Why are people still accepting AZ? Will it be stopped?

DH went for his Covid vaccine today. (Under 40 so he got Moderna)

The queue at the vaccine centre was enormous.
The attended in the car park told us they were running behind on appointments and the queue was for second doses.

Dh got chatting to the guy that did his vaccine, he told him that in their vaccination centre they were using moderna for first doses and AZ were all for second.

It’s really surprised me that there’s such a huge uptake of AZ given the risk associated.
I thought by now it would have been stopped.

Are people still happily accepting it?

Confused There isn't a huge risk associated with AZ. Yes I had mine recently, very happy to get it.

PetuniaPot · 30/05/2021 17:50

If you have had one dose already it makes sense to have the second imo.

Thelm · 30/05/2021 17:51

What huge risk? You’re probably at a higher risk driving to the appointment.

umberellaonesie · 30/05/2021 17:52

Are people still taking the contraceptive pill, getting pregnant? Why haven't they stopped? Why are they allowing it? Why are people accepting the risk!

MadMadMadamMim · 30/05/2021 17:52

Bizarre. I've had two doses of it and no problems. The risks are absolutely minuscule.

Why on earth would they stop it?

Notashandyta · 30/05/2021 17:52

Can't wait for my second dose

PinkDaffodil2 · 30/05/2021 17:52

It seems very sensible that they’re using AZ for second doses, as we don’t know about the safety of mixing and matching and some suggestions it’s more dangerous so currently we’re not allowed to mix.
Having AZ as a second is much lower risk than not having a second, so no I’m not at all surprised people are accepting it.

Rillington · 30/05/2021 17:53

There's a miniscule risk. I had my two AstraZeneca vaccines without hesitation.

I didn’t suggest there was a huge risk, I said I was surprised with the huge uptake given the risk associated. 😌

People view the facts and make informed judgements on the levels of risk.

Why would it be stopped?

ZNation · 30/05/2021 17:54

Probably because people don't have any other options if they already have had AZ for 1st jab other than not have 2nd jab.

Iggi999 · 30/05/2021 17:54

I have concerns about possible side effects but I will still be happy to get my second vaccine. I didn't get a choice over what the first one would be - if I don't want the second AZ I would get nothing.

applesandoranges221 · 30/05/2021 17:54

Having my second dose on Friday of AZ.

Can’t wait!

Pagwatch · 30/05/2021 17:55

But risk assessment involves figuring out how big the risk is. So if the risk is small why are you surprised at people still having it?

What do you mean

Cos most people are intelligent enough to realise the risk is minuscule and that there are risks with everything, including the other vaccines but the papers don’t scream about those.
Bitzyboo · 30/05/2021 17:55

@umberellaonesie

Perhaps because the mortality rate for those specific clots is much lower than the that for the clots with AZ.

trevthecat · 30/05/2021 17:56

But they were second doses? So they were all fine with the first. That's where the risk is higher. Not one blood clot has been connected to a second dose of AZ. Also you have to have 2 of the same vaccine.

TheBobJog · 30/05/2021 17:56

It's a tiny risk, why on earth would it be 'stopped'?

User629202 · 30/05/2021 17:56

Yup, happily accepted my second dose of the AZ vaccine at the ripe old age of 33 because I understand how tiny the risk is, and how much greater the risk of Covid is. Total no-brained to have it.

FuzzyPuffling · 30/05/2021 17:57

There's a teeny tiny risk. I was very happy to have double AZ vaccinations.

There's a risk of anaphylactic shock or heart issues with Pfizer. Again tiny. (But less well publicised)

Bitzyboo · 30/05/2021 17:58

@trevthecat

It seems like a lot of people believe this. There’s actually 17 cases associated with the second dose.

I was really grateful to receive my second dose of AZ. I'm not ECV but have had pneumonia twice, it's no joke struggling to breathe, feeling absolutely awful, not having the energy to shower/eat - if Covid is anything similar, I don't want it.

Bitzyboo · 30/05/2021 17:58

@TheBobJog

Well I just thought since they don’t really know why the clots happen or who is at risk, it would be stopped until they know more.

Why are people still accepting AZ?

because for most people this is a safe and effective vaccine.
yabu for starting a scaremongering antivaxx thread

Mindymomo · 30/05/2021 17:59

Millions have had it, all my family, neighbours and friends have had it. Lives have been saved, that’s why people continue to have it. There are side effects with all medication unfortunately, but I am extremely grateful to have received the Astra Zeneca vaccination.
