Deaths aren't increasing

Please please jump in and correct me on this if I'm being thick, but as a general rule even though cases are rising, deaths aren't.

Surely this is proof of vaccines working and therefore a good thing?

Hopefully it is. It always takes time for the rise in cases to show in firstly hospitalisations and then deaths so it’s probably a bit too soon to make any judgement just yet

Hospitalisation are up but again, not dramatically.

I know I'm clutching at straws here but I so desperately want to get to a place where it's in circulation but we aren't having to be armchair statisticians every day to work out how safe we are.

Too early to say. There is a lag. Deaths will increase as cases increase. Hopefully. It to previous levels though.

SonnetForSpring · 21/05/2021 17:27

Typo...not to previous levels

Yes, I have everything crossed!

I am three weeks past being double vaccinated but still being very very careful. I'm terrified of slipping back to where we were in December with classes closing, teachers dropping like flies and deaths just spiralling.

Deaths have been less than 10 a day for the last week

In January 1,000+ were dying every day

We’ve come a long way

FourWordsImMuNiTy · 21/05/2021 17:38

Much too early to say unfortunately, but I’m reasonably confident that the vaccines will work as intended.

It’s amazing isn’t it? A well managed combo of slowly easing out of lockdown + massive vaccination drive has really driven the numbers down. Let’s hope they stay there.
AlecTrevelyan006 · 21/05/2021 17:42

Deaths 15-21/01 - 8,565
Deaths 15-21/05 - 42

MegCleary · 21/05/2021 17:46

Be about two weeks time to see if they are going up. God I hope they don’t

MarshaBradyo · 21/05/2021 17:48

They are very low

If they start to go up not sure how much people will bear more restrictions. The grip on us is too much.

Watapalava · 21/05/2021 17:49

Cases aren’t actually rising at all

Cases per day are pretty much flat given the level of opening

What’s rising is the % attributed to the Indian varient

It’s been between 2500-2800 a day for few weeks now and hasn’t risen

Sefton which has Indian varient and was targeted last week has seen significant drop and is on the way down now with no spread to surrounding areas

SonnetForSpring · 21/05/2021 17:50

Wataplava, we only opened on Monday.

SunbathingDragon · 21/05/2021 17:53

ONS say cases might be increasing. It’s too early to really know. After cases start to rise, hospitalisations go up and then after a while more people start dying. Vaccines do work. Let’s hope it’s enough to stop another wave and get back to normality. I think vaccines will get us out of this.

www.statista.com/statistics/1101947/coronavirus-cases-development-uk/

We have had schools back since March

Many workplaces went back in March

Most people having been following the rules for months except on Mumsnet so this latest opening is only making legal what many have been doing for ages

www.statista.com/statistics/1101947/coronavirus-cases-development-uk/

This link show so daily cases have been similar since star April

I’m all for cases remaining steady and agree that it’s particularly good as schools are back but how do you know who’s following rules?
jasjas1973 · 21/05/2021 17:58

Well today they said that R has gone up to 0.9 / 1.1, thats not good but considering the rate of mixing, to be expected i suppose.

I think that'll be used to delay foreign hols, which is annoying considering the numbers they let IN with little restriction, i think the idea is to keep holiday spending in the UK.

Europe seems to be opening all the time, they seem to be going on deaths/hospitalisations rather than infections.

I've been watching cycling in Spain and Italy, plenty of crowds.

LeafBeetle · 21/05/2021 17:58

It's a little early to say I think you're right OP. The vaccine rollout has been fantastic.

Watapalava · 21/05/2021 17:58

As cases rise hospitalisations may not go up at all

Why people still saying this? We have vaccines!

Almost all hospitalisations and deaths were groups 1-9 who have been vaccinated

Even one dose is significant at preventing severe disease

Did you know only 89- yes only 89 people in England under 40 have died during ENTIRE pandemic (who were not in group 1-9).

That’s crazy low!

So cases may go up but honestly who cares? They’re very unlikely to have any affect at all really which is why Boris and witty have always said it’s not cases but nhs pressure

He today said he’s still planning Julys opening

Watapalava · 21/05/2021 18:00

We are also only going by hospitalisations and deaths

It’s the media going on about cases

Gov seem very positive to me

Watapalava · 21/05/2021 18:03

Marsha

I don’t know everybody but I live near Liverpool and work in a very busy part of it with over 100 staff

I ho early don’t know a single person following rules

Not 1 and I’m not exaggerating. People stopped end March

Kids in school have been having sleepovers since March and not a single case that I’ve heard of

I also know no one who works from home so loads mixing going on

Liverpool hospitals haven’t had a single admission this last week so all this anecdotal rule breaking is having no affect at all

Watapalava · 21/05/2021 18:04

honestly

Attictroll · 21/05/2021 18:04

I hope the vaccines hold and deaths don't increase. Although a niggle in my head is we don't know how long vaccine immunity lasts - 7 months or something so surely we should be getting vaccine boosters sorted for those older and vulnerable people who were vaccinated in December

MarshaBradyo · 21/05/2021 18:09

Wat fair enough. I’m not really up to speed on what school people are doing but a party this weekend is postponed as raining, assume too many to be inside. Hopefully will still happen, looking forward to it.

Btw that’s great re no cases at school, same here, only closed when had to last year rather than cases. Tg!

Good to hear about positive June statement today, I really hope so.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 21/05/2021 18:40

If only the UK Covid fatalities figures are trending in that direction in a sustainable prolonged progression without any future spikes. Wait and see if the real impact in the near future of this welcomed trend of lower figures is sustainable or not. Obviously we all hope so. Hope is all we have with the current vaccination race against the mutating super spreading. Fortunately the most vulnerable demographics should be double vaccinated with necessary booster vaccination assurance to follow. The main active younger non medically vulnerable adult and children populations are of course not vaccinated bar a few teens in Bolton etc and possibly those that have been a part of the research trails. The USA is vaccinating older children so I suspect this is necessary globally too. Many of the UK primary schools have parents who are back in workplaces but unvaccinated because of age. The children in crowded Covid enabled indoor environments with minimal superficial Covid risk mitigation management will be a potentially good vector and incubation transfer environment for spreading all virus and germs to allow a direct link to homes. Is there reliable accurate data on vaccination immunity duration as well as efficacy? Are forever mutating global variants systematically sequenced? Amazing work on vaccination so thank you to all those involved as it will make a necessary difference to be a part of the solution and not the problem. Let’s hope for the best and hope it’s not you next directly impacted.
