Shielding list to be virtually doubled

And go from 2.2 million to 3.9 million.

Breaking news...

OP posts:
Jenasaurus · 16/02/2021 16:45

I got this on the calculator

The absolute risk of a COVID-19 associated death is 1 in 3195.

This is in rank 78 out of 100, where 100 is most at risk.

What category would that make me on the list please

PrincessNutNuts · 16/02/2021 16:45

@AmelieTaylor

I've been worried for over a year now, I'm over 50, diabetic & have other underlying issue which cause weight gain. My BMI is over 40 (despite low carb, intermittent fasting etc plus exercise. My body does just not give up the weight)

I have thought I'm at high risk all year, but being marked as shielded wouldn't have made any difference to what I've been doing.

I can't WFH & can't live on SSP, so whatever they call me, I'll have to go to work once schools open.

If I get a letter, it'll scare me a bit though because it means a) they agree with me b) if I could see this- why couldn't they?

That is a very shitty situation to be in. Sad
MercyBooth · 16/02/2021 16:46

That you Anthea?

PrincessNutNuts · 16/02/2021 16:48

@Dogatetheleftovers

If you’re on shielding list but have had first vaccine, do you still have to shield? My dm will ask this, I’m sure.
Yes.

Yes you do. The last shielding letter explicitly said this.
Fortyfifty · 16/02/2021 16:52

@Magnificentmug12

I rekon they don’t really need to shield but the government have had to say this to justify bumping them at the top of the list.

If they need to be at the top all of a sudden then just put them there, don’t need to justify it- just get it done!

Isn't it more likely that having looked at the data of hospitalisation and deaths, a more specific list of who is at risk has emerged.
TheChip · 16/02/2021 16:54

So what number requires shielding? If you get over 50, 60, 70?

Juo · 16/02/2021 16:54

@Dogatetheleftovers

My last letter from Matt Hancock said I should continue to shield after both vaccine doses. This is an extract from my letter Your local NHS will ensure that you can receive the vaccine as safely as possible, as well as any care and support needed. Even if you have had both doses of the vaccine, you should continue to follow this shielding advice until further notice as we continue to assess the impact of vaccination among all groups. The people you live with should continue to follow the public health rules and guidance as long as they are in place, including if you have received the vaccine and if they have received the vaccine.
CurlyReds · 16/02/2021 16:56

Great. So fat people are prioritised but younger people like me who have an autoimmune disorder aren’t.

Rockbird · 16/02/2021 16:57

My next question then is, if you are one of the new shielding, does that make you CEV rather than CV?

MercyBooth · 16/02/2021 16:59

Divide and rule. Divide and rule.

Surely what you meant to say was, "It's great that people that are at higher risk of death or hospitalisation or death are given a higher priority"
NeverDropYourMoonCup · 16/02/2021 16:59

@Blondiney

Yeah, the broken wrist thing is weird as hell. WTF does that increase our risk, has it left a weakness in our immunity somehow?

I also fractured my femur as a kid but they don't seem arsed about broken legs...so odd.

Risk of osteoporosis - wrist, spine, hip fractures are common in that group (it's one of the important red flags for OP - and low levels of vitamin D are associated with that. A very low BMI is also associated with a risk of OP for the same reason.

I scored 61 if some intelligence is used (I have Psoriatic Arthritis, not rheumatoid or SLE) and other autoimmune diseases are taken as being in that tick box.

Maybe I'll get a shielding letter now? It'll be nicer to not find out first hand if catching the original variant gives me a year's immunity or not, as I'll be in school with everybody else otherwise.

Hcolhcsra · 16/02/2021 17:00

They're now sending texts out advising that shielding will be extended until 31st March. Yes, if you're shielding you are CEV and should be offered the vaccine.

Hmmph · 16/02/2021 17:01

The BMJ article says: “People in the top 20% of predicted risk of death accounted for 94% of all deaths from covid-19.” www.bmj.com/content/371/bmj.m3731

NHS Digital article says “The research showed that most people included in the study who died from coronavirus would have had risk assessment results that placed them in approximately the top 2% of the population in England that are at the highest risk.” digital.nhs.uk/coronavirus/risk-assessment/population

So I would say 80+ according to BMJ article and 98+ for NHS digital. But not a very clear number given at this stage- they say they’ll publish more information in the next few days.

CurlyReds · 16/02/2021 17:02

Surely what you meant to say was, "It's great that people that are at higher risk of death or hospitalisation or death are given a higher priority"
No. I mean it’s unfair that people with self inflicted fatness are being prioritised while people such as me with a genuine medical condition that isn’t my fault are not being prioritised.

Devlesko · 16/02/2021 17:02

I scored 85, my BMI is 23.
I'm 54 have type 2 diabetes and white Asian mixed.
This is bad isn't it?

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 16/02/2021 17:04

@CurlyReds

I'm fat, older and I've got an autoimmune disease. I'm therefore higher risk. I presume you're slim. You're therefore lower risk. Fat and thin 86 year olds are higher risk than me. So they get it first. Which is fine by me; if they're not in ITU in the event that I need a bed, I'm benefitting from their priority. If I'm not in ITU in the event that you need a bed, you're benefitting from my priority assuming I ever get vaccinated, they're still trying to reach the 65+ group here and my CEV mate hasn't had his call up yet
Gonegrey31 · 16/02/2021 17:04

I scored 69, BMI is 21. Aged 64 though with heart disease. Not sure what this means ?

I do agree with this, but please don't think everyone with type 2 diabetes has it through lifestyle choices. Some ethnic minorities inherit the condition. I have never been overweight, well within my range for height, I eat healthily and only used to have the ocassional treat. I don't drink alcohol either.
needadvice54321 · 16/02/2021 17:06

Where can I find the calculator that posters are talking about?

CurlyReds · 16/02/2021 17:07

I'm fat, older and I've got an autoimmune disease
Then you should be prioritised based on your autoimmune disease, not on your weight. It seems wrong that your weight is the thing that gets you the vaccine while your medical condition is ignored.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 16/02/2021 17:08

Yep fat people like me! I used to go to the gym at 27 stones. I had bariatric surgery and lost 11.5 stone. I have put half a drone back on. I probably have over a stone of loose skin which I would have to pay around £10,000 to remove as it is cosmetic surgery.

I now run and manage my excess weight and try to make good eating choices. I can't get my weight below 40 and that may be solely what prompted my vaccine referral as I have no other health issues.

Not going to feel guilty though thanks.

You aren't as likely to need ITU and if you do, you're less likely to die even without the vaccine.

So you're saying 'It's not fair that I'm healthier than somebody else'. I'd rather neither of us had Autoimmune conditions, personally. But here we are, both with conditions that aren't our fault. Even if I wasn't fat as well, I'd still be higher risk (and presumably ahead of you in the queue) because of my age and what medications we both take. Shit happens.

My weight will not be what gets me the vaccine. It'll be the Psoriatic Arthritis and biologics/steroids/etc.
