And go from 2.2 million to 3.9 million.

Breaking news...

How do you know that you are? Have you received a letter? We are waiting to see if we receive one for my husband as he’s been called for a vaccination earlier than we expected.

FigDate · 19/02/2021 07:04

DH is now on the shielding list. First a High Risk marker appeared on his medical record. Then he got an email from gov saying he was entitled to priority shopping. Then he booked and had the vaccine. The print outs of his medical record and priority shopping email were enough evidence for him to get vaccine. Then later that day he got the official email telling him to shield.

iwishiwasatcentralperk · 19/02/2021 09:24

I received an email from my health centre

PleaseStopExplaining · 19/02/2021 09:48

@FigDate how did he see his medical records?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/02/2021 12:53

Interesting discussion on Radio 2, about 12.10... a GP explains in some detail how the new list, which sounds incredible, is individualised. So your letter is for you and you only, based on your individual health indicators.

It is built off data from the last year, has been tested to ensure accuracy and is now being rolled out to those who data now suggests are vulnerable - data they didn't have before!

I heard the same discussion. It was a good explanation but goes to show how poorly people have been I formed about the new changes so far.

A lot of women who had GD in pregnancy have been added to the shielding list, but not every woman who has had it needs to shield - it is taken into account alongside other conditions, ethnicity, etc. However I did not know that women with GD are supposed to be screened regularly for the rest of their lives as it predisposes them to developing full blown diabetes. I never had it myself but I have several friends who did and none have have mentioned needing further check ups.

WombatChocolate · 19/02/2021 13:28

Did the programme address the issue of those with GD many years ago being included in error, as there are numerous threads and GP discussions of this....lots of reports of people ringing their GP and after discussion being removed from the list when GD being the only indicator.

CaveMum · 19/02/2021 13:40

They didn’t go that in depth into it, though the GP on the show suggested, to my mind at least, that errors were unlikely as they’ve used a complex algorithm to determine who needs to shield. He said they’ve fed all the data they can get about people who have been seriously ill/died into the system and it has flagged up the most at risk conditions and therefore people with them are being contacted.

I do wonder if the reported cases of pregnant women suffering serious Covid, and in some cases sadly dying, were in women with GD. It’s not something I’ve heard mentioned in reporting.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/02/2021 13:41

Yes, it did. I am afraid I got out of the car as it was still going on.

It stems from a general, fairly global, lack of information on the lifelong increase in the RR of diabetes, as @CaveMum said, and further lack of communciation as the letter went out.

It did a good job explaining how the new list was created. But I suspect left issues about the letters undealt with.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/02/2021 13:43

@CaveMum that's pretty much what I took from it. But as I didn't listen to the end I wasn't sure if I'd missed something!

FigDate · 20/02/2021 19:17

@PleaseStopExplaining
He logged into his System online account which is the online appointment booking system. There’s a section on there where you can view a short version of your medical record.

BongoDx · 24/02/2021 10:01

We have been sheilding since last year with my now 2yearold who has a few health issues and also has downsyndrome, I feel there is not enough said for us sheilding we have no idea where we stand as my son is to young for the vaccine for instance does this mean we’ll forever be sheilding ?? We were moved to catagory 2 for sheilding in September then we formed out support bubble and again we were told to sheild ( we didn’t stop but dad had to go back to work ) because numbers were so high!! So I felt we could have been putting our son at risk going to shops etc and dad being at work as he still could have caught covid and been extremely unwell a cold can hospitalise my boy we nearly lost him with the flu A when he was a baby, I feel so lost and I feel we have been lost and getting no answers either Sad

treeblossomout · 24/02/2021 11:08

@WombatChocolate

Fourth, I think perhaps the way it was expressed by Sally wasn't entirely clear. I take it to mean she was naming her conditions and HER list, not that which appeared in the email. But, because she stated that immediately after mentioning the email, you took it to be info in the email...but she didn't actually say that. I can see why you might have thought she did though.

There's a lot of info out there on GP websites and government websites and sites for GPs saying people will receive letters or emails telling them they are at increased risk, but not specifying why. The info is based on use of QCOVID which his an algorithm for identifying increased risk and it is done centrally and not by GPs. This was so it could be sone speedily and the letters sent out fast so peop,e could shield ASAP once they knew their increased risk.

GP surgeries will see on their records that someone has been identified as higher risk but not why. They can then look at their records (which will take time) and see why and work it out, but if someone just rings to know why, that info won't be available instantly via a receptionist looking at records but will need a medical practitioner to look through the records. They can then add/remove people from the shielding list based on their professional knowledge. But all this takes time.

I can see why it's happened this way. It's for speed and so people can shield faster and reduce the risk as many haven't had vaccine yet. They can also be vaccinated faster. But it's very unsettling to get this letter or email out of the blue, with no explanation and all the implications it has for life, work, family etc. And getting answers if it's surprising as to why it's happened will take several days in most cases, so it's not a great communications example.

My GP has put a thing on their surgery website to people who get this email, saying they realise it's a big surprise to get it and they don't know the details behind it and not to call to ask, as they don't know. It explains how the algorithm has been used . However, unless you actively look at the GP website, you wouldn't see this info and only have your email.

I think my DD has been identified with this new national-level screening as she is now eligible for a vaccine. Problem is the GP disagree with her being eligible and won't let us book.

She is 17 so has to get the Pfizer vaccine via GP, even though it is the national system that has marked her eligible.

So she can't get the vaccine she is entitled to as GP is blocking this as she isn't marked eligible in their records, just the new national screening Sad

Any advice would be appreciated...

EasterIssland · 24/02/2021 11:39

180k people have been a dded to the list for vaccination, those with learning difficulties. thought they already were added

FourTeaFallOut · 24/02/2021 13:04

Any advice would be appreciated...

You could let your local MP know about the discrepancy between the two?

PinkJam · 24/02/2021 16:54

I’d ring 119 and see what help they can give your DD.

BungleandGeorge · 24/02/2021 17:36

Has she had a shielding letter or text you can show the GP?

treeblossomout · 24/02/2021 19:24

@PinkJam

I’d ring 119 and see what help they can give your DD.
Yes, I did that and they couldn't help initially and told me to stop being so nice and polite to the GP practice!

Apparently there is some change to the database happening overnight tonight and some issues will be fixed tomorrow, but they didn't know if that would particularly help us in our case.

treeblossomout · 24/02/2021 19:26

@BungleandGeorge

Has she had a shielding letter or text you can show the GP?
Funnily enough the GP practice initially said my DD's eligibility for a vaccine was a mistake, so I wonder if they removed the shielding flag?

The problem is the new shielding / vaccine list was done by an algorithm taking into account many factors and conditions, so a GP can't do that in their head and can't decide whether it's correct or not.

A letter may well be on the way, but we get post about once a week here, so she'll be back at school before it arrives and of course there are millions of people who never got their letters in the top 4 groups anyway...

BungleandGeorge · 24/02/2021 21:02

Have you put her details into the risk assessment and did she come out as a very high risk? Is it possible that the letter is a mistake? Many someone who has had the letter/text can confirm if it came from their own GP of from NHS England?

PinkJam · 25/02/2021 13:25

@treeblossomout I fully agree with you that the GP should not have removed the flag and overruled the information your DD has had to say that she is eligible to have the vaccine sooner. You need to be saying this to them. I know it’s frustrating, have been their myself many times with different things where you feel like they aren’t listening but persevere Smile
