And go from 2.2 million to 3.9 million.

Breaking news...

Thanks @Puzzledandpissedoff

@fizzyp0p

Great so I still have to go out to work daily group 6 (type 1 diabetes) and be pushed further down the list
This isn’t likely but I understand your worries. It’s “only” around an extra 800,000 who were probably in category 6 anyway.
TwirpingBird · 16/02/2021 15:06

Or they are worried about variants and not saying.

This is my thinking. They are worried about something. The fact this wasn't mentioned at the press conference yesterday and it hasnt been leaked to the press also indicates it was a quick decision. It's odd.

They wanted to give the hype about reaching the 15m target yesterday. Dont think there is anything hiding behind
AmelieTaylor · 16/02/2021 15:15

I've been worried for over a year now, I'm over 50, diabetic & have other underlying issue which cause weight gain. My BMI is over 40 (despite low carb, intermittent fasting etc plus exercise. My body does just not give up the weight)

I have thought I'm at high risk all year, but being marked as shielded wouldn't have made any difference to what I've been doing.

I can't WFH & can't live on SSP, so whatever they call me, I'll have to go to work once schools open.

If I get a letter, it'll scare me a bit though because it means a) they agree with me b) if I could see this- why couldn't they?

SharedLife · 16/02/2021 15:16

True.

@manicinsomniac

What?! Why? I thought shielding would be phased out as the vaccinations took effect, not increased.

This is never going to end, is it.

It isn't because it has suddenly been decided that they should be shielding now when they weren't before, it is so they leapfrog up the list and can get their vaccination sooner than they would have done otherwise.

When they come to the end of the current lists and they start working on the 'everybody else' section, I reckon they will start to prioritise people for their vaccine then, too. Who knows, they might even do the teachers first...

Surely the point of this will be to get people who (we now know from this new modelling) really need the jab protected more quickly, so they don't have to shield, and so that case numbers continue to fall? Makes sense to me and I am far from a fan of the government.
letlooseletloose · 16/02/2021 15:18

@Bonsa

I do wonder how many GPs know their patients’ weight? I was last weighed years and years ago!

I don't think I've ever been weighed by GP, not as far as I can remember anyway

time4anothername · 16/02/2021 15:19

this is the calculator
qcovid.org/

You get a ranking at the end - 100 is the most risk.

I don't know how high you have to score to be included in the list.

AmelieTaylor · 16/02/2021 15:21

@fizzyp0p

No, they're just being included in our group. Over the whole country it's gong to make very little difference to when you get your vaccination.
veryverydrunk · 16/02/2021 15:21

is there any links to find out if you are on this new list? its very confusing. I am supposed to be in Group 6, keep eagerly awaiting the postman but we are down to one delivery per week in my areaConfused

KaleJuicer · 16/02/2021 15:21

It's been worked on for months and months and they have been checking and re-checking the data and the algorithm They couldn't announce it at the press conference as the official communication hadn't gone out to all GPs at that time. Now it's been leaked. Communication to the patients will now go out. The idea is to bump people up the vaccination list if they have a combination of factors that as of themselves wouldn't have lead to a shielding letter (like @AmelieTaylor).

If BMI is unknown it will default to 25 IIRC.

Xenia · 16/02/2021 15:22

If it's to get vaccine sooner I think 34 inches women and 40 inches men - waist might be what gets you the jab so we might have people laying into the cream buns left right and centre to get their waist large enough to get the jab.

Eat for England and save the NHS

SofiaMichelle · 16/02/2021 15:23

I agree. It was all about Boris telling us what a great job he's done.

By the way, whenever something pops up that makes you think, "there's something they're not telling us here..." have a look at the FTSE.

Nothing gets in the way of the money machine and nothing escapes the eyes and ears of the city - you snooze, you lose - so share prices being stable is a good indicator that nothing much is going on behind closed doors.

The FTSE is almost exactly where it was at the close of business yesterday (it was up 2.5% and it's stayed there). If there was anything sinister going on, brokers and bankers would get a sniff of it and shares would fall.

Staffy1 · 16/02/2021 15:26

Ethnicity? How is it only an extra 1.7 million then? There must be more ethnic people than that. It's all very odd.

I agree with you at every single word you've said
GreenWillow · 16/02/2021 15:26

@SharedLife

Is this them moving to "Shield the vulnerable and let the rest of us get on with it" that those that are anti-lockdown promote?
Yes, I think it is.

I anticipate that once the over 50s and vulnerable have been vaccinated, the virus will be allowed to circulate freely in society.

I sincerely hope this doesn’t produce too many variants (always the risk of high transmission rates) but I’m not sure we have a choice anymore.

CaveMum · 16/02/2021 15:27

Please don't rely on letters arriving, as has been said there are postal delays in a lot of areas.

You can see if you are eligible by going on to the NHS Vaccine Booking website (it's the same link you'll be given in the letter). It can't be overemphasised that using the link is NOT queue jumping, the link will only allow you to book if the NHS system has flagged you as being in an eligible group for the vaccine.

www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirus-vaccination/book-coronavirus-vaccination/

You don't need your NHS number, it can still identify you from your name, date of birth and postcode (as registered with your GP). If you are not yet eligible it will not allow you to book an appointment.

KaleJuicer · 16/02/2021 15:27

@veryverydrunk there will be a new flag on your GP file but I don't know if that's taken effect yet, I haven't been in at work. If you call your surgery next week or submit an online query to the GP they should be able to tell you in advance on receiving a letter if your post is slow.

herecomesthsun · 16/02/2021 15:27

It's very unlikely they'll use waist size as this isn't routinely measured at GP or hospital physical health appointments, whereas weight quite often s.

fizzyp0p · 16/02/2021 15:28

@Haenow you're right, I'm just more scared lately for some reason.

Nothing very informative

The newly shielding list is supposed to be a letter, but I got my injection invitation by text.

Good luck for getting yours soon.

RoseAndRose · 16/02/2021 15:30

I'm a bit confused by this, or at least the BBC version, which says they're adding organ recipients, who were on the list anyhow?
