I met one of those "I'm not putting that in my body"

people this week. I didn't think they really existed.

It was at a (virtual) networking thing. Professional people who are in a category where some LAs are vaccinating us and some aren't. Most people in the "room" had already had the vaccination, except this one very vocal woman.

An educated woman, 40ish, in a position of responsibility, working in a sector supporting vulnerable people (hence the access to vaccines). I've met her before and she always seemed very switched on, socially responsible and very capable in her role.

As I said, I thought these people were a bit of an internet myth, but if they did exist, I didn't expect them to be people like this.

Have you met any?

Yes only one so far but she’s a carer with the most plumped up lips I’ve ever seen 🤷‍♀️.

chaosrabbitland · 07/02/2021 10:05

yes i have and so what ,? . if they dont want to have a rushed vaccine then thats upto them really . none to sure i want it either

salmonskinjerky · 07/02/2021 10:15

Is it really that unbelievable to you? If you lived in France 1 in 4 of the people you met would be "one of those".

Toorapid · 07/02/2021 10:17

Maybe it's because most of the people I know feel so vulnerable because of what we do but everyone I know personally is either jumping at the first opportunity or complaining that they haven't yet had the opportunity.

Maybe she has weighed up the risk of covid versus unknown over a time period of the vaccine and thinks that the balance of risk for her is low. If people she works with are vaccinated then they are protecting themselves and should only get a very mild illness apparently so she has a choice based on her own risk appetite

Remmy123 · 07/02/2021 10:47

I don't see the issue. Everyone shouid and have every right to choose what goes in thier body , esp with a new vaccine.

Mindymomo · 07/02/2021 10:57

I only know one person who is 40 and a care home assistant manager. She says we don’t know the full implications yet of the vaccine. I haven’t seen her since she said this (as I usually come across her in the dog park).

southeastdweller · 07/02/2021 11:01

There’s plenty of people out there who think like that.

Why on earth did you think we didn’t exist? Do you seriously think that everyone who’s offered the flu vaccine takes that as well?

RuggeryBuggery · 07/02/2021 11:02

I said it on another thread but my colleague/friend declined the vaccination when we were all offered it though work a few weeks ago because he didn’t trust it. He’s now in hospital with Covid, been there about a week. It’s very sad.

PandemicPalava · 07/02/2021 11:03

Yes, my friend who is a teacher. She never takes any tablets and hates anything like that. As long as most people are vaccinated it won't matter

HappydaysArehere · 07/02/2021 11:04

My hairdresser was telling me just before the last lock down that she had no intention of having the vaccine as she was afraid it would affect her fertility and children were important to her. Recently I saw someone discussing fake news put about by apparently qualified people and that was one example she quoted.
My feeling was that she could be compared with the parents who refuse childhood inoculations in the belief that if other children have them their children will be okay.

Butterymuffin · 07/02/2021 11:05

We don't know the full implications of Covid yet either. But we've seen the worst possibilities.

I've seen a lot of this expressed on social media groups. It is weird how it comes out in people who you'd think it wouldn't.

TryingNotToPanicOverCovid · 07/02/2021 11:05

I know what you mean. My cirlce of friends are reasonably educated and I would be v. surprised to find an anti vaxer. Same as a conspiracy theorist etc.

I'm sure there are some.

TryingNotToPanicOverCovid · 07/02/2021 11:06

Ruggery that's really sad :( .

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 07/02/2021 11:19

What;s sad it the additional burden that your colleague is placing on the NHS. People who decline vaccination when there is no medical reason to do do should be deprioritised from treatment.
Nerdygirl · 07/02/2021 11:22

Wow @EveryDayIsADuvetDay I hope they do the same for everyone who is overweight or likes a drink or a cigarette or dares to do a dangerous sport at the weekend.

This is a very slippery slope, a part of what makes us human is having informed consent over our bodies .

Nerdygirl · 07/02/2021 11:24

Also those with std’s . Let’s deprioritise those too as that will help won’t it?

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 07/02/2021 11:24

Hold the front page : people have different opinions

ForeverInADay · 07/02/2021 11:36

I actually think it's reasonable to be concerned about the vaccines and part of being an intelligent, aware adult. I would be lying if I said I had blindly decided to have a vaccine when I am given the opportunity. However, having researched it pretty thoroughly and balancing that information with the huge impact on everyone around me and society, I will definitely be willingly going for mine. In fact, I'd be one of those willing to go at 4am if they have 24x7 centres as an option!

Mammaaof · 07/02/2021 11:37

I'm one of those people, but I don't really tell anyone as don't want to be judge for my decision x

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/02/2021 11:38

I don't know anyone like this. All my friends and family have either had it or are eagerly looking forward to it.

ChaToilLeam · 07/02/2021 11:39

I’m pretty sure one of my colleagues will decline, he and his family don’t vaccinate generally. I don’t agree with him, I think he’s wrong, but it’s his decision and it’s not an argument I wish to have. He’s not an ignorant man in any way.

Tumbleweed101 · 07/02/2021 11:39

I'm a watch and wait kind of person. I'd rather make a choice based on more evidence as time goes on. As someone likely to be low on the priority list I have that bit more time to weigh things up. We've already had covid, it was mild for my household so I'm not feeling any great rush to have a brand new vaccine.

However, my mum had hers yesterday. Her choices as an older person with COPD are very different from mine as her likelihood of getting very poorly with covid are much higher and she is fed up of shielding. The potential risk with the vaccine is likely lower than with catching covid.

It isn't unusual for people to want to delay or wait before having something very new injected into them. I'm not against vaccines but I am cautious about new treatments in general. Think it comes down to personal risk assessment and how fearful you are of catching covid. My personal assessment is based on how poorly were with the illness and know we have a bit of immunity right now.

justilou1 · 07/02/2021 11:42

My friend’s mum is one of the “The Lizard People Want to Put Microchips in Your Bodies - Don’t Do It!” nutbags... I have blocked her on fb.

LockdownCheeseToastie · 07/02/2021 11:43

I know one person who declined it because they’d rather trust God than modern medicine. Apart from their recent cancer treatment. And I’m sure they’d use an ITU bed if they did get COVID. What can you do.
