I met one of those "I'm not putting that in my body"

people this week. I didn't think they really existed.

It was at a (virtual) networking thing. Professional people who are in a category where some LAs are vaccinating us and some aren't. Most people in the "room" had already had the vaccination, except this one very vocal woman.

An educated woman, 40ish, in a position of responsibility, working in a sector supporting vulnerable people (hence the access to vaccines). I've met her before and she always seemed very switched on, socially responsible and very capable in her role.

As I said, I thought these people were a bit of an internet myth, but if they did exist, I didn't expect them to be people like this.

Have you met any?

“yes i have and so what ,? . if they dont want to have a rushed vaccine then thats upto them really . none to sure i want it either”

Which “rushed” vaccine do you think is on offer? Only Pfizer and AZ have received marketing authorisation in the UK and neither has had the safety testing element “rushed”.

MrsHamlet · 07/02/2021 11:45

Yes. She was and remains utterly horrified that I voluntarily joined a vaccine trial because "who know what they've put inside you".
Either saline or a highly effective vaccine. And my microchip of course.

andshopsandtrees · 07/02/2021 11:46

My mum is one

TheFormidableMrsC · 07/02/2021 11:46

I had a disagreement with a friend about this last night. I had my vaccine on Friday as I am being treated for breast cancer. I was delighted about this. I've had no side effects at all. She insisted it was "untested and unsafe" and wouldn't be having it. Could not back this statement up with anything except "she just knew". Ok then Hmm

Jsnn · 07/02/2021 11:47

Honestly the people who just blindly go along with everything and never question anything that comes from an official source are just as psychotic as the people who believe everything is a conspiracy theory.

I gotta think the rational people understand vaccines are absolutely critical component of public health and essential but these vaccines have been rushed and prior vaccines rushed previously have had widespread side effects discovered later. There is a risk/benefit analysis that needs to be done here. If you're higher risk i think you'd be foolish not to take vaccine but it's crazy to me that a 30 year old thin healthy person who isn't front line would just take the vaccine without a second thought. Not saying they shouldn't take it but they should at least be weighing up the risks/benefits. Of course these people haven't been offered it yet (except some nhs and other staff who aren't front line but have been offered anyway)

C152 · 07/02/2021 11:47

@EveryDayIsADuvetDay - hardly anyone would be 'deserving' of medical treatment if we applied your approach...not the smokers (do we include passive smokers as well?), the drinkers, the irresponsible or simply inexperienced drivers who get into accidents, those who are overweight / underweight, diabetic because of lifestyle choices...I could go on...

Teandsympathy · 07/02/2021 11:49

Maybe other people who don’t want the vaccine are not so vocal because they don’t want to have to deal with ‘one of those people’ who feel they have the right to publicly judge them?

TravellingTilbury · 07/02/2021 11:51

Confused Maybe you don't know many, but surely there are lots of people that carefully consider what they put into their bodies?

It's not rocket science that if someone spends a lot of time thinking about what they ingest (or do to their bodies) and considers the ingredients of most things, then they would also consider what the ingredients of the vaccine are, particularly if they are not prone to taking medicines (or are prone to allergic reactions).

I'm sure people who want to know will do their own homework and make their own decisions. Info is on the gov website for each vaccine.

Thankfully we still live in a country where people can choose what they do put in their bodies.

chaosrabbitland · 07/02/2021 11:56

@Nerdygirl

Wow *@EveryDayIsADuvetDay* I hope they do the same for everyone who is overweight or likes a drink or a cigarette or dares to do a dangerous sport at the weekend.

This is a very slippery slope, a part of what makes us human is having informed consent over our bodies .

exactly , whenever this debate about covid vaccines comes up along comes an idiot to spout that anybody refusing it should be denied treatment it they catch it , its so bloody tiring esp when you can still catch it even if you have had the vaccine , it just lessens the chances and the severity of the symptoms
ivykaty44 · 07/02/2021 11:56

ive got one in my circle...

that was until the sister died after organ failure, which was incredible sad

perhaps the reality of a cover death changed their mind

we don't get to choose whether covid19 gets in our body and harms us, we do get to choose whether we put covid19 in our bodies to reduce the risks

Blessex · 07/02/2021 11:57

Good for her. I am going to have it. I have faith in modern science.

