Captain Sir Tom Moore: Cleric's apology for tweet condemning nationwide clap 'does not undo hurt'

It's worrying how some can harbour so much hate and still be allowed to hold a position in the Church (and fuel division through Twitter)

How is it "white British nationalism"?

Also hoping for an explanation.

Glenchase · 04/02/2021 13:58

Captain Sir Tom was an inspiring figure who raised funds for the NHS and raised spirits at a time when people were struggling. His skin colour is not relevant to that at all. The fact that this cleric has even brought race into the equation means that HE is the racist. Because he is unable to look past Captain Sir Tom’s skin colour to see that he was a brave gentleman and a figure of hope to EVERYONE.
@wellthatsunusual

sadly there are those who will use things for their own aims

Which aims is he being used for?
I can only speak for what I have seen on social media. I have seen his image used alongside 'when our country was great, not like now when it is overrun by immigrants' crap. Same as I see every Remembrance Day.

That is not the fault of the individual, just as it's not the fault of the Royal British Legion when these people hijack acts of remembrance. But it's naïve to think that it doesn't exist.

@TheFairyCaravan

We’re going to need a Captain Tom topic soon.

Please explain why what he said was at all dangerous. You’re being hyperbolic and quite silly.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 04/02/2021 14:02

@Motorina

I think there's also a timing issue here. Had these comments been made a few years down the line, as part of a broader discussion of the very real racial inequalities in the UK, then fair does. I'd disagree with the comment, but wouldn't think it inappropriate to express. But the guy isn't even buried yet. Tasteless.
Agree with this.
trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 14:09

Well, apparently this 'clergyman' has form for political activism in social media and the Bishop of London have now launched a probe

I agree with you, OP. Captain Tom's walk around his garden did more than raise money for the NHS. He also raised the nation's spirits, in one of the most difficult times in living memory. He was almost the great-grandfather of the nation during 2020, and his courage and spirit bought hope to millions. Clapping for him was not about white nationalism, but about bringing people together in appreciation of what he achieved.

It was divisive and unkind of Reverend Robinson-Brown to say what he did, and I do question the motives of somebody who looks for racism in the most innocent of actions. However, he has apologised for what he said and deleted his tweet, so I think we should take this as ill-judged rather than deliberately malicious, and move on.

Glenchase · 04/02/2021 14:10

How is it "white British nationalism"?
It’s not. It could reasonably be called “British nationalism”. But why does anyone need to bring race into it? Only a racist would look at Captain Sir Tom and see his skin colour.

Topseyt · 04/02/2021 14:11

I think he would have been better advised to keep quiet.

@AnneLovesGilbert

Please explain why what he said was at all dangerous

He's using a position of perceived moral power to foster racial hate and division. Very dangerous

OP posts:

@Glenchase

Only a racist would look at Captain Sir Tom and see his skin colour

Exactly. And tolerance is a two-way street

Why do some think this is remotely acceptable?

OP posts:
trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 14:16

His actions were remarkable and he deserves all the clapping and more.

Unfortunately I think that certain Right wing racist groups/individuals are using the images etc of Captain Tom in a jingoistic remember when Britain was great sort of way. I doubt he would have wanted that to be his legacy but some groups are pushing that agenda
What this priest said was probably ill advised but I don’t see any inaccuracies there

Radio4Rocks · 04/02/2021 14:18

I agree with him. There was no criticism of Captain Tom implied just of a certain type of admirer, They are to be found all over facebook. Racist to the core. Surely you have seen that?

Theunamedcat · 04/02/2021 14:19

It has nothing to do with colour and everything to do with respect he could have been a gurka and I would still have gone out and clapped and I'm not someone who claps often he polarised a nation he was a man in the right place at the right time he boosted spirits at a time when we needed it why didn't this religious man do the same? He didn't he pushed hate and intolerance to the front again

MonkeyNotOrgangrinder · 04/02/2021 14:19

I don't disagree with him. Hopefully he will manage to keep his job and the church leadership won't bow to the pressure they'll now be under to get rid of him. I'm not religious in any way but people should be able to express an opinion. If you disagree, say so politely instead of vilifying someone

WagnerTheWehrWolf · 04/02/2021 14:21

Form for political activism?

Like that Jesus bloke?

Bloody awful! Let the probing commence.

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 04/02/2021 14:22

Still can’t see how tweeting that is ‘dangerous’

Glenchase · 04/02/2021 14:22

people should be able to express an opinion
Not if their opinion is discriminatory and racist. That’s illegal.

trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 14:22

@Radio4Rocks

There was no criticism of Captain Tom implied just of a certain type of admirer

The priest could have been more explicit and worded it in a different way.

But he didn't and what he said lets everyone see his true intentions unfortunately

Apparently he has used his platform within the Church for political activism in the past

So just because some might have used his image for their agenda this man has judged everybody the same and so are you?
WagnerTheWehrWolf · 04/02/2021 14:22

The Captain Tom delirium is so out of control. Millions of people need a sedative. Or maybe a nice walk around their back garden to calm them down.

Hoppinggreen · 04/02/2021 14:24

Certain Right wing groups/individuals
Some groups
Pretty sure that’s not me judging everyone the same.
