I’m no fan of either of them but I don’t think Boris has anything more to lose. He may as well just come out and declare that Cumming is a two faced c*nt

Egeegogxmv · 16/06/2021 23:58

Two-faced you say👀
I reckon he's got a lot more faces than that😶

longwayoff · 17/06/2021 06:32

What's happened to the Official Secrets Act? I remember signing it as part of employment terms when I was about 18 and am still legally obliged to keep things to myself, donkey's years later. Which is fine, as it was just for a low level clerical thing, so I have no secrets to hold but it is/was? Intended to keep secret everything from the biscuits for a meeting about wallpaper to the latest defence and security information. Penalties for breaking it were harsh. What's going on?

Johnsons involvement with Cummings goes back years, helped BJ win the Brexit vote & become tory party leader/PM/win the GE.

Cummings was also Goves advisor.

Also ALL the govt supported Cummings & other ministers did similar to what Cummings did

Boris has plenty more to lose, Cummings has loads more, eventually some of it will stick.

What i find most disappointing is that policy was being made up via Whatsapp - i use it to arrange a night out.

The Official secrets act doesn't exist, went in 2001.
MarshaBradyo · 17/06/2021 07:34

Isn’t it being reviewed currently?

The Official Secrets Act 1989 is the main statute protecting these categories of official information.

In addition, there are a number of miscellaneous unauthorised disclosure offences on the statute book.

The project
In 2015 the Cabinet Office, on behalf of the government, asked the Law Commission to review the effectiveness of the laws that protect Government information from unauthorised disclosure.

The Law Commission published a consultation paper on 2 February 2017 which suggested ways to improve the law that protects official information.

The open public consultation on the protection of official data ran until 3 May 2017.

We published a final report with recommendations for change on 1 September 2020.

Bluethrough · 17/06/2021 07:50

@MarshaBradyo Apologies, you are correct, didn't check the country where it was replaced.

But is Dominic sharing Official Information?

MarshaBradyo · 17/06/2021 08:11

Not sure I think someone would have to read the act

But I am interested in how he did this and not go through committee

longwayoff · 17/06/2021 09:26

Thank you both, so that's where it went. It was pretty all-embracing. I'm evidently free to tell all. But there's nothing to tell.

the80sweregreat · 17/06/2021 09:37

I remember signing the official secrets act in the 80s Was the lowest paid admin person there!
Made me feel a bit important for a few minutes.
I guess all this evidence is just for the committee to back up his accusations from last month?

nancy75 · 17/06/2021 09:54

He must have signed some kind of non disclosure agreement, but what are the penalties for breaking those?
I guess if you’ve got enough dirt on enough people you can get away with anything

Not necessarily.

Remember here is a guy who spent 4 years in Russia, something that pre 1989 would have ensured you went no-where nr Govt.

But lets not shoot the messenger, if he is exposing incompetence or lying (to us) at the heart of Government, surely that is a good thing?

nancy75 · 17/06/2021 12:34

Oh, I don’t want him silenced! I want to hear every single word of it.

RedToothBrush · 17/06/2021 13:56

The worst thing is I said when he was sacked he'd have a tantrum and start trying to dish the dirt to get revenge and satisfy his ego.

And look what he's doing.

It was predictable and for that reason none of it will stick. If anything he's secured Hancock's position because if Johnson sacks him now he looks terrible. Basically Cummings just painted Johnson into a corner to be nice to Hancock and thats all thats really happened!

Cos politics.

Depends on what else he has...... eventually, once CV stops being the story, some of this will stick.
the80sweregreat · 17/06/2021 14:50

I don't often go on Twitter , but Emma Kennedy made me laugh today : she tweeted
' I hope that Dominic Cummings doesn't have nudes!'
The replies were funny.
Twitter can be savage.

RedToothBrush · 17/06/2021 17:30

Jasjas by then the news will have moved on and Cummings will have become the pantomime baddie as a footnote of the 20tweens and 2020.

You over estimate how much people care and under estimate how quickly people forget.

Remember that Aaron Banks fella?

jasjas1973 · 17/06/2021 17:44

Of course, if all he has is some bad tempered whatsapp messages, then the media will excuse it, as both Sky and BBC have done - "it was a highly stressful time, understandable BJ lost his rag" and the public will just see it as another example of how BJ is "just like one of us"

Don't know! part of me thinks nothing would make the public think badly of BJ and you are correct.

Walkaround · 17/06/2021 18:02

I loathe Boris Johnson, but I loathe Dominic Cummings more, and DC has not said anything I didn’t already think about BJ, so his behaviour now so far as I’m concerned is merely a demonstration of what an odious human being DC is and it says nothing new about BJ.

Walkaround · 17/06/2021 18:37

As for Cummings’s ideas on what needs reforming and how - if they had any legitimacy whatsoever, he’s tainted those too by showing that he has no idea how to achieve anything positive, only how to set groups of people against each other and poison all discourse.

Even if 100% true, it just comes across as the rantings of a bitter former employee. Whose fairy story about the trip to Barnard Castle led to a lot of non-adherence to Covid restrictions.

Totally agree. He appears to be an extremely bitter, unpleasant and untrustworthy man.

Who's fairy story was supported by the PM and the cabinet.
