes are.

grey12 · 04/07/2021 18:06

It would be important to learn from this Covid situation that wearing a mask saves lives.

If you have a cold, are coughing, sneezing.... WEAR A MASK! You don't know who you can be affecting. You can give it to someone who takes care of a vulnerable person

If you have the flu or a temperature, don't go to work/school. Simple

I've been so looking forward to not wearing my lanyard and being able to see all of people's faces and it looks like there's still going to be people who treat me like a leper.

*for those that don't realise what it's like having sensory processing issues on top of ASD. Even the lanyard can send me into overload, but it's the lesser of the 2 evils and I can cope with it longer than a mask. Everyone around me wearing masks means that I'm even less able to work out the meaning behind what people are saying, I struggle even more with looking at the person talking to me (because I'm forced to look in the eyes) and struggle to separate the voice talking to me from surrounding noise (especially in noisy/crowded places).
For some people wearing masks is a big issue as is people around them wearing them

What a bizarre comment.
