Shielding list to be virtually doubled

And go from 2.2 million to 3.9 million.

Breaking news...

@Covidcorvid

I fell off a cliff when I broke my back....literally. So it’s not like I have a medical condition which caused me to break my back.

Also why does a broken wrist increase your chances but not a broken leg?

Anyway my score is 42. Not sure if that’s ok or bad?

My score is 38 and I've been on the shielding list since March. So I'm not sure how it works as 38/100 doesn't seem that high to me?
WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 16/02/2021 15:55

@Juo

They will be put on the list purely for vaccine purposes, not actually advised to shield. Shielding is due to end on 22nd Feb and I doubt it will be extended much if at all.
No that's not the case, you need to read what they've said.
AsthmaChecker · 16/02/2021 15:56

Score of 28 here. Clinically vulnerable but unfortunately not vulnerable enough to get a vaccination.

Katie517 · 16/02/2021 15:56

This is a box ticking exercise to get them moved up the vaccine priority list, nothing to panic about and no baring on easing lockdown given cases, hospitalisations and deaths are all plummeting.

LonePenguin · 16/02/2021 15:57

I think it calculates based on BMI rather than weight. It just doesn't let an adult be below 40KG. You can scale up your height to create the same BMI and it should work the same way. I think.

QueenPaw · 16/02/2021 15:58

@JemimaMuddledUp same - my condition isn't even on there yet it's on the original shielding list

Nanuki · 16/02/2021 16:00

I doubt if they will extend shielding past 22 Feb.

They've already advised that shielding should continue until everyone in Groups 1-9 has their vaccine to ensure the vaccine works as it is supposed too. It was on the last round of shielding letters (with date ending 22 Feb). One of the middle paragraphs.

TheCrowening · 16/02/2021 16:01

@Bonsa

I do wonder how many GPs know their patients’ weight? I was last weighed years and years ago!
Mine doesn’t know, and won’t take my word for it!
starfishmummy · 16/02/2021 16:01

"The newly shielding list is supposed to be a letter, but I got my injection invitation by text."

Not newly shielding but DS (shielding) and I (age) got our text invitations and then got the letters abojt a week later!!

TheDrsDocMartens · 16/02/2021 16:01

I can’t get to the bit to start that calculator.

Also the vaccine booking page says I missed my first two appointments 🤷🏻‍♀️

DinoHat · 16/02/2021 16:02

Is this in anticipation of schools going back and numbers rising?

RB68 · 16/02/2021 16:03

I think you will find many people now covered by this were virtually shielding anyway as they knew they had multiple risk factors. I think this confirms their instincts but also helps them in terms of being supported by work to shield wherever possible and work from home be furloughed or be on sick pay etc

Doboopedoo · 16/02/2021 16:04

Anyone know if it will be similarly extended in Scotland?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 16/02/2021 16:04

@Bonsa

It's one of the target records for surgeries. They get a regular payment for all targets hit. Targets include a list of lifestyle habits like weight, and smoking.
Staffy1 · 16/02/2021 16:04

@KaleJuicer, thanks for the explanation.

veryverydrunk · 16/02/2021 16:05

my score is 54 no idea what that means

I have health conditions and hoped that I would be in Group 6. never advised to shield though

WwMILd · 16/02/2021 16:05

Shielding has been extended until 31 March now.

here, right at the bottom

Nanuki · 16/02/2021 16:07

@TheDrsDocMartens click on caluclator in the top right hand corner (took me a while too!)

Okokokbear · 16/02/2021 16:07

I've just read about this in the guardian app. It just really makes me feel angry because on the whole the people were talking about here have worse health outcomes across the board not just with covid. The government have massively contributed to the social inequality which leads to these outcomes. Then they are not being penilaise further.

We need to be asking why we have such a huge at risk group who already have poor health outcomes.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 16/02/2021 16:08

I have the contraceptive injection every 12 weeks and have my blood pressure and weight done then and it is recorded. I am guessing that is why I was texted to have the vaccine. My BMI is down from 58 to 41 and is very difficult to get lower. I did two half marathons with a BMI of 39!

If I am asked to shield I will refuse. I have been at work in school since this started. I have had a high BMI since this started and I have had the first jab of the vaccine so I will just carry on.

pinkearedcow · 16/02/2021 16:08

I'm wondering the same for Wales.
Abraxan · 16/02/2021 16:10

@DinoHat

Is this in anticipation of schools going back and numbers rising?
Possibly though it will mean that some vulnerable staff will drop down the list.

I'm group 6. Initially received shielding information then it was changed and I was group 6. Currently wfh but will return to school from March 8 I am assuming.

I've actually now had Covid during the last term so hopefully I have some immunity remaining. Fingers crossed as I've now developed a second medical condition which was a cause for concern during my time with Covid, where I ended up in hospital.

My surgery is already behind a lot of places including those in other parts of our city. Chances are this will make the wait a bit longer again.

Okokokbear · 16/02/2021 16:10

It just feels like the government are asking people to keep themselves safe rather than reflecting on why the fuck they aren't as safe in the first place.

PleaseStopExplaining · 16/02/2021 16:11

Pretty sure this is going to mean I finally get a shielding letter - long term disabled with a condition that puts me on the vulnerable list, overweight and diagnosed with diabetes within the month.

I’ve been shielding from the word go (it was obvious from the percentsge of disabled people who died that my risk was higher than advised) but being officially told last year would have made things so much easier. Some of the supermarkets wouldn’t give me online slots because I wasn’t told to, others I struggled to get slots.

To say nothing of friends and family who pushed me to get out and do more and stop panicking about my risk.

Thanks, I couldn’t find that on my phone, clearer on ipad!

I got 37 which seems not as bad as I expected
