Captain Sir Tom Moore: Cleric's apology for tweet condemning nationwide clap 'does not undo hurt'

news.sky.com/story/captain-sir-tom-moore-apology-for-tweet-condemning-clap-for-captain-tom-does-not-undo-hurt-12208212

It's worrying how some can harbour so much hate and still be allowed to hold a position in the Church (and fuel division through Twitter)

I don't think standing clapping at your door for a minute or two really showed that much respect for Captain Sir Tom.

However I also don't think being harsh on social media about those who chose to do so was a great idea either.

But he doesn't deserve racist abuse for expressing his opinion. That's just vile.

Glenchase · 04/02/2021 14:39

No one has attached Cap Tom or his supporters
The cleric in question did. He said that supporters of Captain Sir Tom were white nationalists.

Frodont · 04/02/2021 14:39

Captain Tom is a figurehead for some, a cypher really. It's fine if people have their own take on the behaviour surrounding him.

Certainly it's the most Brexity of my FB feed who have posted all the sickly poems and pictures, so I can't really disagree with him.

JaimeLeeCurtains · 04/02/2021 14:41

@trulydelicious

Well, apparently this 'clergyman' has form for political activism in social media and the Bishop of London have now launched a probe
Oh my god. Someone actually alerted the Church Elders!

Tbh I think that everyone is entitled to express their opinion, preferably without a witch-burning.

trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 14:41

@reformedcharacters

I don't think this thread should be deleted. Why? So that attitudes like this priest's remain unchallenged?

OP posts:
mootymoo · 04/02/2021 14:41

Appalling in my opinion, it everything has a race angle!

Glenchase · 04/02/2021 14:42

He can have an opinion
As has been pointed out - no he can’t, not if his opinion is racist and discriminatory.

He was wrong to conclude it was. It was pointed out. He apologized. It's been deleted.
The problem is though, he’s now been outed as a racist. Apologising and deleting doesn’t make him any less of a racist. And I feel it’s inappropriate to have a racist in his position in the church.

Hoppinggreen · 04/02/2021 14:42

If capt Tom wasn't white and wasn't former forces there wouldn't have been this huge outpouring of grief

The Captain is mourned for all the good actions he did and the example he set. You are full of prejudice I'm afraid
And you are full of breathtaking naivity if you think he would have been treated the same if he wasn’t white.
I applaud what he did ( although I’m certainly not mourning him, I leave that to people who actually knew him) but I recognise that for a number of reasons, his background being one of them, he was in a position to do what he did. I acknowledge he didn’t have to do anything and it’s a credit to him her did but SOME people certainly wouldn’t have been out clapping or putting him on their FB wall if he hadn’t been a white man

JaimeLeeCurtains · 04/02/2021 14:43

Will no-one rid me of this of this turbulent priest?

Brush up on your lit, OP. That one was canonised.

trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 14:43

He is the one abusing those who are white. Have you read the article?

trulydelicious I get your point but if the comments from a racist white priest were being supported it would be gone.

Moondust001 · 04/02/2021 14:45

@trulydelicious

The cult of Captain Tom is a cult of White British Nationalism

I think someone who tweeted this should be stripped of their position of Church leadership

Very dangerous and offensive message

Really - there were similar things posted (some actually were bordering on offensive) yesterday on MumsNet. I see nothing wrong with what he said, and I agree with him. Tom Moore was a good man. Lots of people are good people but we don't make them into heroes and act as though they are so much better than everyone else. To be fair, Tom Moore didn't do that himself either. But he was made into a figurehead by others for their own purposes. Whether you agree with those purposes or not, he was used. And the "national clap" was yet another example of this. So it's my opinion that this vicar was right. But whatever the opinion you hold, he had a right to express his opinion and shutting him down was wrong. The founder of the church was rather well known for blunt and unpopular statements. We could do with more of it these days. Christianity is not about, and should not be about, rose tinted spectacles and fluffy rabbits.
Glenchase · 04/02/2021 14:45

Tbh I think that everyone is entitled to express their opinion
I can think of a number of opinions that would result in me being sued or fired, or at least given a stern talking to by the police and having a hate crime recorded against me. No, people are not entitled to express their opinion when it conflicts with established laws about discrimination.

Jsnn · 04/02/2021 14:45

Ridiculous opportunistic statement. History of racist remarks not really appropriate given his position, should step down but likely won't. Will be interesting to see if he is forced to. Almost certainly would if races were reversed.

trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 14:46

I don't' think that what this priest said is factual, no

white, elderly, respectable, fought for his country

Is there anything inherently wrong in your view with someone who fits this criteria?
Nobody is saying there is anything wrong with being those things, but it does mean he is the dream person for certain groups to use to push their own agenda, if you can’t see that then you are incredibly naive,

CayrolBaaaskin · 04/02/2021 14:47

He can have an opinion of course but its right that his opinion was removed from twitter because it was racist and objectionable. I don't think we need to go on about it but the church should deal with him appropriately as such conduct is not acceptable in a priest.

trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 14:47

@Jsnn

He should be, definitely. He shouldn't be in a position of spiritual leadership

Yes. Direct quote from article - "Nor do Jarel's actions justify the racist abuse he is now receiving."

JaimeLeeCurtains · 04/02/2021 14:48

... which would be scandalous as most 'non crime hate incidents' recorded by the police are an affront to democracy.

He can't expect people to remain silent if he is the one who decided to jump on the abuse wagon first.

As I said before, tolerance is a two-way street

I'd not heard of the Sikh man, which sort of demonstrates the point.

I had heard of a man of on my local news who did 50 half marathons running round his coffee table whilst fasting for Ramadan but that didn't make the national news either.
