Why are people still accepting AZ? Will it be stopped?

DH went for his Covid vaccine today. (Under 40 so he got Moderna)

The queue at the vaccine centre was enormous.
The attended in the car park told us they were running behind on appointments and the queue was for second doses.

Dh got chatting to the guy that did his vaccine, he told him that in their vaccination centre they were using moderna for first doses and AZ were all for second.

It’s really surprised me that there’s such a huge uptake of AZ given the risk associated.
I thought by now it would have been stopped.

Are people still happily accepting it?

I feel so priviledged to have had two doses of Astra Zeneca.

trevthecat · 30/05/2021 18:00

Can you find me this information then because I can't find it and the pharmacist I was working with, whilst I was vaccinating people with az was under the impression that there hasn't been.

alexdgr8 · 30/05/2021 18:00

@umberellaonesie

Are people still taking the contraceptive pill, getting pregnant? Why haven't they stopped? Why are they allowing it? Why are people accepting the risk!
and what about paracetamol, aspirin, ibuprofen; have you actually read the side -effects on the information leaflet ? shocking. why are people still taking them. must be those sheeple again.
Parker231 · 30/05/2021 18:01

I’ve been giving AZ vaccines this weekend. It’s been busy. I’ve also had AZ for my vaccination.

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 30/05/2021 18:01

I would have accepted it.

Same as I got pregnant despite the risk of dying in childbirth being greater. Or getting in a car despite the risk of dying in a car accident being greater.

I hope they don’t stop it otherwise we will never get out of this fucking covid mess. I’m not prepared to be locked down for another year.

CthulhuChristmas · 30/05/2021 18:01

I had my second dose of AZ today. In my thirties. Perfectly happy with the level of risk involved.

It's not as if I could take the first dose back! If I'd been told that I had to have an untested mixed vaccine (1 dose AZ followed by 1 Pfizer/Moderna) because some other people didn't want AZ, I wouldn't have had a second dose at all.

Bitzyboo · 30/05/2021 18:02

@purplesequins

Why are people still accepting AZ?

because for most people this is a safe and effective vaccine.
yabu for starting a scaremongering antivaxx thread

Confused

I’m not an anti Vaxx... I probably should’ve said on my post, I’m fully vaccinated (health care worker)
so please don’t throw that rubbish title at me!!

I’m just genuinely surprised that people are still
going ahead with their second dose (which is fantastic)

MaliceOrgan · 30/05/2021 18:03

why would they stop it?

I have my second one at the end of the month and am looking forward to getting it done.

Imagine how expensive and complicated it would be if they did cancel it because people like you can't be arsed to do a bit of reading on it. I assume you would also get angry about wasting money if they did cancel it and start from scratch.

VettiyaIruken · 30/05/2021 18:03

Yes. I had mine earlier this year and my husband had his second last week. He said the place was busy.

It's a small risk. A lot of people are happy to accept that small risk in order to have the benefit of vaccination.

LordEmsworth · 30/05/2021 18:03

Ah sorry @Bitzyboo - speed reading fail.

Useful article explaining why for most people the benefits will outweigh the risks

EasterIssland · 30/05/2021 18:04

“ Perhaps because the mortality rate for those specific clots is much lower than the that for the clots with AZ.”

2nd doses. > 15 cases out of 9m. 0 deaths out of it. What mortality rate are you talking about ?

reprehensibleme · 30/05/2021 18:04

There have been almost 25 million people vaccinated with both doses of AZ. 17 cases of blood clots after 2nd vaccination. Done the risk assessment and perfectly happy to have second dose thanks.

EasterIssland · 30/05/2021 18:05

Also, for the Indian variant they’re saying that not being fully protected could put you at a greater risk , so unless the government starts offering to everyone pfizer / moderna as an alternative people will be more at risk from the virus (once again) than from the vaccine

FuzzyPuffling · 30/05/2021 18:05

So, OP, you think that, despite all the evidence being pro a second dose for maximum and longer lasting virus protection, you're surprised that people who were fine with their first dose, want to have second one?

I hope your health care work doesn't involve explaining treatment risks to people.

There isn’t a huge risk from it despite what people think. Millions have had it with no side effects me being one. The Pfizer and moderna have just as much risk as the AZ

GillianAnderson · 30/05/2021 18:08

Once everybody that wants the vaccine has had both injections what will everybody talk about?

BackforGood · 30/05/2021 18:08

Maybe because we've done the risk assessment and are very happy with that risk ?

Have you actually compared risks for other things like being killed in an RTA, or hit by lightening, or getting stabbed in a park or street, or - as a pp said - childbirth ?
Everything you take - the mildest medicines such as paracetamol - have a leaflet which tells of the risks of taking them.

Many of us are intelligent enough to look at the facts and not be swayed by panic mongering threads like this.

PetuniaPot · 30/05/2021 18:10

The leaflet for ibuprofen is scary.

Disfordarkchocolate · 30/05/2021 18:10

Had my second dose yesterday. I had no concerns at all, the risks are miniscule.

Bitzyboo · 30/05/2021 18:10

@FuzzyPuffling

I am surprised.

It’s probably because I’m not very good at perceiving risk (which I have always put down to being autistic, and the way I process information) and thankfully no, my job doesn’t involve explaining risk. 😁

Rosehip10 · 30/05/2021 18:10

No wonder there were huge queues if people like your DH "got chatting" to the people trying to vaccinate.

murbblurb · 30/05/2021 18:11

Basic maths and risk assessment. The drive to the vaccination centre was much more dangerous than the vaccine.

oneglassandpuzzled · 30/05/2021 18:11

I'm surprised you're surprised, OP. Perhaps those who've had their first or second jabs of AZ are just better at risk assessment.

Sirzy · 30/05/2021 18:12

I’m in my mid 30s, I have happily had two doses of AZ and even with the very minimal risk would still happily do so