FabbyMagic · 07/02/2021 12:00

@Nerdygirl

Also those with std’s . Let’s deprioritise those too as that will help won’t it?
@Nerdygirl how is that the same?

so vaccines normally take years to be developed and covid ones have taken mere months , if thats not rushed then there must be something wrong with my maths , i expect people desperate to have will convince themselves of anything i guess
Keratinsmooth · 07/02/2021 12:01

Yep, she’s is the most proflific recreational drug taker I’ve met in my nearly 50 years on earth too 😂 think multiple years working in Ibiza, 20+ years cocaine use...

Most of the vaccines use existing vaccine technology. They recruited participants quickly and were well funded. That's where the speed comes from... not skipping layers of safety.

The vaccines are not “rushed”. They have been through the same approvals process as every other vaccine, expedited because of urgency. Any vaccine could be approved as quickly if the same funding, collaboration and political will were thrown at it.

Thingstodotoday · 07/02/2021 12:11

@chaosrabbitland. I specifically said the safety testing hadn’t been rushed. The reasons vaccine trials take years are due manifold and complex, funding, red tape etc. Nothing wrong with your maths. Perhaps just your reading comprehension. I work in the field. I don’t need to “convince myself” of anything.

noodlmcdoodl · 07/02/2021 12:12

I’m one of ‘those’ awful people too. This is mega for me, because it’s new so long term effects aren’t known. To put it in context. I don’t drink, I don’t smoke. I’m super fit and healthy. I think extremely carefully about what goes in my body. For example I suffered from migraines and tension headaches for years, they were ruining my life. I went to my GP hoping for tests to work out why it was happening, so I could resolve it. I was quite clear about this. Instead I was offered all sorts of medication which would only tackle the symptoms not fix the cause. So Beta-Blockers, mild anti- depressants (the old type) and some strong anti-convulsants. I declined because I researched them and the potential risks/ side effects. To someone super healthy and fit it seemed bizarre to take something which could damage my health. If they’d have ‘fixed’ the problem rather than merely acting as a sticking plaster and were a short term thing I’d have been tempted. Anyway I eventually saw a consultant and was offered Botox (injecting something developed as a biological weapon into my body - err no thanks). In the mean time I’d discovered Osteopathy worked for me. So after 6 months of intensive treatment and with regular prescribed stretching and exercising I was pain free.

I’m totally up to date with all my vaccines. As is my DS and DP.

But forgive me if I’m extremely cautious about this going in my body. I would feel a lot more confident and comfortable in a few years time, I think.

AlohaMolly · 07/02/2021 12:12

I am very pro vaxx. DS4 has had all his childhood jabs and any future child will do, too. I had the flu jab when I was pregnant and eligible. I fully support PIL who are over 70 taking their covid vaccine.

I am disappointed that the U.K. government has ballsed up their covid management so badly that we have been left in an all eggs in one basket situation, relying on a vaccine that has been rushed, it doesn’t matter if they tell you it’s passed safety stuff because it has been rushed. The manufacturers couldn’t tell the government of delaying second jabs would effect efficiency because they simply haven’t had enough time to conduct tests.

There are other countries that managed covid better that now have the luxury of time before rolling out vaccines -

I wonder if she has smoked dope bought from a bloke called Dave on a street corner?

Ethelfromnumber73 · 07/02/2021 12:15

@Jsnn the Covid vaccines have not been 'rushed' - I'm sure you know this anyway but this explains how they have been produced quickly:

vk.ovg.ox.ac.uk/vk/covid-19-vaccines

Nerdygirl · 07/02/2021 12:16

@FabbyMagic my point was about the poster who said that those who don’t take the vaccine shouldn’t be prioritised for medical treatment.

Whether you are fat, drink too much smoke or have unprotected sex you are also putting pressure on the nhs so where does it stop? Do you not prioritise those ? With sexual health someone can be putting others in serious harm because of their choices? No, you respect people have choices whether you agree with them or not and treat them fairly

ParadiseinMoscow · 07/02/2021 12:16

It’s not entirely unreasonable to question a vaccine that’s very new. You don’t have to be an Icke following conspiracy theorist to have doubts.

Ethelfromnumber73 · 07/02/2021 12:18

This is also interesting re single dose strategy:
