It's worrying how some can harbour so much hate and still be allowed to hold a position in the Church (and fuel division through Twitter)

I can't see a huge amount wrong with what he said.

Biscoffaddict · 04/02/2021 13:31

I can’t see what he’s said wrong either. I’d argue it’s what a lot of people are thinking.

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 04/02/2021 13:34

I think it will be misunderstood as a criticism of Sir Tom rather than his following.

trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 13:34

Don't you think it's discriminatory?

OP posts:
Comefromaway · 04/02/2021 13:34

I mean I'm not religious so I would not be offering prayers for Captain Tom's kind and generous soul but I can see it's a more appropriate response than this display of what the writer terms cultish behaviour.

AgnesNaismith · 04/02/2021 13:34

🤷‍♀️

Toorapid · 04/02/2021 13:35

"Harbour so much hate"? What are you talking about?

He was foolish to say it, in his position, he should have known there'd be an adverse reaction, but what he said was neither wrong nor hateful.

Comefromaway · 04/02/2021 13:35

@trulydelicious

Don't you think it's discriminatory?
Nope.

An accurate description, yes.

unmarkedbythat · 04/02/2021 13:35

I don't see the issue with what he said.

RosesAndLemonade · 04/02/2021 13:36

Ok then!

trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 13:36

The cult of Captain Tom is a cult of White British Nationalism

I think someone who tweeted this should be stripped of their position of Church leadership

Very dangerous and offensive message

Discrimination against who? I don’t think there’s much wrong with what he said either.

Lordamighty · 04/02/2021 13:38

I think it’s a vile comment to make.

Motorina · 04/02/2021 13:39

He is reported as saying this:

"The cult of Captain Tom is a cult of White British Nationalism. I will offer prayers for the repose of his kind and generous soul, but I will not be joining the 'National Clap'."

Now, I think the national clap was daft. But I feel about it like any other national gesture: if it's meaningful to me I participate; if it isn't I don't but allow those who wish to do so to do so without criticism.

So I think this was a particularly graceless gesture from the priest in question. And I think the "cult of white nationalism" comment was inaccurate and inappropriate.

Pretty accruate I'd say.

^This.

It doesn't insult Captain Sir Tom.

It insults any of us who clapped like sheep for him yesterday. (There was no clapping I could hear in my area.)

TheFairyCaravan · 04/02/2021 13:43

We’re going to need a Captain Tom topic soon.

trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 13:44

@Comefromaway

Would people like you feel the same if it was a white priest saying this about a prominent figure with a different racial background?

I don't think so

There would be uproar and statue toppling galore

Shameful

OP posts:
Notnownotneverever · 04/02/2021 13:47

Don’t see what is wrong with what he said at all. Some people don’t like being challenged. They just like clapping and feeling good about it.

reformedcharacters · 04/02/2021 13:48

I’m baffled how showing appreciation for somebody who raised an astronomical amount of funds for the NHS could possibly be viewed as ‘white British Nationalism’, was it only white peoples who were grateful?

Motorina · 04/02/2021 13:50

I think there's also a timing issue here. Had these comments been made a few years down the line, as part of a broader discussion of the very real racial inequalities in the UK, then fair does. I'd disagree with the comment, but wouldn't think it inappropriate to express. But the guy isn't even buried yet. Tasteless.

wellthatsunusual · 04/02/2021 13:52

I don't think what he said was so awful either. Captain Tom Moore was a man who a lot of people felt fondness and/or respect for. But a quick look at my social media also shows me that his image is also being used by people with rather extreme views. That's not to disrespect him or his family, but sadly there are those who will use things for their own aims.

trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 13:54

@wellthatsunusual

Which aims is he being used for?

aliloandabanana · 04/02/2021 13:54

How is it "white British nationalism"?

trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 13:56

@aliloandabanana

How is it "white British nationalism

And why should a priest feel it's ok for him to comment on this?
